Apparently early locomotives often lacked cabs due the chief fuel being coke and not coal - apparently coke gas is more inclined to give you carbon monoxide poisioning. I thought it was a case of they either couldn't be bothered, hadn't thought of it or cost cutting.

Just wanted to say that I thought it was kind of funny that today was the first time in a little while that I signed in, and it's also the first day of this new proboards version 5. I was pretty thrown off by it. It's a little buggy at the moment, but I hope it's the beginning of a wonderful thing!

So I have this poster of Steam Locomotives, with locomotives from the early American years, the 4-4-0s, a few from the DB (German Railways) and several from the UK ( including LMS, SR, and BR).
I was sitting in my room and was looking at it and I asked my girlfriend what engine she liked best. She looked at it for a while and said, "I don't know, they all look the same to me." I was shocked and said, "No they're not actually... The Battle of Britain class has a distinct streamlined shape and the Q1 has a boxy shape..." Then I stopped because, by the look on her face, she had no idea what a Battle of Britain class was nor a Q1. Oh well...

Today, when I was in town, this person I knew from school was also in town. It was one of the people who used to antagonise me once or twice a week. The second this person saw me, they shouted their old school abuse, as if time never moved on.
I paid no attention as I walked past, but I shook my head in disgust. Twelve years pass and this person STILL hasn't grown out of that? They were in the same year as me, which means that they're only a couple of years away from 30. Nearly 30, and they still behave like a spoiled brat.
I just said to myself: "That is f**king pathetic."

That is the point where you go onto Google images, and show her some different engines. Perhaps the train that was featured in Harry Potter. (If she is a PotterHead) If that fails then leave it be.

I have a quick query regarding some of the tweaks here on SiF.
I'm just curious as to whether, if I add a link to a social networking site, such as Facebook, on my profile for all to see here, will Facebook announce that I have made any sort of link to SiF?
Personally, I prefer to keep SiF somewhat discreet, and not specifically detailed or referenced to in places where other social circles can see.

No, nothing that you do on SiF will appear on Facebook.

Well, my family and I are moving to a new place tomorrow, and I may not have internet access for a couple of weeks, so I'm going to be offline for a while. See you guys later. EDIT: Cable guy came early, so I'm back now.

Just a curious question:
Does this thread have a purpose with the implementation of the shoutbox?

I think if you want to chat with people, and have what you've got to say have lasting power, that this is the thread for you.
The shout box is to just see who's around basically, and to engage them.

Well, it's been a long time coming, but my laptop is finally gubbed.
It refused to start up all Saturday and the computer store has just called back to say the motherboard has gone. Given all I've been through with this one, including a big virus scare last year, I'm actually quite surprised it's lasted this long before giving out.
The good news is the hard drive itself is alright, so I'm thankfully going to get copies of all my personal files back; however, given that repairs will cost nearly as much as a new laptop anyway, it looks like it's time to start shopping around again. Bleugh.
In the meantime, I'll have to use the parents' laptop to update on here. Not that I do that enough these days anyway, but hey, beats staring at the blinking lights on the Wi-Fi box all day.

I've heard this before, and I'm sure many of you are tired of hearing it, but: I thought it was clever, myself!

I was browsing a collection of railway related books I have at home, picked one up named "A Guide to the Steam Railways of Great Britain". I took a quick look in it and was about to put it back when I noticed something, on the cover, under the title it says: Edited by the Reverend W. Awdry and Chris Cook
I've must have seen this books several times before, but this is the first time I took notice of the 'Awdry' name there! This might sound strange but it made my day just a little bit better, going to look through the rest of the books later to see if I can find any more gems in there.

So... I noticed a while back, with the switch to the new proboards format, that everyone's profile had been assigned a number in the URL of their profile pages. I don't know if that's always been there, but I decided to look at my profile to see what number I was. I don't know if it's the same for everyone, but my number is... 666. Moving on...
