2012 is a year I'd rather forget, but 2013 is looking like one to remember. Really looking forward to it! We'll see if my Thomas fandom lasts another year as it's slowing starting it's decline.

It's a bit late in coming, but Happy New Year to all as well. I'm not usually one for New Year's resolutions, but starting with this post I'm going to start visiting this board and the TV, Movies, etc. board more often. I've mostly ignored them during my time as a member here, but I think it's time I tried to get to know members here better and perhaps let them get to know me better too. Whaddya say?

Super worried about this coming weekend, even though it's only Monday.
My exam results are meant to be released then, and I'm particularly dreading what I got for maths. It was by far the worst of my exams and the fact that my parents spent hundreds of dollars on tutoring makes it hurt A LOT. Even worse is the fact that my friend is constantly on my case about my poor maths ability and throughout the year he's been giving me crap about my poor test results.
So not only was I desperate to please my parents, but I was also desperate to prove my friend wrong and it looks like neither of these will happen and it's killing me inside.

Don't be too harsh on yourself. I always had trouble with math and it wasn't realized until I pleaded with my university to test me. There's actually a math disability and if you get the testing done it may help explain your troubles. For example, my personal test revealed that I can't do complex math past an 8 year old level. Just relax, and if the exam results aren't positive, ask for a disability test.

Rolling Thunder,
Please don't bring your hopes down. I understand the possible stress and anxiety levels that are ,undoubtably, causing you to have a breakdown, and I sincerely feel for you here. I had a friend who was in your position, however he pulled through this in two ways: one as Ajani rightly mentioned his problem in mathematics were worsening, yet he did not know why until he had a chance to undergo a test. It did come back as being a small disability which he larned to live and deal with.
Another way was simply through not giving up on anything. I see if people are eager to let themselves feel defeated, it will, I am sorry to say, remain that way. It does feel extremely downheartening to me to say that, but wherever there is hidden strength, there is always a will and a way.
Look up to and keep reminding yourself, mistakes can be learned from, if you never make a mistake you will never learn.
Remain positive RT, I am with you all the way!!!!!!

One great thing I took from Psychology was the theory that we each have different intelligences - for example, a person can excel at English, Social Studies and similar subjects, yet would be dire at Mathematics and Science. Personally, I'm living proof of this - Maths and Science are two subjects I could never get my head around, yet for English, History, Modern Studies and Geography, I was seen to do very well. If you don't get it - don't worry about it. Take solace in the ones you did do well in.

I whole heartedly agree, although I didn't take a course to come to that conclusion, it's just something I've noticed within myself and others throughout my life. There's no doubt about it, why it's a theory I have no idea, for the proof seems unquestionable. If you give me a tax form my brain will melt, they render me thicker than a brick at times, yet in many other ways I seem to be over and above many in certain intelligences. I think it's all a case of what emphasis your mind is geared towards. I'm also a bit of a mathmatical dumbo. I'd say I'm unballanced, but that doesn't matter as the positive areas can shine. Another example: When I was a soldier you would sometimes get a new officer in charge of you, literally just came out of Sandhurst at 19 or whatever. Clearely they were in many ways intelligent to be given a place, but I kid you not, some of them came across so stupid in the 'common sense' department you wouldn't believe it. Unballanced again. We are all like it, some are ballanced, others are geared to a perticular area, so rather than slate each other it is an opportunity for people to help each others lack. I'm not suggesting anyone is slating anyone, just giving my 2p on the quote.

I missed a crucial period during math skills development, the times tables due to illness around grade 5. I was never good at math after that, but excelled at trigonometry and aced statistics in college and all other subjects. I was never good at algerbra either. It's strange how I was able to relate to an entire new set of symbols and their functions for stats & trig as aooposed to algerbraic functions.

A quote from Albert Einstein. "Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid." I suffer from dyscalculia and no one noticed during my secondary school years. I still struggle with my 3 times table, let alone anything else mathematical. But I know I have strengths not just academically, which is why I was able to attend University. Everyone is good at something, it's just taking the time to work out what that thing is. Good luck, and please keep your chin up.

What an awesome quote! That's so true, most people in the past seem to spent most of their efforts telling this fish he's rubbish because I can't climb trees. I'll remember that one.

I was the only one with Dyscalculia I know of - nobody at school spotted I was dsycaluleic, unfortunately, and it took the Aero department at Lboro three terms to realize what I was doing with my numbers. I ended up doing English instead, and haven't looked back since. Always play to your strengths, it all comes good in the end.

My substitute teacher went on today about how everyone has something to contribute to society, and we can't let others, especially those teaching us tell us different. His own principal told him he shouldn't bother going to University, and he proved him wrong, walking back into the school seven years later with three different degrees.
Everyone struggles at something. You just have to push hard to get around it, and you will get rewarded in some form or another.

One other thing to note, is that there genuinely are fish out there that actually can climb trees; so who knows? Perhaps any little "faults" you do have could be improved upon or even overcome; don't let them hold you back - embrace them and work with them.
Oh, and also Stephen Hawking can't do sudoku; but who ever notices that?

Thanks so much for the support guys! I was a bit worried that this would come off as too much of a "poor me" moment, but you guys were really helpful and supportive. Really proves that this forum is both informative and friendly.
I'll just have to wait and see what happens this weekend.
EDIT: Feel like I'm somewhere else right now. Honestly, I can't feel anything. I actually passed. Not only did I pass, but I also scored a Merit on one of the papers. Thanks so much for the support guys!
Sounds like a good excuse to put this here:
