Lots of Dresden Dolls songs make me sad. Namely
Delilah Me & The Minibar 672 (This song is 1 1/2 minutes long, but I was listening to the part with amanda holding the note and I just started crying) Half Jack Slide
Darlin and Already Gone by the Exit are sad ones too.
Cancer by My Chemical Romance.
Come Clarity and Evil In A Closet by In Flames
Sleep by Willdo
Al Kol Eileh by the Kol Miriam Choir
All these songs are really sad.

"Sailing" by Rod Stewart. I saw him play it live on Valentine's Day and just broke down.

For me, some of the saddest songs are: Nearer My God to Thee, My Heart Will Go On: Celine Dion, and Dvorak's Going Home. I don't care what anyone says, but these songs always bring a tear to my eye.

Jo-Dee Messina: Even God Must Get The Blues Jo-Dee Messina/Tim McGraw: Bring On The Rain John Farnham: Burn For You Adam Brand: Little Girl Anastacia: How Come The World Won't Stop? Dixie Chicks: Cold Day In July Troy Cassar-Daley: Away From Here Snow Patrol: Set The Fire To The Third Bar Snow Patrol: Chasing Cars
I highly recommend Jo-Dee Messina's "Even God Must Get The Blues". Just have a listen or a read of the lyrics. It really pulls at the heartstrings. Anastacia's "How Come The World Won't Stop?" was featured on a short film about the aftermath of 9/11, which is where I first heard it.

American Pie is always a sad one. As are Far Away (Nickelback) I Don't Wanna Miss a Thing (Aerosmith) I'm Already There (Lonestar) My Immortal (Evanescence) Time (Alan Parsons Project) With or Without You (U2) Hey There Delilah (as if you haven't heard it by now) is a tear-jerker, one of my personal favorites. My brother quite likes 'I'll be Missing you' by (I think it's) Puff Daddy & Faith Evans *Barfs* This destroyed "Every Breath You Take" Yeah I know it's about the death of Biggie Smalls or 2Pac or whoever, but still. *barfs again*

The Lost Chord - Sir Arthur Sullivan
I think it's the story behind it that makes it sad more than anything. Sir Arthur had been trying to set the words (by a lady named Adelaide Proctor) to music for ages. In 1877 his brother Fred fell seriously ill, and suffered a slow and lingering death. It was while keeping a vigil by his brother's bedside that Sullivan composed the piece, and the manuscript is dated just five days before Fred's death. It really is a beautiful song, and brought a tear to my eye when I first heard it.

Sad songs? Where do I start??!! The top ones for me are, in no particular order...
When You're Gone, AVRIL LAVIGNE Better Place (Kate's Song), BERNIE NOLAN (Of 'The Nolans') I Won't Last A Day Without You, THE CARPENTERS It's Such A Heartache, DOLLY PARTON Eagle When She Flies, DOLLY PARTON (again) Who Wants To Live Forever, SARAH BRIGHTMAN'S VERSION
A couple of months ago, I lost my first boyfriend to a real evil illness. When he died I had to avoid these songs, because I know the effect they have on me. The Avril Lavigne song came out just before he died, and he said it would be our song. Today I found this thread for the first time. As I sat here typing, I thought it about time to liste to them. I have. I've wept buckets. I've cried tears of sorrow, and slowly I've begun to laugh as I've remembered the good times. So thank-you SIF, and everyone of you who have contributed to it, for making me feel better, stronger, and happier.

for me the saddest songs are those that remind me of friends I have lost, especially someone who meant the world to me who I have not seen in over 4 years. such songs include Cyndi Lauper's 'true colours', Sting's 'fields of gold', Annie Lennox's 'no more 'I love you's''.
Those three are the one I can think of but there were a lot more that no longer seem so sad after so long. However the theme is pretty clear.

Lemme think.
Nearer my god to thee. My Heart will go on. Cas No Shadow by Oasis-because it always reminds me of when Dream Team had two minutes left to run.

Guns 'N Roses' November Rain is one of the most beautiful songs ever. Period. The video is even better. It was adapted from a story called "Without You" by Del James. The story is disturbing, but the song is absolutely gorgeous.

4 The E. A song made by DJ Yella (featurin' Kokane) that was dedicated to the late Eazy E after his death. It had a bit of a sad & slow beat but a good chorus. Crossroads Another song dedicated to Eazy E. Made by his protoge group, Bone-Thugs-N-Harmony. Also talks about death in general.

Two personal ones for me are 'No One But You' by Queen and 'New Kid In Town' by The Eagles.
The latter is the less painful of the two. But when I hear the verse 'Night after night, you're willing to hold her, just hold her, tears on your shoulder', it changes the mood I'm in for the worse.

I find the song Some Day by All-4-One quite emotional. it feels like a community of people who have had a bad lifestyle, for example time zones like the Great World wars, and the situation in places like Africa, or people who've just had a rough life. it reprecents people who have hope of a better life, and carry on praying that one day things will be better.

Two personal ones for me are 'No One But You' by Queen Can't argue there, Chris. The more I hear 'No One But You', I can't help but feel sad thinking about all those who left us before their time. In my opinion, Queen did wonders with that song.
