Well Dylis wouldn't have been as funny for a start. I liked Alderton's voice for her and that is what I missed in the new series. The new guy can't do it as funny

The Dilys voice was definately one of Alderton's best. Such a shame he didn't return for the new series to at least provide that one voice. Speaking of which, apprently we'll be seeing the next series and all repeats of older episodes on Five soon, as they've aquired the rights. www.worldscreen.com/newscurrent.php?filename=hit102507.htmThey're doing well for themselves. First Neighbours, now Fireman Sam - whatever next?

I agree with OJ, Dylis' voice was one of the best things in the show; I still watch it now just to hear it. With the new bloke...well, it's just that, like a bloke doing a very poor impression of John Alderton without even trying to make it sound like a woman.

I thought John Sparkes only did the male voices. I think it's another actor doing the ladies. Mind, poor or not, John Sparkes was great on 'Barry Welsh Is Coming'.

Imagine if Alderton did the voice of ALL the little miss characters. That would have been very funny but it was good to see him doing something alongside Pauline Collins.

Today, for the first time in years, I have finally watched 'Snow Business'! I found it in Woolworths in a double-pack with a Christmas DVD of the new series. I must admit paying £10 for it was a bit much, but it was worth it in the end! Great moments included Elvis's attempt at cooking the turkey and Station Officer Steele shouting 'Timber' after Sam chops down the Christmas tree!
I might put it up on YouTube for those who don't have the episode, but I don't know if I will get into any bother?

I'm not sure whether I should be publicly condoning or discouraging it, but put it this way, the Norweigan version of that same episode has been on YT in complete form since February One of the best things, I think, about Snow Business is the music. It sounds like they were able to spend a bit more time/money on it than your average ep, and that all adds to the specialness of the whole thing. Trevor Evans' theme sounds even more catchy than usual and I love the theme played as the kids sledge down the hill, just prior to getting trapped on the ice.

I was going to put 'Snow Business' up, but it looks like someone got there before me! Here is the first part:

Aye, cheers for the link. Being wanting to see that one for ages. Have to agree, the possible extra time and money for the special was noticable, and nice to hear a few extra bits of music. Particularly liked the scene with the Trevor snowman, and Dilys drunk (let's see them get away with that nowadays!). Also, this special confirmed to me that Trevor Evans is the worst driver in history to not notice a snowdrift that big Didn't find it quite as emotion packed as everyone else seemed to suggest. The only real bit that got me was the last scene of Sam all alone on Christmas night, but happy all the same; a scene that was topped off by the music (the different credits were nice too), but also that, unlike the new series, shows again that Sam does have a life outside of his job.

Mind you, Dan, he may've noticed the drift if he hadn't been so busy singing 'Deck The Halls'. Never mind, he's a great character all the same.
I saw the episode for the first time myself yesterday. Like Chris, I enjoyed the rendition of Trevor Evans's theme tune, and there was plenty of action in this one. Seeing Dilys drunk and sticking up for "Mummy's little darling - (like heck!)" Norman after the rescue was a good laugh. The end credits were nice too, especially when Sam hangs up his stocking and says: "I'm getting a bit old for this now, aren't I?"
Great ep on the whole.

Looks like another for the CGI Bandwagon. I reckon that makes 4 HIT Series now. I loved the old Fireman Sam episodes the best, quite the look it had back then.

Well, once again, we oughtn't judge by how this sounds. With any luck, they might try and revert a little to the writing of the original series instead of it being "The Norman Price Show" Besides, I've learnt this company are also responsible for producing Tractor Tom and Stressed Eric according to their website. Judging by the 3D animation in Tractor Tom, the animation isn't too bad if anyone's intrested in checking them out, so it should hold up well for what's to come for Sam.

Animation looks quite good there, Chris. Seems a bit Pixar-esque to me. Let's hope that this is an improvement on the early 2000's series. That one wasn't too bad, though, but it could have been better, and less reliant on the kids.

Not entirely sure what to make of this CGI Fireman Sam. The voices are a slight improvement on the 2005 series - Sam's regained some of the charm that John Alderton gave him (and John Sparkes took away), and sounds a bit younger too into the bargain - and thankfully it's NOT the same moron on the website. However, the likes of Dylis and Norman suffer without John Alderton still...!
Also, Bella's Cafe still features in the series in the background, however, she's neither seen nor mentioned throughout the first DVD anyway as far as I'm aware.
The storylines all seem to be written by one guy - Andrew Brenner, who does a fairly decent job of the writing, but the animation is by no means a creative improvement. It's not bad by any means, but realistically, after 20 years plus of stop-motion animation, it's a bit of a comedown. You can tell it's more of a compromise than anything else on the back of budget constraints put in place by APAX (Private Equity Firm that owns HIT) to make things cheaper and more cost-effective. As a result, this just doesn't "feel" as good as the stop-motion stuff, and to be honest as well, the 2005 series wasn't all that bad and was better orchestrated than the mish-mash that went into reorganising Thomas from it's classic format to a PBS-friendly show...
In all, it's a fairly sizeable miss on the CGI animation front for Fireman Sam, and I sincerely hope that HIT will think again or look for investors to back a proper model animated series again...

Here's a rather epic video I wish I'd discovered sooner. A live performance by Maldwyn Pope of the original, full-length Fireman Sam theme!
