In this thread, you may discuss Batman. Batman came from the mind of Bob Kane, and first appeared in 1939's Detective Comics #27. My favourite incarnation is the "Dark Knight", avenging his parents and working under the cover of darkness. This is excellently portrayed in "Batman: The Animated Series" and happens to be my favourite Batman production. In terms of the movies, Tim Burton's "Batman" and "Batman Returns" were wonderful. Jerry Bruckheimer's "Batman Forever" wasn't quite as good, but "Batman & Robin" really killed the movie series off. I don't hate it with a passion like some people, but it's certainly not the best. It couldn't seem to decide whether it was a serious movie or a comedy. And if the intention was for it to be both, it just didn't quite work, in my mind. The recent "Batman Begins" is truly wonderful, and I'm hopeful the following films in the new series will be just as wonderful. And Michael Caine as Alfred, how perfect casting is that? I like "Batman: Gotham Knights" as well, but "Batman: The Animated Series" (and its movies) is my absolute favourite. "The Batman", which was recently started by WB/CN I am finding difficult to really like. To me, it's sort of a poor man's version of "Batman: The Animated Series", and in fact many people have said it would have been better to reinstate "Batman: The Animated Series" instead. As for "Batman Beyond", it's okay, and it has some interesting elements, but I didn't really like how it wasn't the real Batman. The "Return Of The Joker" movie is fab though, I really enjoy it. Very exciting and lots of nice surprises in it. The live-action '60s series successfully works as both a serious show and a parody, and it's funny too. I only have the movie and "Return To The Batcave" though. It's a shame about the whole license thing over the series being released on DVD. I do manage to catch it on Fox Classics sometimes, but it isn't aired very much (or at least in Australia), and often the times are stupid, such as 5 in the morning. Oh, and my favourite villain, like many, is the Joker. So, any other fans here?

I like Batman. Everone is obsessing over whos playing the Joker in the sequel to Batman Begins. I would like to see Mark Hammil as the joker.
Joker and Penguin were my fave villans.

Loved Batman Beyond, and TAS I ought to buy (I miss watching it sooo much!). Saw the original Batman movie and was blown away (loved the song played by Prince in the Joker scene). My brother and father went to see Begins, need to see that one soon!

That would be good. By the way, Bane is usually an awsome villan in the comics. In "Batman and Robin" he was just a stupid henchman.

Batman Begins was perhaps the best comic book movie I have ever seen. It's also probably the only comic book movie to come up with a really good reason why the superhero and supervillain should happen to show up at the same time. Not to mention the fact that, by releasing everyone from Arkham and infecting the Narrows with fear gas, they've created a potentially limitless supply of insane villains, with a perfectly legitimate explanation. Not to mention explaining how Batman managed to put his equipment together- previous Batman films tend to just assume that he already has them and avoid explaining how.
As for the Joker, Mark Hamill was excellent as the voice of the character, but I don't think he really has the physical presence. To paraphrase Carrie Fisher, "Aren't you a little short to be an unpredictable psychotic supervillain?" It's a shame, because in the vocal portrayal he perfectly captured the way the Joker should sound, capable of being charming but just as capable of turning nasty at the drop of a hat.
I'm curious as to which villains will take part in future films. I think a lot of the Batman villains wouldn't really fit in the Batman Begins universe. For instance, could you envision an essentially comic character like the Penguin or a weird mutant like Killer Croc fitting in?

I think that the Joker and Scarecrow (he was protrayed PERFECTLY!) should team up. That would be cool. I remember when they did one time. All they did was use fear gas to make the mayor of Gotham do some damaging things to the city (Not negotiate the firemen's strike, for example). Then they both got beat up and went their seperate ways. To be honest, I don't think any of Batman's villains should team up. I mean, they're all psychos who know they can't trust each other. I don't think it makes sense for them to band together when they know they're gonna be double-crossed somehow. Especially in a movie, where both villains need to be given origins, motivations etc. Which, as we've seen from previous Batman films, doesn't always happen. By the way, Bane is usually an awsome villan in the comics. In "Batman and Robin" he was just a stupid henchman. Oj, never, ever mention that film again. As far as we're concerned, it never existed, ok? As for the Joker, Mark Hamill was excellent as the voice of the character, but I don't think he really has the physical presence. To paraphrase Carrie Fisher, "Aren't you a little short to be an unpredictable psychotic supervillain?" It's a shame, because in the vocal portrayal he perfectly captured the way the Joker should sound, capable of being charming but just as capable of turning nasty at the drop of a hat. They could do what they did in Birds of Prey-have Hamill talk over another actor doing the physical actions. But as much as that may work for a minute's cameo or whatever, it wouldn't work for a feature-length film. Wonder who they'll pick? I'm curious as to which villains will take part in future films. I think a lot of the Batman villains wouldn't really fit in the Batman Begins universe. For instance, could you envision an essentially comic character like the Penguin or a weird mutant like Killer Croc fitting in? I think the Penguin could work, because he can be portrayed as cold and menacing (One James Robinson story I remember was particularly good at this). If nothing else, he can take a Kingpin or 80s/90s Lex Luthor role-Philanthropist to the public, but really a crime boss.

I like how Frank Miller portrayed the Batman in his 'Dark Knight Returns' graphic novel (@1986). A pretty dark vision of the DC Universe. www.rambles.net/miller_darkknight.htmlAnother portrayal of the character that I'm a fan of is DC's Elseworlds series. I enjoy reading about alternate history (when it's well researched!), and of this series, I'm fond of Gotham by Gaslight. www.geocities.com/SoHo/study/4273/bat_else.htmlIn many of these stories, Batman is the 'foil' to Superman's misperceived allegiance to government law and order (oftentimes a totalitarian regime).

I didn't much like the last Batman movie that they did. And i hated the George Clooney movie, Batman and Robin. After the first two, the believeability slipped drastically. The first two were excellent. If any of you visit Keswick, in Cumbria go to the Cars the Star museum and you'll see one of the actual cars from the first movie. It is a beast of a machine! ;D
There are so many comic books that you can get from Ottakers and other book shops, it's unbelieveable. I wouldn't know where to start.

I rather liked the 'Judgement on Gotham' story. It was a crossover between Judge Dredd and Batman. The characters worked really well together, because while on the surface they're both faceless law enforcers with no superpowers other than their intelligence and athleticism, in all other respects they couldn't be more different. For instance, the first time Batman shows up, Dredd runs him in for possession of concealed weaponry. Plus there's some excellent dialogue, such as Dredd's first words to Batman- "You with the ears- come here!"

Now you said that I managed to read the Batman v Predator 2 comic book. Awesome. Not only is there a lethal alien out to get Batman but also he has a price tag on his head and that the top assasins from several countries are after the top money prize. Comic book action at its best. I've ordered a copy of Judgement Day in Gotham as my local bookshop didn't have in stock. Another story I read several years ago was the death of Robin. That was good and the Death of Batman. I'm looking forward to the next movie and I did like how they explained to the viewers how he managed to accumilate his equipment.

The only version of Batman I'm too interested in is the 60's campy version. It was very funny, I bought the movie and would buy the series if it were released on DVD (I really hope they clear up the licensing issues ). By the way, while we're talking about villains getting together, in the 60's movie, the Joker, the Riddler, Catwoman and the Penguin all team up. They spend most of their time bickering amongst themselves though, lol. EDIT: And of course I also loved Batman Begins, it was incredible. Can't wait for the sequel, although I really hope they don't call it "Batman Begins 2".

I've just found out there was going to be a follow up to "Batman and Robin" with George Clooney, Chirs O'Donnel and Alicia Silverstone respiring their roles and the same director as well but it got cancelled for obvious reasons. Scarecrow and Harley Quinn were going to be the villans. But I say Batman Begins was a way better idea then a follow up to a box office flop and Harley Quinn has an oportunity to appear in the sequel to Batman Begins.

*Blows dust of thread, starts choking* Anyhoo, I really always have been somewhat of a Batman fan. Batman-the Animated Series is definitely my favourite cartoon of all time, partly because all the voices were perfect. Kevin Conroy really captures batman's serious nature, and Mark Hamill is just incredible as the Joker. I liked how they changed Mr. Freeze from a campy, gimmicked villain, to sympathetic character, who's not really a bad guy, he just wants his wife back. I don't care much for the Tim Burton movies, mainly because they make Batman out to be a killer, which goes against the vow he made. Also, in "Batman Begins" not once did Ras Al Ghul call Batman "Detective". I don't hate them though, I'll watch them given the chance. The 60's series however if a different story...I find it unintentionally hilarious, and watch it whenever I can. The movie with the dehydration machine is on my 10 funniest movies of all time, especially with the "Robin!...Hand me down...the Shark...Repellent Bat-spray!!" Also, I loved Adam West's over the top acting, and how how pauses between words. If anyone can fill me in, I remember there being one episode where some guy fills a room with balloons or something, and Batman says:"Robin...get...pins...from...utility belts!...."

Well, they knew the show was corny when they made it. They purposely did it so it worked on two levels, as an over-the-top satire for adults and as a "thrilling" adventure show for the kids. I suggest avoiding most of the third season though-- not only did they introduce Batgirl, who basically took over Robin's role, save for the occasional "Holy ____" or some other minor line, but they also significantly lowered the budget, resulting in even worse effects, and unbelievably bad cardboard backdrops. Sometimes they wouldn't even have a backdrop, they'd just arrange the set furniture in a big circle and turn off the lights behind the actors!! By this time, the writing wasn't as clever, either. The first season was definitely the best and funniest, although all three are pretty enjoyable, I suppose. The fourth season would've been terrible, had they not cancelled it though-- to cut costs even more, the producers planned to drop Robin altogether.

I haven't seen a 60's Batman for ages. There aren't much episodes on Youtube. I remember Burce Lee and Vincent Price had guest roles. Price played a villan called Egghead (who appeared occasionaly now he doesn't appear much in the Batman universe) another reoccuring villan in the 60's was King Tut. He also doesn't appear.
The animated series was great. It even introduced Nightwing at some point.
