I'm deeply shocked. NTA has been known to rig results before (Ant and Dec before), but I find that even harder to believe.
Especially considering how Top Gear came 1st place in 'Best Shows of the Decade' on Channel 4 earlier this year!

I was unfortunately sharing Simon's opinions when Loose Women won the "Best Factual" programme. I could go on endlessly on the brainless viewers who voted for it but inarguably the award had Top Gear's name on it. On another note I was quite pleased that Stephen Fry won the TV personality of the year, mainly due to his amiability and the fact that the award wasn't given to other Room 101 candidates like Piers Morgan and Myleene Klass.

I've watched the opener to the series but has anybody else here? It seemed OK as an average episode IMHO and the Robin Reliant portion was amusing enough but I think Jeremy milked it with the crashes. Also I'm wondering if you've spotted the error on tonight's credits. The endcap states that it was made in MMXX (in roman numerals), which is wrong because that would read 2020.

I did, actually, and it was a grand start to a new series - sure, Jeremy's crashes may have been OTT for some, but I simply couldn't stop giggling at the many times one can "crash" a Reliant Robin. The News Report was the icing, I think. And I also enjoyed Jeremy and Richard whirring out the new Reasonably Priced Car and Time Board with an interesting slant on the "Star in Priced Car" section. Although I'd feel the same way if I were in the Hamster's soggy boots there... And as for James May tackling a mountain - gawd, that helped with last night's heatwave, didn't it? But it was still pretty epic nonetheless. Overall, great to see the boys back. Sunday nights need not ever be boring again!

Overall, great to see the boys back. Sunday nights need not ever be boring again! Well, at least not for the next month or so! I do look forward to TopGear coming on our screens, but I always think the series ends much too quickly. No sooner has one series started, it's finished again. Six episodes is not enough in my opinion. Mind you, they do fit a lot of content into each episode. I thought the first of this series was very funny. The highlights have to be the crashes in Reliant Robin and the " Interruption" whilst the Stig drove the Bentley round the track, mimicking the advert going over goal scored by Embarrassment United the other week. I'm eagerly awaiting the rest of the series!

Who else watched Top Gear last night? I adore Rowan Atkinson, and he is very unassuming. However the main reason I wanted to comment is because of the boys' attempt to make trains cheaper. The inspectors included Steve Davies, and I just thought that the entire challenge was brilliantly done, albeit in the style of being ambitious but ultimately rubbish.
But one question: How were they able to travel along the tracks, without interfering with the timetables?

The producers must have gotten permission from the railway to use thier line for the challenge. One thing that I kept thinking of, when Jeremy was trying to pull the caravan coaches with the Jag, was Traction tyres. I don't know if BR still use them for their engines but they would have helped them with getting a good start off and help braking, Unlike James' attempt. But still it was quite enjoyable to watch.

I'm pleased that you all enjoyed it! Coes I was the one that gave them the idea! A few month a ago I sent an e-mail to Top Gear to do a train challenge! I put in the Great Central Railway as one of the place's to do it. I had no idea that caravans where going to be used as I had put in that they can tweek it up! And I did get a repley that they where going to show to the prdusesers of the show. Boy it was a good one!

And yet, it was brilliant rubbish - one of my current-fave challenges so far. But the way the guys were going on, you'd think that even James May, railway buff, would have known that road-rail vehicles have existed - and still do - since the 1930's Still, what I did learn from this week's challenge were three things: - The TVG12 sounds remarkably like the Tardis when on the rails;
- Rowan Atkinson can still make people laugh with verbal and facial comedy; and;
- We may have discovered not an alternative means of cheap Train Travel....but another method of smashing up a ruddy caravan ;D

But one question: How were they able to travel along the tracks, without interfering with the timetables? Looking at a video on YouTube, it was shot on a Monday, which was more than likely a non-operating day for the Great Central, so with the exception of the Class 47, 08 (which were both running wrong road anyway) and the Peak(?) there wouldn't of been any other trains running that day. As for the rest of the show, when I saw Rowan Atkinson was on the show I had a feeling of how well he would do as the Star in a Reasonably Priced Car given his interests. And as said above, he can still make people laugh with just funny faces and saying things strangely, I was rolling about with laughter during that interview!

That was probably one of the better challenges they've done in a long time - utterly nonsense but brilliant. Saying that, does anyone else share my thoughts in that the challenges are just becoming too obviously outrageous? I got a DVD of the earlier challenges such as the first boat one, the truffle race, the super car for less of a grand one etc. and what still makes them enjoyable is how much of that is - or at least appears - realistic. Okay, I know they staged some of the happenings in those for entertainment but you could tell that most of those were off the cuff and the reactions were geniune - which for me makes it more funny or even touching. The best one for me entertainment wise is when Clarkson drove a Jaguar (i think?) from London to Edinburgh and back on one tank of petrol. Was it as exciting or had as many mishaps as the recent ones? No - but the geniune reaction of Clarkson's fear of running out and failing to the moment he does it makes better television. Whilst most of the 'staged' occurances are sometimes funny it just seems cheap and sketch showy Alternatively - should I just audition for Grumpy Old Men?

Christopher: *Facepalm* I had forgotten all about the the road/rail vehicles. But yes it was just utterly brilliant. Theonlyadzrulz: That would explain a lot, I thought that they had started the challenge at supid o'clock in the morning, so they wouldn't end up disrupting the train timetables. Jimbob: I agree, as much as I love Top Gear, the challenges are getting a little bit silly and staged, but this was just excellent. Plus I love the cheap car challenges anyway, and the other chalenge I adore completely is the Tornado, Jaguar, Motorcycle race from London to Edinburgh. But after saying all of that I still think you'd make an excellent Grumpy Old Man. Everyone: It is obvious Rowan Atkinson still has it, and probably has never lost it, and I would love him to be back on our television screens in another sitcom.

I've only started watching TG a few weeks ago, and am head over heels for it. It's such a brilliant show, and it's a shame that the seasons are each so short. I've heard them make references to Postman Pat, Fireman Sam, and Noddy, to name a few, so I only hope they'll reference another kids show soon. And both train specials, Tornado and the homemade trains, are simply the greatest things I've ever seen on television.

Re: Great CentralYes, that was a great episode. I'm also very fond of Rowan Atkinson - I grew up with him as the actor behind Mr Bean and later the various episodes of Blackadder - so to see him in person on Top Gear was the chance of a lifetime. He really knows how to be the entertainer we know and love! I wasn't, however, impressed with the attitude that the presenters showed to the railway challenges. Their behaviour was right up there in line with the general attitude towards railways that worked in the years leading up to the Beeching Cuts. And I'm afraid Clarkson was particularly shameless that time. Just seeing a caravan marked 'Scum Class' immediately made me wonder if he was taking the idea of a feudal system too literally. So it's as well that that particular caravan got blasted to bits by a Peak at the end! It makes a nice change from using explosives, as one might do on Brainiac. Re: IndiaSince then, I suspect that there's been even more controversy. In fact, India in general has risen in protest over it - the point scoring that went on was appalling. To be honest, I don't even have a problem with India being a key manufacturer in the world but, if Britain was to stay in the league with them, they could at least have the courtesy to respect each other's cultures, instead of launching indecent innuendoes at each other. It could also be argued, I suppose, that they didn't even try to accelerate the Rolls when they were trying to winch it up the slope. Teamwork from both cars would likely have done it. But no. They must have been determined to follow the, er...'boys with toys' motto. No wonder the Mini's front end nearly flew off altogether! Don't get me wrong however: those are only trivial details. Apart from that, Top Gear has been a great source of entertainment over the years and, although tact doesn't go amiss, at least freedom of speech isn't being violated. At the end of the day, it makes for very great entertainment and I can see exactly why it's got such a big following among the public.

The thing with the India special was that at no stage did they take the mickey out of the country- they showed it as it is, warts and all, and spent the rest of the time lampooning themselves.
View it from the classic 'British idiots abroad' angle and you come to realise Clarkson, May and Hammond are not only doing the gags... they're the stooges too.
Incidentally, 0.04% of the viewers of that episode complained. That figure says a lot, doesn't it?
