What kind of music are you into the most?
Personally, I like Indie stuff along the lines of Oasis, Manic Street Preachers, Arctic Monkeys, Mark Joseph, Stereophonics and the like. It's a good thing because these types of acts are becoming more frequent and dominatory in the music charts, unlike the late 90s when Pop music was in abundance and manufactured acts were all over the place!
Modern guitar stuff really suits my mood, and I think the music scene we have at the moment is the strongest it's ever been in recent years. We have a minimal amount of cheesey pop acts to keep the kids happy, and the music scene is really being aimed more at an older market, and it appears to be working!

Heres one thing that I must say: Rap sucks. Now that I've gotten that out, I like things along the lines of techno, as well as older rock and roll, and some other stuff. Bands include: Hellogoodbye Daft Punk Oasis Metallica Iron Maiden(Cheers Festfox!) Queen The Beatles U2 Weird Al Yankovic The Beastie Boys And some 100 others

Ryan, I differ on today's music. I feel the current state of music isn't a very good one. Rap, and R&B seem to have taken over the airwaves. They are the main music played on channels such as MTV. VH1 I will admit is a bit better than MTV in the sense that they play more rock, and less of the rap and R&B music, and more of the rock scene. Though they still don't play much of certain artists. Many artists are also by and largely ingorned by the music scene here in America. Ask any person if they know who Mark Joseph, Robbie Williams, or Kaiser Chiefs are and you'd most likely get a blank responce on their faces.
Lyrical content too has taken a downfall, as more and more music seems to be heading in the direction of topics that really aren't needed. For instance, in Nelly's new song "Grills" he constantly talks about sets of covers that many rappers have on their teeth. My question who gives a darn? Most people really don't care about teeth covers. I'm also getting sick of constantly seeing women portrayed as they are now. I'm sick of seeing women constantly shaking their butts and susposedly looking sexy. It's disgusting, and not needed. We also have a lot of acts seemingly trying to make themselves look tuff, or as pimps, or as anything their not. My advice to the artists: be yourselfs, not some fabricated image.
We also have a lack of music videos by other genres on TV. For instance that main music played on VH1, and MTV is mainly rap, r&b, and some rock. We don't have many other videos from other genres played on TV. For instance groups like, The Chemical Brothers, Daft Punk, Oasis, Kylie Minogue, Danni Minogue, Moby, Robbie Williams, and more are very rarely shown on TV. I'd rather see some of their videos than most of these video I see now. What ever happened to any video that made you just go WOW! I remember when I saw the "Fell in Love with a girl" video by the White Strips, and the sheer surprise I had when I saw it. It's WOW! videos like that I'd like to see more of.
Also, I'm getting extremely sick of the invasion of reality TV and Celebrity gossip on channels. I don't personally care for reality TV too much, and celebrity gossip really isn't needed.
Finally, I'm getting annoyed by the constant commericialism in music and on TV. For example, each of the preformers at last years live eight preformance received these $5000 (or around that) gifts bags filled with goodies from various companies. What ever happened to doing an event for Charity? At the original Live Aid in 1985, those acts preformed for free, on their time, and not for any big sponsors. Why couldn't the acts 20 years later do the same?
Overall, I feel today's music scene badly needs a makeover.

Modern Music?
I think a quote from Sir Handel in Old Bean's Mountain Engines dubs comes to mind: "Rubbish, rubbish, just a lot of rubbish, rubbish!"
A lot of today's music is either a) silly, b) repetitive, c) boring, d) commercial, e) depressing or f) just no good. It seems the times of a band playing music for the music are almost gone, and that's a shame. The music from the 70s and 80s is timeless - when will anyone forget We Are the Champions? Is 'Wish You Well' by Bernard Fanning or any of the infinite blonde-doll songs by your Britney, Christina et al going to be as longlasting? I think not. And that's a big shame.

Some modern music is ok, but I consider most of it to be trash. I prefer some things from the 70's, 80's, and 90's, and early 2000.

To be honest, you make some good points there, but the UK music scene around the 1990s was absolutely dire, 1998 in particular saw what would be today's dominant bands pushed into obscurity in favour of cheesey pre-teen aimed pop-groups such as Steps, 5ive, and in the fading days of Boyzone, Westlife, who remain on a much lower key and are a housewives' favourite.
The music scene today requires bands to make good music in order to survive, that's why we've seen these pop groups battered into obscurity.
However, I will agree on the fact that the commercialism is sickening to see. Pepsi, McDonalds and other companies are using artists like Beyonce, Britney and others to tout products for them, and the modern era of Reality TV sees flash-in-the-pan acts who won't last five minutes entering the charts. Thankfully they never survive, but it does lower the tone a little!

The old Pepsi commercials used to make me sick, with that classic "bum bum bum bum bum" goodness, it would be enough to drive you crazy after a while. I remember a commercial with Paris Hilton climbing all over a car in a rather well, provacative manner to advertise for a new McDonald's sandwich, and I thought that was rather uncalled for. But getting back on topic, I think some of todays music just gives me a headache. Some of the rap artists make songs that I consider abolutely outrageous with some of the lyrics in them.

The Paris Hilton commercial was by Carl's Jr. They also made another commercial about their new milkshakes. Let's not go there. Modern music isn't great. The lyrics are terrible and vulgar. Black Eyed Peas used to be one of my favorite modern bands/groups/whatever. They made "Where is the Love", which is still one of my favorite songs. Hard to believe that they were the ones who made "My Humps". Most R&B is lousy and just about all rap is terrible. Nearly every party I go to plays rap, so that's what I dance to most of the time, unfortunantly. If you can't beat em...

At my school's homecoming dance, they mostly played hip-hop/rap music. I tell ya, rap is impossible to dance to. I've tried it and felt pretty stupid doing so.

I think you've all proved some pretty valid points guys.
Rap and R&B is becoming annoyingly commenplace in socioty. And this explains why many people (like myself) still think that the music industry thrived in the 60s, 70s and 80s. But having said that, the Indie Rock scene is also bringing this country forward with guys like Mark Joseph, Coldplay, Stereophonics, Kaiser Chiefs etc. giving the anti Rap/R&B people something with more musical quality to listen to. And one other thing is for sure. The music scene today is DEFINATELY better than the 90s. I mean, was I the only one who loathed the Spice Girls back then? And still hate what this decade of rubbish has left behind?
Speaking for myself, I mostly prefer older rock music such as Queen, T-Rex, Status Quo etc. Those were the days when rock and roll bands weren't afraid to be outragous.

To sum modern music up in one simple word: BLLLLAAARRGGAGGAGGAGEGGER.
In other words, it's all pretty much crap. Too much "I WANT TO CUT MYSELF BECAUSE LIFE SUCKS" and "YO I DUN POP A CAP IN DAT PLAYA."

I listen to some of the modern songs, and as I sit there in boredom waiting for the song to end, I think to myself: What happend to all the good music in the world? What happened to the Monkees, the Jackson 5, the Beatles, and many other older bands. They were excellent. And now most of that gets pushed aside for this modern rubbish!

Modern music is trash. Mainly because Rap is trash.
The 80s and 90s music were the best. At least they didn't have music begging for women to take their clothes off, or have sex, or I hate _____. That's basicly what modern music is now.

That's one of the major reasons why I dislike most rap songs. They say a lot of bad things about women, which is mean and wrong!!!

*Sees above posts on Hip-hop and braces himself* I gotta agree with the Hip-Hop quotes mentioned, but I got a few words to say on the matter. Hip-Hop is an expression of street life and USED to tell stories of survival, goings-on in the world, etc (some more campy than others). Now the only thing really decent about Hip-Hip/Rap is the background music. There is a heavier reference to sex, drugs, and bad things involing women that even a 'Pac/Biggie lover like me can't stand... You dig? I like some new music put out, but the situation was alot better in previous decades full of constant hits (I don't mind a little Rock N' Roll/Techno/Blues/Beatles-John Mayer what-cha-ma-call-it!). Besides, I can always go back to my Curtis Mayfield and other old school backtracks.

I agree on you with the first staement CRScott. It felt with that as a motivation, then Hip-Hop and Rap had meaning. But now, its just gibberish.

In my mind, modern music is give-and-take. I have a very high tolerance for most of it, but certain songs do tend to get repetetive after awhile (that Hey Ya song by Outkast comes to mind). I try to avoid rap as a rule, but there is a small handful that I'll listen to willingly. Nothing too shallow - if I sense a message behind it, it's worth my time.
Of course, if you tire of the modern stuff - and even if you don't - there's always Richard Cheese. (Imagine Frank Sinatra singing to Nirvana, Disturbed, Limp Bizkit, etc.)

Nothing too shallow - if I sense a message behind it, it's worth my time. Kinda the opposite for me. If I sense a message I'll turn it off. The messages in most modern songs aren't very positive, with the exception of songs like "Where is the Love?".

I love Rap/Hip Hop and just about any other type of music, Dance, Trance, Punk, Hardcore Industrial Metal, Indie, Pop, I've just opened my perspective in recent years! I seriously think that each one is good for different occasions, and rather than basing our own lives around the music, we should use the music to suit how we are at the time. Hence me having about 3 days worth on my ipod.... so far! But, I HATED 'Where is the love' it just seemed such a blatant cashing in song in times of war etc. and sooo wussy (lol) However I liked 'Get retarded' 'My Humps' and their other ones.
