I saw the new Planet of the Apes, and it definitely matched up to its predecessors. It was very intense and very well done!

I actually saw it last night too. Have to agree with the above, actually felt my heart strings being pulled a bit and to keep spoilers brief I loved the homage setting. I might catch it on the tele down the road but I'm giving Dunkirk a miss as i'm a bit wary of Hollywood WW2 dramas so Ragnarok looks like it's gonna be the next, can't wait

I've seen new Planet of the Apes too. I thought that was very good, very sad in places too. What I was surprised about is this director is going to direct the new Batman film. Going by this film I think he could be a good choice. Time will tell. I saw Cars 3 yesterday and coming from someone who didn't like Cars 2 that much (Pixar's weakest in my view) I enjoyed it. I could defiantly feel for Lightening when he had his accidents and new cars coming in the race and being better than the old cars gave me a feel for the whole Steam and Diesels scenario in Thomas. That was exactly who Reverend Awdry made the steam engines see the diesels. The cartoon before the movie was one of the best too. I recommend that.

I highly recommend DUNKIRK to anyone who hasn't seen it. Christopher Nolan has knocked it out of the park again, and I think this may be his best work, in my opinion. The story is simple, the execution is fascinating (the way he flashes back and forward), and the action, of course, is great. The best parts are all of the aerial sequences where he strapped IMAX film cameras (non of that digital nonsense) onto real fighter planes from back in the day. I would have liked at least one barrel roll, but I understand they're old and probably couldn't make that happen.
I saw it twice on opening day (which I never ever do). I went to the matinee showing of the 70mm IMAX, which was less than half full, and an afternoon showing in another theater of a regular 70mm format, which was a quarter full. If you can, see it in 70mm IMAX. The extra resolution and screen height make it a truly absorbing experience. If you can't, then regular 70mm is also a beautiful sight. If neither, just see it in a theater anyway because it won't ever be the same on a TV!

Hello SIF. Popping back here with a rant on a new film based on a old childrens book character. I'm leaving it in the spoiler space to save room. The other day on Facebook, I saw a trailer for a new live action Peter Rabbit movie. Of course, "live action" belongs in inverted commas because like Disney's live action Jungle Book (the one from 2016, not the older live action one or any other live action Jungle Books) and the 00s live action Scooby Doo movies, this is a movie where the animals characters are animated by CGI.
Now I'm not slagging the movie off because it's a live action adaptation. It's because of what I came across in the trailer and plot.
The trailer involves Peter Rabbit inviting a bunch of animals around to a house party in Mr McGregor's house.
I wondered to myself if this was someone's idea of a late April Fool's Prank. So, I surfed the web for a synopsis, and found one. It involves Peter getting into competition with Mr McGregor for the affections of his new next door neighbour.
My impression? This is not a Peter Rabbit film. This is a film that happens to have a bunch of animals who bear a resemblance to Beatrix Potter's characters and happen to share their names, in some film with a plot that would be more appropriate for teenagers or adults. The plot of the film resembles something from a "comedy" film I'd expect to see Zac Efron or Will Ferrell in.
Peter Rabbit was created as a childrens book series, so to have this film with a mature plot feels wrong. It is not true to Beatrix Potter's spirit, nor is it appropriate for children. Sony would have been better off creating their own characters. This is not Batman who has had lighthearted and dark works. This is an innocent series of childrens books that Sony seems to think is appropriate to turn into a grown up (HAH!) comedy film.
And as for Sony, what do they think they're doing? This year they have turned themselves into a laughing stock with The Emoji Movie. With what they're doing to Beatrix Potter's work, are they trying to drump up as much negative publicity as possible. Then again, given negative publicity caused The Emoji Movie to do well in the box office...
Given what they've done to Peter Rabbit, I don't think it's a bad think they stopped Gendy Tartakovsky's Popeye.

I agree Cranky Conner. Sony pictures is on an embarrassing run at the moment. They've screwed over loads of franchises. Spiderman, Ghostbusters, Dark Tower and now Peter Rabbit. From what I saw of their proposed Popeye film. It didn't look bad. The animation and voices seem decent. But to choose Emoji over Popeye was disgraceful.
Maybe Sony Studios should stick to making consoles in the future.

Debating whether to pop to the cinema before Justice League comes out shortly, would anyone rate the new Blade Runner?

Debating whether to pop to the cinema before Justice League comes out shortly, would anyone rate the new Blade Runner? Blade Runner 2049 is a wonderful film! It ties very neatly into both the world and plot of the first one, and is quite excellent in its own right. And of course, it challenges the concepts of humanity and existence in a similar yet fresh way to the original. Solid performances from all the actors, and a very well represented setting which definitely feels like a continuation from Blade Runner's dark and scary world of 2019. There are also three short films bridging the gap between the two movies: Black Out 2022, Nexus Dawn and Nowhere to Run. I'd certainly recommend watching these as well. If I was to give it a rating, I'd probably say 9/10.

Well as Thor is out on Tuesday I might pass it up now and just wait for the DVD but good to know it's worth a gander (it's been quite some years since i've seen the original so wouldn't of minded rewatching it before seeing the sequel anyway and i'll see if I can track down those shorts). A bit off subject but I bought Kubo and the Two Strings a while back as it was going cheap and I had heard good things about it. Being a kids film I was still a little dubious about watching it with a chum over some beers but it's awesome (something I never thought I would say about a film with Mathew McConaughey on the cast list ). Not a film but I'm also enjoying the Cinematic's Jessica Jones (one disc to go). Yes it's not as good as the first season of Daredevil and some night scenes are a little too dark to see properly but it's better than I thought it was going to be. I know Americans have a thing about casting evil Brits but while it's still a little odd that David Tennent is playing Killgrave his pervertedness has really been fleshed out well across the episodes, as I can't recall him and his power set being used this effectively in the more action heavy comics and Krysten Ritter's not too shabby in the performance department either.

So Thor: Ragnarok was good, definitely the funnier of the Thor Films and to some degree kind of like the Guardians of the Galaxy films. Excellent chemistry again between Hemsworth and Hiddleston as Thor & Loki, along with Anthony Hopkins as Odin, and Cate Blanchett certainly an excellent villan as Hela - to a degree she reminded me a bit of Elizabeth Banks' portrayal of Rita Repulsa in the Power Rangers Movie.
I did miss seeing her ladyship; Lady Sif, but I get it as to why she wasn't in it, but now I'm trying to figure out how they're going to play her into any future instalments of Thor's sole adventures (if any) or generally in the universe as a whole since she wasn't there or had any mention as to where she was.
However, and a little spoiler, when I couldn't get to see one of my favourite Women in the MCU, I still got a glimpse of another, so I'm satisfied about that. But I eagerly await on Avengers Infinity War, because if that wasn't already highly anticipated, then its certainly gotten that bit more from me after seeing Ragnarok.
Next film on my list is Justice League, followed of course by the most highly anticipated film of 2017; The Last Jedi. I enjoyed Wonder Woman, but didn't enjoy Dawn of Justice - except from when Wonder Woman appeared in that movie, but with all that has gone on when its come to the Justice League it may turn out better than many hoped after the somewhat disappointment from Dawn of Justice.

I've seen Thor Ragnarok for myself and I enjoyed it too. I say it's the best of the three. A good move partnering up Thor with Hulk. Jeff Goldblum had a good part too. Good Easter eggs to spot as well.
I am planning os seeing Justice League but if it has bad reviews then I may reconsider. I am already planning on doing the same with the Venom movie that is currently being planned. That's by Sony pictures who have had a terrible record recently and this Venom movie looks like it's just them rushing a shared movie universe. After the latest Spiderman film, Venom isn't ready to shoe up yet.
I've always got my Star Wars ticket booked for opening day and first showing on Imax too. Really looking forward to it. 80% of seats were booked after 24 hours so it may be wise to book now if you haven't yet. Biggest task now is to avoid spoilers online (I managed successfully with Journey Beyond Sodor and the ending for that was leaked before release) which is going to be a challange. Apparently the poster gives something away so avoid that if you can but if not, just because it's on a poster doesn't mean it will happen which was my experience with the last Transformers film.

I know Sony have failed to hit the mark on more than one occasion but what was wrong with the last Spidy? I haven't really seen anything on the Venom project but admit i'm not so keen on him getting a solo movie, might if the trailers look promising. Yep I'd say Thor Ragnarok is definitely worth a watch and it's easily the most fun of the three though I also found the lack of SiF's presence odd (like Rusty I can see why she was off 'on a mission' somewhere during the upheaval though ). I wouldn't really compare her with Rita Repulsa as Hela wasn't hamming it up in the same fashion but Cate Blanchett was perfectly cast and was my favourite element of this instalment, seriously in both looks and performance she nailed it. I'm a lot less sure about Justice League but it can't be worse than Dawn of Justice (dear god I hope it won't be). The Wonder Woman movie was fine though it will take a lot more than Gal to hold this team up, will be cool to see The Flash get the big screen treatment at long last though give me John DiMaggio's Aquaman any day

Spiderman Homecoming was good but that was a joint project with Marvel studios which is why Spidey is now part of that. Marvel Studios are on a great run at the moment. They've done wonders with the MCU so much that other studios want to do what they do (some have failed). Amazing Spider-Man 2 was a huge disappointment. Instead of telling a great story they were too focused on doing loads of spin-offs.
I've played Injustice 2 a lot recently and I reckon Aquaman is going to be the biggest disappointment in Justice League. He looks nothing like the comic book version he was based on. Yes I know Aquaman has been very lame in some versions but he's been great in others. Not long to wait now before we find out if it wasn't as bad as we thought it was.

Saw Thor: Ragnorok tonight and it was great! I highly recommend seeing it. All the actors were top notch, and there were a few twists I didn't expect. Much like the latest Guardians of the Galaxy film. Can't wait to watch it again when the DVD is released

Just watched Justice. It plods along ok but it's still not up to Marvel Cinematic Universe standard in my opinion. The Flash was fun though and as long as you don't go in with high expectations it ticks enough boxes, nice to see the Parademons have some presence rather than just be the usual punching bag minions. Oh btw there is a clip right at the end of the credits if you can wait long enough.

So with Last Jedi around the corner, thought I might as well discuss the last film that I saw last month: Justice League, which I actually enjoyed it - despite what many critics and others have said about it.
I'll admit, it isn't the best of the DCEU films (although many hard-core DC fans will say its the best thing ever). Yes it does struggle between tones, obviously in change of directors you can tell there, and yes it is rushed in places - to which the sudden change in time duration made by Warner Bros executives didn't help, to which I wonder whether that they'd be expecting a disaster as with Dawn Of Justice. But I felt that Justice League was better than Dawn Of Justice, and yes its definitely rushed getting there because as I've said many times that DC are really losing out to Marvel.
In terms of the cast, obviously love Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman - then again if your a typical guy like me, how can you not love her? She's perfectly casted, and as Aquaman said: "She's Gorgeous", especially when she dawns the Wonder Woman attire. Jeremy Irons is definitely a good Alfred (though the late Michael Gough will always be my favourite Alfred), and I actually preferred Henry Cavill's portrayal of Superman here than in both Man Of Steel and Dawn Of Justice. Of course, there's been a lot of talk of a reshape for the DCEU, so I wonder how that'll playout.
Obviously next film for me is of course: The Last Jedi, which I've got my ticket booked. I am tempted by Jumanji Welcome to the Jungle, purely because Karen Gillan is in it, but we'll see.

I've also seen Justice League. I enjoyed it a lot better than I thought I was. I had low expectations for that especially after Batman V Superman and Suicide Squad but Justice League was better than those two films. Does have a few problems though. I did enjoy the post credit scene.
I've just got back from Star wars
{Spoiler}Absolutely enjoyed it. I thought it was very good. Loved seeing Mark Hammil back as Luke Skywalker after his brief cameo at the end of Force Awakens. I also enjoyed Carrie Fisher's final performance too. I think us Star Wars fans can say we're going to miss her and she'll always be royalty to us.
The new character were good too. I felt the new cast we're good too. Disney are doing a good job with Star Was so far. Keep up the good work I say.

I saw The Last Jedi before Christmas and was left quite baffled and let down - finding myself preferring both Rogue One and Force Awakens, so then I saw it a second time with a family member after Boxing Day and said family member was really disappointed about Last Jedi and preferred Justice League. So some of my thoughts about Last Jedi are as follows: I've read comments on how it's a masterpiece and brilliant as well as the overly stretched 'best Star Wars Movie ever' with some saying better than The Empire Strikes Back and I think to myself: "Whatever Movie you saw, wasn't the Movie I saw. Unless I saw it from another planet where everything is all Utopias" because no way is it better than Empire (and I ended up watching Empire after I first saw Last Jedi, and enjoyed that more than Last Jedi), its probably worse than Attack of the Clones because I know how much people loathe that Movie (probably more so than Phantom Menace, and I ended up watching that after the second viewing of Last Jedi and enjoyed that more than Last Jedi - despite its flaws and what a majority dislike about it which I totally understand why). Yes Last Jedi looked good with actual sets and practical effects, but it lacked story and I ain't buying the whole parentage subject. There's more to Rey and Kylo than they're letting on and that's that, and I wouldn't be surprised if JJ does exactly what George Lucas did with the reveal in Return of the Jedi from what you thought wasn't in Empire Strikes Back because after all he obviously had the idea behind that duo.
Also, upon several visits to Disney's Hollywood Studios last September when I was in Orlando, they make a really big deal for Captain Phasma with her own show; known as March of the First Order, and yes JJ Abrams said that she'd would get more time in Last Jedi. Here's the thing, she was probably more wasted than in Force Awakens (and that's saying something). Yeah she briefly gets to use her blaster, yes they showcased that her armoury is pretty bada**, but once again she's wasted. You'd think that with this being a Darker Film, that the Villains would ultimately get their revenge as much as the Empire did in Empire Strikes Back, but no that's totally flushed down the toilet because once again Phasma was ultimately wasted and is presuming bunked off completely - same possibly with Snoke.
At least the Prequels attempted to give us something, despite their flaws, but Last Jedi just took everything that left you intrigued from Force Awakens and just threw it all in the bin. I know that Critics loathed Justice League, but for me that was better than Last Jedi. Yeah it wasn't great, and had a last minute decision on its duration when it was clearly meant to be longer than it actually was and struggles between tones, but it still had something that Last Jedi just didn't. Also, it's just Empire & Jedi as one and of course where do they go from here knowing where it was meant to go with the main focus being more on Leia. So yeah, I was one of those fans that was really let down by Last Jedi. The only character I really rooted for was Poe Dameron, because he actually got more to do here than in Force Awakens But most recently, I saw Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle, and I must say... it really took away my disappointment with Last Jedi. Yes, I saw it solely for Karen Gillan, but it definitely has a good cast - especially with Jack Black's character, I don't think any other actor could have played his part better. I thought The Rock and Kevin Hart had great chemistry, especially when their playing personas that are completely different to how they actually look. But Jack & Kevin had me laughing, and Karen of course had me drooling. Next film on my list for 2018 is Black Panther, with him appearing in Infinity War it'll be interesting to see how his story will coincide with the upcoming events of Infinity War.

It felt like I was watching Battlestar Galactica in places which felt odd in a core Star Wars film but I actually preferred Last Jedi to the rehash that was Force Awakens (if you've not seen it already don't read on). Yes I won't pretend it was perfect nor would I dream of claiming it to be superior to Strikes Back but it thankfully took some turns I wasn't expecting and so now almost anything can happen with the final instalment. Skywalker's departure bugged me in the cinema but mulling on it after I thought the tax it would of took made it real enough, will shore up my opinion after the DVD release but I can see why Mark Hamill didn't feel overjoyed on how his long awaited reprisal played out. Gwendoline was wasted as Phasma I agree, though like Marvel's Hela I wouldn't count her out just yet... Not sure what to expect with the Black Panther movie as I avoid trailers of films I'm gonna see regardless but Shape of the Water looks interesting (bit gutted to find out it's not a prequel to Hellboy but still intrigued, films starring Sally Hawkins are a little hit and miss in my opinion but I'm hopeful here). Anywho just seen The Thee Billboards film. I think it's a little unfair to compare it to a Cohen Brothers film but I really enjoyed it. Great cast, plenty of black humour and the pace keeps things ticking along just right
