I saw the new 'Top Gear' opening episode: I have to say it was worth watching. They were as funny as ever. Jeremy really fooled me with what we could expect to see in the next 7 weeks. The second video was what I was expecting to see.
The challenge was a good challenge and I was laughing when Jeremy and James left Richard behind. I cannot believe Richard waited 2 full hours for a recovery vehicle to come to his rescue. But the man just spent his time on his phone and then just drove off. I was pleased when he got rescued in the end, and then turned up in a replacement car. He really had James and Jeremy fooled for a moment.
The star in the reasonably priced car was a good choice to have on the show. Will.I.Am is certainly a busy man, and his lap time on the track ceratinly earned him a place on the board.
The Stig's italian cousin had me laughing when three girls followed him out of the coach. That was certainly worth watching, especially in that suit he was wearing.

Does anyone know how much of the show is stage and how much is real? I was watching the India Special (which was great, btw), and I kept thinking to myself: was this staged? Did they really not know what would happen if their posters on the train got in half? Did they really bore all those people at the garden party to death? Did Hammond really not see what was happening to his Mini because of the winch? It all left me quite puzzled.

Just to let everyone know that the new 20th Series of 'Top Gear' has begun on BBC2. They have shown Episode 3 yesterday and I am still waiting to see it.
The new Reasonably Priced Car is a great car and it seems to do a better job than the last one they had.

Pah this suspension will blow over. Clarkson is too dam popular to be sacked without really doing something over the top. The show is always pushing the boat out and that is part of its appeal. Lets be honest May by himself is too nice and Hammond needs someones to lock horns with. I can't really picture anyone replacing him for a few more years at least.

Top Gear without Clarkson, Hammond, or May isn't Top Gear. Simple as that. If the BBC fire Clarkson, it will be the end.

I've already popped this in the Shoutbox, but, although it's certainly looking like it could head that way, a lot of the 'evidence' is open to interpretation and really relies on reading between the lines. Look at the links they've given you below. Reading them with fresh, unbiased eyes instead of having a mediator tell (ie. auto evolution) telling you how you should be reading it, you have to join the dots in a particular way to reach the conclusion they have, and even then, it's not certain enough to report as fact, but that is the unfortunate way that the media operates. Therein lies their sensationalism to increase readership. Case in point; someone has read it and shared it even here while Auto Evolution watches their hits rack up.
Personally, I'll be sitting and waiting for something more concrete. But, admittedly, it's not looking good.
One wonders if Channel 4 could buy the format from the BBC. Would the BBC really dare try to switch Clarkson with someone else?

Hmm, I wouldn't know. If it does happen that way, we'd better expect a lot of advert breaks - not very popular with everyone, I'm sure. As far as this news of Top Gear goes, I have wondered in the past whether Jeremy Clarkson would go too far. Much as I do find him humourous (and much as my parents and I love watching Top Gear together for many reasons), this is the same person who showed how contradictory he could be by dismissing the Shinkansen as "out of the stone age" or something to that effect when racing against it in one episode and yet raced Tornado against the others in another - with high praise for the steam engine. And that was coming from someone who came from Doncaster originally! It's hard to tell how serious he is on so many occasions. Even without trivial things like that, I've always thought I'd find him rather difficult to deal with if we met in person, however much of an honour it would be. Similarly, one of the many reasons I love Steam Locos In Profile is because, even if it started with that race with Tornado and even though it's been compared with Top Gear so often, it makes more of an effort to not be insensitive than Top Gear does, especially (I regret to admit) coming from Jeremy Clarkson. Whereas the latter's dialogue often contains witticisms that raise people's hackles, our CTX is much more tactful than that and treats both the subject and his audiences with more professional respect. This is no reflection of Clarkson himself and I'm not against him but, if the worst does happen, I'm afraid it won't be too much of a shock for me.

I've heard that that was from an article in 1999, not 2015, so there's still hope.

There hasn't been anything officially announced by the BBC yet. At this point it is all speculation and rumour. I think that if they do fire Clarkson they will still at least try to finish the series with Hammond and may doing the links and narration instead.

Neither do I. The show isn't quite the same without Jeremy. Actually, he made the show entertaining to begin with.

Was saving this for tomorrow night when the new 'Top Gear' comes on, but I thought I'd type it now so I don't forget. If you're going to be watching the final episode tomorrow, do give this a read.
You know, the BBC can make some foolish decisions. Like making 'The Voice' (their equivilant of 'The X-Factor'), closing down BBC3 & announcing a 'Teletubbies' reboot where they have touch-screens instead of TV screens in their stomachs. But do you know what out-ranks all three in my mind? Top Gear being cancelled.
I have a lot of time for Top Gear, indeed most of us do... we didn't just watch it to see Ferrari's going fast or to know what hatchbacks are better than the others. We watched it for the banter. We loved to see Jeremy, Richard & James build silly things like amphibious cars or challenging each other in three different vehicles with both challenges or races against their tame racing driver. We even, at a push, just wanted to watch them argue & bicker like young boys.
Sadly, after much controversey (albiet some clearly unnecessary or some not even intentional at all), Clarkson has been sacked. And since Hammond & May refuse to film the show without him, it's pretty much over. To some, it's like the passing of an old friend, or in my case the retirement of a steam engine because of age or mechanical problems. It was a great show, and it didn't deserve to go out like this...
However, the show will always be in our memories. It's hard to think that tomorrow at 8pm, we Top Gear fans will be watching a piece of TV History. Like the final episode of 'The Goon Show' or 'Blackadder Goes Fourth', this will be one of Top Gear's finest hours. The BBC can try & tempt us with the promise of another series with Chris Evans in Jeremy's place, but it'll never be the same.
A friend of mine once said that 'Top Gear is one of the best things the BBC has ever made'. And do you know what? I think he may be right.

I heard that they're considering making a new car show for the online market (Netflix or something like it). Do you think that's a likely prospect?

I saw the new 'Top Gear' tonight on BBC2 and here is what I thought of it. {Spoiler}I had a feeling it was going to be different, but this wasn't how I had expected to be.
First, the intro was still the same, but it did have a surprising new feel in a way.
The challenges they had seemed alright, but I couldn't help but feel like parts of it were going to be predictable. The man in the white coat was one of the best things that made the challenges exciting. But now they are gone and this new mayor person is in their place, I don't think I could like him as he doesn't look at least bit interesting.
The new 'Star in a Reasonably Priced Car' has been changed and I never even expected that. I don't like that to be honest and I think the new route we see has ruined the route. The new car is completely pathetic and I cannot see which celebrity would want to do that. The way the stars came in for that bit was sort of good, but I prefer the old version.
As for the presenters: well, I'll start with Chris Evans. He seems good to start with, but I have to think that he was trying a bit too hard and he seemed to be treating the place like it was 'Live and Kicking'. He speaks to the audience a bit too much and the way he acted seemed a bit over the top.
Matt Le Blanc was ok and I liked how he seemed to fit in well. But there was a part where he was trying to do a James May moment in the show. That, I wasn't too pleased about that. He seemed to be like Jeremy Clarkson in a way when he did his challenge with the Nomad vehicle.
My response, I think these two aren't quite ready for the job just yet. They are going to need to work on their game and show that they can do the job right. I'm sorry, but this doesn't impress me the slightest bit. It looked ok to start with, but as the show went on, I couldn't bring myself to think that this could be something I could watch again. I'm not even sure I can watch next week's episode.
