If i like it i'll listern to it but there are alot of modern bands which have lyrics which want to make me commit suicide!!! I can't see the late 90s and todays music ever being called classics. The ever lasting music, for me is the late 70s up to the early 90s. Who, in twenty years time will remember some of the bands of today? Yet mention Status Que, Queen, Meat Loaf etc and i'm sure there'll be a few hands up. Mine definitely included!

I think the state of modern music is a mixed bag, entirely. When it comes to the 'music' that's at the top of the charts, then it's in a pitiful state. It's all terrible, the rap especially. At the same time, there's really a lot of diversity beyond that- especially with alternative, and when you consider that it's not really all that bad. Granted, music from the 60's and 70's seems to be almost universally better to me- but that doesn't mean I don't enjoy listening to Oasis, Blur, The Vines, Radiohead, Rammstein, and maybe even other stuff whose names escape me at the moment...

To sum modern music up in one simple word: BLLLLAAARRGGAGGAGGAGEGGER. In other words, it's all pretty much crap. Too much "I WANT TO CUT MYSELF BECAUSE LIFE SUCKS" and "YO I DUN POP A CAP IN DAT PLAYA." Are you reading my mind? Thats Exactly how I feel!

I don't blame you guys! I pretty much feel the same way about our current world of music too! Anything pretty much after 2003 sucks, with a few exceptions. Anything from the mid 1960s till about 2003 had some really fantastic music. It was during this time that we had some really great musicians and rock bands like The Beatles, Fleetwood Mac, Sting, Tina Turner, Duran Duran, and Whitney Houston to name a few. As for rap, NO WAY for me! I appear to have inherited my mom's dislike for rap, as I cannot stand a majority of it. To make matters worse, at my high school prom last year they had a TON of rap songs playing. Needless to say my date and I only danced sporadically that night as she didn't care to much for rap either.

I think music is variable. There's a lot of commercial rubbish with some excellent stuff from the likes of the Kaiser Chiefs.
But I think we're wrong to go saying, "Oh, it's the way music is these days." The fact is that you'll always have some good stuff and some terrible stuff in the charts. We remember the likes of the Beatles, Beach Boys, Rolling Stones, Kinks etc. from the '60s, but we forget that these weren't the only acts in the charts. There was plenty of junk that only music historians remember these days.
Plus we're also forgetting that "commercial" isn't exactly new. Listen to the Beatles' early stuff. There were some gems, but a lot of it is "Oh look at us we're a bunch of smiley nice boys from Liverpool who like to dance and do other non-threatening things" packaged guitar pop. It was only when they got really established that they were allowed to experiment with albums like 'Rubber Soul' and 'Revolver'.

Well, even in the beginning, the Beatles were listenable (which is more than I can say for most modern music!), and they were considered to be rebellious and cool and threatening to some people ("oh no, their hair is slightly longer than normal! scandalous!"), but this is obviously very tame by today's standards. I agree, some of their really early stuff hasn't aged very well. Only about half of the songs on their first two albums are worth listening to. Of course, after that, they became one of the greatest bands ever... Anyway, back on topic... In general, I can't stand most modern music. But there are certain songs I don't mind. I like most stuff by the Streets, a song by the Model Rockets called "The Dress-Up Girls", and the odd song by some random artist, but I dislike most of it. I find it to be very similar and repetitive, and bland.

The only adequate kinds of music I like are dance and urban. I absolutely detest any other kind of modern music, especially pop. You'd think modern artists are performing only for the money. This is especially the case for boy bands.

Quite simple... today's music is mainly crap! I'm not talking sheep dottles, here, I'm talking about big cow pats! I'm also talking about 99.9999% of the music scene. I'm fond of R.E.M. and Keane, in the "pop/rock" scene, but soundtracks and much better, I feel.
John William's "The Forest Battle - Concert Suite" from Star Wars Episode VI (Return of the Jedi)... it's just amazing!

My views: - Every artist sounds the same. - The music is generally terrible, and always the same instruments. - EVERYBODY seems to be playing it, and as a result it becomes annoying.
Give me ANYTHING from the 60s to the early 90s any damn day.

According to Tim; - Rap/Hip-Hop etc.
- Garage/Speed Garage (It's Garage, but faster! - James (Tim's classmate))
- Heavy Metal
Anything other than these music genres are considered emo music. (In case you don't know, 'emo' people are people with emotional issues. They can be either very emotional or emotionless )

What do I think of Music these days? Utter rubbish. I mean, its all about the same thing in'it? I mean its like, "I went to me offie and i got shot, I then got up, me 'and bleedin' an' blinded de man wiv me bling...". Its just rubbish. Now, this is coming from a guy who likes rock (Green Day espec.), with a mixture of R.E.M., Keane and the like. Now, not all RnB is bad, I do in fact like certain artists, but most of it is rubbish. 50-Cent (or, to quote Robbie Fowler, "Big Billie Bullocks") can't sing to save his dog. I did have the dis-pleasure to listen to "Candy Shop" and I left wondering what is so big about him. It was rubbish.
Pop is going down the gutta an' all. I mean, there was this one song "California" which lyrics were simply "California(x2) Here we come, California(x2)" repeated it seems, no sign of a verse anywhere and if there was, it must've been very short. I will not mention James Blunt either...3 words "He cannot sing". I only like one song, thats Wiseman, and thats it. He cannot simply hit the high notes at all, which are very frequent in his songs.
I don't care what stick I get for liking rock or being a "sweatie", as long as I can stay away from that rubbish...
(BTW, GLC rule clarts! ;D)

I know what you mean, Jim. It's all "Life on da streets" and "Hangin' out wit ma homies". Sheesh! I would much rather listen to the Crazy Frog than some of today's modern music. The Kaiser Chief's "Oh My God" - what da hell, man? It's the same lyrics over and over again. These guys would do far better making songs without lyrics if they think that the Golden Rule Of Music is "Just repeat the same thing over and over to take up space." Unless you do it in a good way, like Altered Images' "Happy Birthday". But then again, is that modern music? No, it's from Teh Good Old 80s. And yes Jim, GLC rule. Man.

My views: Music these days? Only a few artists I really like. I CANNOT stand rap at all. I mean, some beautiful lyrics, mind you. But the beat? Oh god! Too much added bass and drum machine. I'm mostly up for anything 60's and 70's. Not a HUGE fan on today's music.

In response to whoever mentioned James Blunt, I can only agree that his music and lyrics are crap. I'd also agree his singing can be pretty annoying to, I've read somewhere that he sings like a eunuch, and I'm inclined to agree!

I tolerate VERY LITTLE modern music. The only 'modern' stuff I listen to are Britney Spears (her first two CDs ONLY) and N'Sync. The rest of it I can't stand. Now, I'll listen to almost any soundtrack, provided that it's mostly instrumental music with very little singing. There are some rare exceptions to that rule, however. I like Disco, Oldies, good ol' Rock N' Roll, classical, and anything that centers around a piano ~Elizabeth
