Pardon the necrobump, but I would like to recommend two Anime: Puella Magi Madoka Magica, and Wolf's Rain. "You were my best friend." Puella Magi Madoka Magica takes the usual magical girl nonsense and turns it on it's head, resulting in one of the greatest and most gripping tales of love and friendship in the face of absolutely HORRIFIC suffering and despair I have ever seen. Let me put it this way; I cried myself to sleep after watching the last episode, and I rarely, if EVER, cry; nothing wrong with it, just isn't something I do... "The Earth is dying." Wolf's Rain is the adventure of a pack of wolves who appear as humans to others in order to disguise their true forms and their quest to find paradise. The last two episodes will leave anyone with a soul sobbing, so have copious tissues on hand. While both works are tragic tales, they are also ones that will make you think. How valuable is my life, and the lives of others? And friendships, what of those? Tough questions, but I feel that the both of these shows answer them well and may help those who watch them get a better understanding of themselves and place a higher value on the things that matter most.

I hope no one minds me bumping this. Speaking of magic girls Sailor Moon is getting a reboot which I'm very excited for. www.themarysue.com/new-sailor-moon-cast/. Digging the Manga look. I'm not a manga purist by any stretch of the imagination unless we're talking Full Metal Alchemist then its Manga or go home. But I like the idea of a faithful adaption to the source material which has a more cohesive storyline and is a tad more serious. Manga Sailor Venus is also superior to Anime Sailor Venus.

Seeing as how the mangaka has gone on record as saying she was disappointed by the changes her editors forced on her, I honestly hope she has a more direct hand in the anime this time around. Seeing what a reboot did for FMA (good but deeply flawed with a crap ending into a much more refined work that borders on excellent), I hope that long-time fans will get what they deserve.

The old Sailor Moon anime has alot of charm but I side with Takeuchi about the changes particularly with Sailor Stars which makes the last series a cluster you know what. I'm looking forward to the reboot. With FMA the first anime got ahead of the manga and Arakawa wanted them to do their own thing. I recognize alot of fans enjoy the darker and more character focused story of the first anime. However FMA:B has better character development and the superior story thanks to the the quality of the source material. Its unfortunate FMA:B still lets the source material down by omitting a chunk of Arakawa's world building and mythos layering. I recognize changes have to be made and things have to be omitted sometimes though because they just don't translate well on screen.

Truth be told, while FMA: Brotherhood is all but objectively better, I was still left feeling a bit cheated, as the last arc was saved solely by excellent characters and a delightful epilogue. I suspect the blame for the stupid moments that harm it falls on the anime, although I will freely confess I have never read the manga so I cannot speak for certain.

I've never been a big fan of anime in the past. However, seeing as there's no new Thomas, MLP: FiM or Red Dwarf for a while, I've started watching 'Sailor Moon' (the English Dub) and, so far, I'm enjoying it! Good animation, great theme song and Linda Ballantyne (who voiced Percy in TATMR) is in the later episodes. Yeah, I think it's pretty good.

Linda Ballantyne is cool although in the dub I like Terri Hawk the best as Sailor Moon. I find the early DiC episodes still have alot of charm after all these years and while campy subbed its still my favorite anime/ manga series of all. I'm very excited for the new anime.
Recently I've watch Sword Art Online which is pretty meh with a pretty lame disconnected storyline which is disappointing because premise is a good one. The second half with the weird love triangle was really tough to get though. I've started reading the light novels though which are slightly better. They are kinda funny to read because they read like an intermediate series like my Animorph books then along comes a certain bonus chapter among other things.
An anime I've seen lately and really liked though was Guilty Crown which is a little campy and cliche but I really like the protagonist Shu who is just about the most unlikable protagonist. The series' strength lies in the philosophy more than anything else. It reminds me vaguely of Casshern Sins in that regard. And wow, this anime's soundtrack is amazing. Bios man...

I've just seen the trailer for the upcoming new Sailor Moon anime. I must say, I'm very impressed with the new modern anime style already.

Here it is with Subtitles
The art style is very much in the Manga's style so its pretty clear it'll follow the Manga storyline. I'm very exciting. 9am EST on July 5th on Crunchyroll.

Lately I've been watching Death note and I must say that I'm greatly enjoying it although my favorite anime series would still be the good ol' Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood.

I've been spending the past few days marathoning Infinite Ryvius (right after finishing the overall mediocre Tokyo Magnitude). It's an obscure series compared to other productions by Sunrise. Other than one of the main characters being a spectacularly irritating Jerk Sue poster boy (he's gotten so annoying I've taken to mute him out every time he shows up and my viewing experience has improved tenfold somehow), it's been a very enjoyable watch so far. Allow me to gush over the series (and bash on Yuki) in the spoiler tags It's a story set in the future about, (bear with me, I'm bad at explaining things) a bunch of high schoolers trapped inside a wandering spaceship after all the adults present in the ship are killed. They are forced to live together for an indefinite amount of time as they wait/look for rescue. Needless to say, trouble ensues. I recommend the series to those who like: Spoiler Spoiler - Loads and loads of characters: the Ryvius has a stated total of 487 students on board. Of them, 30-so of them are named, and 20-so of them get character development. The main characters include a Shinji Ikari-esque guy (but saner with a marginally happier childhood) named Kouji who is training to become an astronaut, his younger brother Yuki (the aforementioned Jerk Sue), their childhood friend Aoi who harbors feelings for both of them, Kouji's best friend Ikumi who dislikes violence and has a past he prefers not to talk about, Aoi's friend Kozue who is in love with Ikumi and is in training alongside Aoi to become a flight attendant, and Faina, a religious girl who Kouji is attracted to and vice versa. Major supporting characters include the elite group of students called the Zwei, a gang led by Airs Blue, a mysterious girl in a metallic outfit who talks like Rei Ayanami and the minor characters are the rest of the students onboard the ship. Look out for a girl in a dinosaur costume and a guy wearing nothing but a pillowcase. Almost all of them are likable in one way or another and I ended up rooting for both the Zweis and Airs Blue when they inevitably argue.
- Subplots: as a consequent of having a large cast there are lots and lots of subplots going on at the same time. The largest plots are the students struggling to survive together inside the spaceship, Kouji trying to get along with his Jerk Sue brother (and failing every time), Kouji coming to terms with his flaws, a Aoi/Kouji/Faina love triangle, and a government conspiracy of some kind happening back at Earth. A lot of characters get subplots to their own, even the background characters, and the ones who don't will end up playing a part in the story as a whole.
- Character development: Seriously, some of the characters' personalities at the start of the series barely resemble how they end up being at the end of it, and not always for the better. Nearly the entire cast (except for Yuki, seriously that's how much of a Sue he is) undergo some development one way or another, whether positive or negative.
- Flawed characters: See above. Usually a positive character development has them admitting and getting over their flaws while a negative one has them succumbing to them instead. Exempt from this is Yuki, whose flaws are barely there, barely acknowledged and if they are, nearly the whole cast worships him nonetheless and the ones who disagree with him are wrong. Always.
- (Character-driven) Drama: Tons of it. Though I personally like the drama (only second to the characters imo), some commented that it felt forced at some aspects. Then again, this series does star children and high schoolers, so angst is kind of inevitable.
- Mood whiplash: Inevitable when you've got dramatic, romantic and comedic plots going on at the same time.
- Techno Babble: Seriously, if you can't stand hearing character talk about technical stuff that the writers clearly made up you're better off either not watching the scenes at all or just muting it off, it doesn't add much to the series as a whole.
- 90s art style: The series was made in the late 90s and it shows. The animation isn't very stellar either. The art style is decent enough for me at least.
- Good pacing: The pacing is extremely good, as I said there are a lot of characters, a lot of subplots, a lot of chaos but the series never seems to go too fast or feel like a drag. Every episode brings a lot of plot and character development and there are barely any filler episodes. Of course the consequent of this is that the series is very tense throughout all 26 episodes. Anyway, it's Lord of the Flies IN SPACE! What more can you ask?

Sorry for double-posting but nobody's posted in this thread in a while.
I'm on episode 21 (out of 25) of Log Horizon right now, and I'm just wondering if anyone could tell me if Sword Art Online is worth watching or not. Most reviews I've encountered are either mixed to severely negative. People often say that Log Horizon at first glance looks like a rip-off of Sword Art Online but is actually almost the polar opposite of it -- Log Horizon seemed to be universally well-received (though not quite critically acclaimed), so I decided to go with it first.
So, yeah. Is Sword Art Online worth watching or not?

I cannot definitively say much about Sword Art Online, as I've only seen up to episode 7 so far, but from what I've seen, it's an alright anime, nothing spectacular, but not horrible either.
Now, if there's an anime for me to talk about, it would be any one of these three:
Black Butler
Attack on Titan
Tokyo Ghoul
Tokyo Ghoul is the newest of the bunch, and so far, I really love it. I don't know what it is, but I just love dark, gorey, supernatural-themed animes.

Sword Art Online is nothing special but its not terrible either. The animation and music are fantastic. I watched it and even liked it for two things. The first thing is Kirito is awesome. The second is I have a soft spot of things that are really campy and stupid but have a great mythology underneath all that. Sword Art Online is just that. Its got a spectacular mythology and the exploration on how living in a virtual world with high states long term would effect people psychologically is actually deep. But SOA goes into a cheesy love story with it and then plays some boring house. Then the second arc is terrible.
I'm not really much of an anime fan. I tend to just occasionally watch series that catch my eye which is how I found Guilty Crown which I think is highly underrated. Great music, plot is a little campy and cliche but again its the mythology that makes it awesome even if it does go a bit Eva. The best part is the protagonist Shu Ouma who is a bit like if you took James and turned him into a really dumb teenager to go with the rest of his personality then dragged him into saving the world for his own selfish motives. Shu is the most unlikable protagonist I've even seen and I love him for it.
I recently started Attack on Titan because I learned the guy who did the soundtrack was Hiroyuki Sawano and I adored Guilty Crown. So far I like the action, plot, and characters. I give that one a thumbs up to. I've been meaning to start reading the Manga.
Ofcourse I've seen the first two episodes of Sailor Moon Crystal. Its a fun nostalgia trip although the animation is not quite the greatest and the music is really subpar not so much compared to previously mentioned animes but just comparing it to the original anime.

I think I'll watch SAO after I finish the Log Horizon side-stories, manga, etc. just for the sake of comparison. It's worth watching just for that reason I guess.
The thing with Log Horizon that a lot of people take issue with is the fact that the atmosphere is overall too lighthearted compared to the premise. Basically you've got hundreds and thousands of people trapped inside a game, but instead of finding a way to return to the real world the plot just focuses on making the virtual world a better place to live in by improving the living standards, the economy, et cetera. And there's pretty much zero tension considering the fact that you respawn in a church if you're killed at any point in the game. Yeah, people are trying to get back home, but for now they seem to be pretty used to living in an RPG game it's easy to forget about that fact.
There are also multiple subplots going at once. The cast is split up into various groups that go off on their own different adventures that are loosely connected together. Fortunately it doesn't get too confusing.
Also the romance moves at a turtle's pace throughout around 21 episodes (can't say the story in general moves along all that much faster though) and then they try to remedy this with a filler episode that's full of all the love-triangle romantic tension pent up for over 20 episodes. In other words, the hero, his official girl and her romantic rival (who is 9 years younger than the hero mind you) go to a cake buffet together. And in that same episode the romantic subplot moves about 30 centimeters forward (well it's better than nothing). Basically if what they say about SAO is true--that 98% of the plot is romance--then the opposite applies for Log Horizon.
But despite all its faults I still love it. For one it's got some pretty great character interactions/development, it takes the trapped-in-a-video-game concept and cleverly plays with it, and the combat (however rarely it happens) is pretty awesome. Also here's hoping that the main girl (Akatsuki) gets more appearances in the 2nd season, I was a bit disappointed by how easily she and Naotsugu were shafted midway through the story.

An obvious favorite of mine is Pokemon, I'm also fond of Nisekoi (though in all honesty I do not know now to pronounce it for the life of me, is it: Ny-see-koi?), and I just started Seven Deadly Sins, it's not bad. By the way, is the 1997 anime "Golden Time" worth watching? I'm not sure if it's worth searching, it's not on YouTube, and to be honest the back stories kind a weird, plus, I'd rather not spend hours looking for an episode EDIT: Sometime after I originally posted this, I watched the Anime: Kanon, English Dub, and I LOVED IT!!!! Seriously, its great, go watch it. I'm also watching the English Dub of Karin, some vampire Anime that I guess was stupid enough to watch . I'm also working my way through Clannad, it's a decent Anime that has some of the elements I appreciated from Kanon, but with two characters literally na,Ed Tomaya, I seriously get lost with some of the characters, especially when all the credits are in Japanese.

You know. I feel like laying down a recommendation for a manga and I typically don't do this. This will probably seem stupid because this for probably the most overrated manga in print right now. But if you've only seen the Anime and atleast halfway liked the Anime its completely worth it to check out the Attack on Titan manga. The Anime is a very close adaption so far so you can jump into Vol 9. chapter 35 right after finishing. Its worth reading just for the twists and turns and the setup of the moment its all lead up to now. It'll be interesting to see if season 2 stays so close since. Attack on Titan Chapter 65 Spoiler Holy crap! I can hardly keep up with what character is on which side now since it seems like Kenny Ackerman was a traitor and I'm still trying to figure out all the stuff about the history of the Ackermans and how the Asian race in this universe is immune to the universal mind wipe that hit everyone outside of the Reiss family. I just wanted to take a moment to say RIP Eren if he goes down in the next chapter. I can't tell exactly what this series is going to do and its weird. I haven't really liked Eren at all. He's one of the lamest protagonists ever, he only ever gets curbstomped, and just gets kidnapped all the time. Eren has been more of a MacGuffin that a character. Now he''s realized this in universe. I have to hand it to Isayama particularly since this is a pretty overrated series. He's done a heck of a job making me feel so sorry for Eren's situation who is pretty much the end result of his own dad's giant screw up (who's motives still have not been explained and I think completely tops Shinji's dad as the worst Anime dad of all time which just saying that is a testament to how messed up this guy was) and is one major screw up after another everybody and their mom dies over and now he's realized it. The way he asked Historia to just put him out of his misery. I teared up quite a bit in this chapter.
