Sudriana is a space station launched from SiF City late 2057, dedicated to exploring the galaxy and possibly finding new life beyond the walls of the Earth. For many years, Sudriana traveled, encountering several new species and making first contact. However, many of the crew of Sudriana got bored with this life, and begin a rebellion. The Commodore of the station, Royston Hughes, tries to keep the peace, but too often is simply a figurehead for the chaos rapidly spreading throughout the ship. In this RPG you can take the place of one of the rebels, the peacekeepers, or possibly one of the new lifeforms that Sudriana has encountered if you are that way inclined. Royston Hughes is a NPC, meaning he can be played by anyone at any time. He is not a strong-willed man, but is content to make an effort, despite its obvious futility. Can I get some takers for the crew of Sudriana and chronicle their adventures in the great darkness?

Cool, thanks guys. Just a few quick notes: - Can you give a full bio of your characters - name, rank, personality etc - In response to LordViruscide, yes the Sudriana does carry both handheld weapons and small craft which can take off and fly outside the Station. These craft (called 'skippers') are armed with low power, high frequency lasers that are prone to running out of power at the most inopportune times. - Sudriana itself is armed to the teeth with powerful weapons, bombs etc. Unfortunately it has the turning circle of a pregnant whale (for those who don't like comparisons, it handles like crap) while the skippers are quick and agile to make up for their lack of consistent firepower.
I'll be playing Commander Tom Stark. Headstrong, decisive and adept at handling both skipper and handheld weapon, he is the leader of the rebels, who quite frequently takes his favourite skipper (which he calls Arlyria) out for a run around the asteroid belt. He does have a grudging loyalty towards the Sudriana and Commodore Hughes, and will help if necessary. However what he sees as necessary differs greatly from Hughes and the serving loyalists. For example, some months back the Sudriana was listing heavily, two engines on the port side had died. Rather than use his piloting skills to right the ship or help repair the engines, Commander Stark went on one of his asteroid jaunts for a week. Commodore Hughes was not best pleased, and is aiming to take Stark down for this incident in particular, never mind everything else over the last few years.

Despite the fact I have never participated in an RPG (I believe role-playing game) before, this seems most interesting. I can be rather good with Sci-Fi, and I'm a keen writer. I have a project that I write off-island that's like a mystery, action themed series. It's just the RPG bit I'm not 100% sure about. Would it be possible to list the available ranks and roles available to members to undertake? Tactics officer is always pretty cool, so if I may have bagsy on that position. As for rank I'm not sure. Colonel, possibly? [Always sounds good] If not, as I think that's a pretty high rank, then Lieutenant doesn't seem that bad. So then, bio... Name: Colonel Edward Great [oh the wit], as said previously if not Colonel then Lieutenant. Role: He is one of the loyalist peacekeepers. Chief tactics officer on the SSS. Personality: He is a man of few words, but when it comes round to being his shining time, he is ready and willing to go all guns blazing into action, and often has a good plan in mind in the most challenging of situations! He can't resist an adventure, and likes to think of himself as a clever and more mysterious person. What he lacks sometimes in social skills, he makes up for intellect. He takes following rules rather seriously, and knows the rulebook off by heart, something which others may often find amusing at times. He can be rather a good leader and good advice giver. He values friendship, and believes the phrase 'Every man for himself' should never be uttered in any situation. Favoured weapon: Handgun anyday. None of this lazer nonsense, Edward believes bullets are much more reliable! He also likes gadgets, but nothing too fancy. Just some good old reliable technology from the 2040s. History: Recommended by SiF HQ. He doesn't often speak about his past... Physical traits: Hair is spiked at the front. He wears glasses and often has a serious expression. When not in uniform (if we have one), or off-duty, he usually sports a smart, long brown jacket. Just to wrap up, then could you detail the part that members themselves will be asked to play in this project. Nicholas.

RPG = Role Playing Game, bingo. Check out the Heroes Of Lacoss thread also in the Games board for an example. ( Linky Linky) It's more a collaborative story with everyone having their own specific characters to write about. In response to question 1, the available ranks etc are whatever you want to be. Sudriana has to be a bloody big ship, what with the multitude of skippers, necessity to stay in the great darkness (as the Sudriana crew, oddly, call space) for long periods of time. So logically there is a large crew of Commodore, Commander, Captain, Private, Sargeant, whatever Question 2 - Well, that depends on the characters people choose to play. It's probably not going to be anything too out of the ordinary, just your standard inter-space station warring, occasional encounters with aliens, battles to the death with Royston Hughes' father... oops, I spoilt the ending. It's a 'make it up as we go along' thing. PS - I love how guns, lasers and everything are OK, but a flamethrower is dangerous. PPS - Come on, I want some rebels to join Commander Stark, we can't all be goody-goodys! *petulant*

Just one flaw there - Captain-Major isn't really the rank a Security Officer would get. Captain-Major and head of Security Department could work, though. Anyway, methinks there's enough people now to get a start on the story, so without further ado, let's do! ;D
Commander Tom Stark scanned the sky. The Great Darkness, he thought, so beautiful and yet so dangerous. It was getting late on the ship, he knew. At least 10pm on the bridge, which would have meant it was midnight elsewhere. Not that time meant anything out in the great darkness, away from the sun's warming and brightening rays. Nonetheless, he turned his skipper around and headed back to the station. As he approached, Stark's radio crackled into life. "Name, vessel and clearance code.""Oh, come on, you know it's me!" "Name, vessel and clearance code.""Look, it's Stark. You know that." "Name, vessel and clearance code.""OK, fine, you win. Commander Tom Stark, aboard a station skipper, name of Arlyria. Clearance Code TSK56812." The hatch opened, and Stark maneuvered the skipper inside before landing deftly on the tarmac. Sliding out the skipper's exit, he strode briskly across to the hangar door, where he saw Captain Major Wittmann staring intently at him. "What's up, Mick?" CM Wittmann stiffened. "Don't call me Mick." "Come on, you knew full well it was me coming in and you still request a clearance code and everything. Cut me some slack." "Hey, I've got a job to do here. In charge of security, remember? And who's to say you hadn't been killed and some bally alien had commandeered your skipper? Huh?" "You name one species which has been hostile towards us." "You mean today?" "Forget it." Stark shook his head, and walked away, leaving Wittmann rolling his eyes in distaste. Tom walked back to the barracks he shared with two others. They weren't there, which he was thankful for. A short kip would do him nicely, and he found it hard to sleep whilst other people were in the room and / or being noisy. He had barely pulled on a leg of his ship-issue warmsuit when an alarm started blaring loudly. "Great..." he muttered, and shut the door.

Although I've never done anything like this before I'll throw my hat into the ring:
Species: Alien
Name: (Native) - Unspeakable to human tongue. Goes by name John Doe for ease
Home Planet: Not yet revealed...
Description: Shape-shifter allowed through rearranging its' molecular structure. In standard state it is a large (5'5'' to the shoulder) hexapedal (6-legged) creature with reddish coloured skin, dog-like head and extremely sharp claws. Is capable of standing upright and using both fore- and mid-legs as "arms". Speaks telepathically.
Association: Unknown. Associates with both Rebels and Peacekeepers freely
Personality: Largely unemotional, speaking in montones in most instances. However, when angered will fly into a rage and harm anything in his path. Despises alarms, and is known to seek out alarm systems and destory them if they have been activated. Is very secretive, and reveals very little about his race or home planet
Weapons: N/A

Meanwhile, Lt. Kitagawa was busy in the Hangar bay. All 20 Reapers were lined up nicely as he inspected them.
"Routine Flyby, nothing fancy. Scanners showed us somethng was out there and we don't know what. I'll be in the Inferno leading the first wing. Commander Stark is expecting results..."

"The Great Darkness, I wonder where earth is?" Captain Major Wittmann mused aloud, "UP AND TO THE LEFT" shouted a passing worker "Hush you!" he said with a glare.
Unslinging his Rifle he continued down the hall until suddenly the alarm started, "why is it always me?" stopping only to check if there was a bullet in the chamber.....

Stark rolled over and tried to sleep. Then he sat up. Lay down again. closed his eyes, pillow over the ears. Nothing would block out that infernal ringing. Still he did nothing. A face appeared in the doorway. Tom recognised it as Robert Acton, a fellow asteroid skipper, as he had come to call himself. He nodded to Acton, then turned away. Acton wasn't in the mood to give up easily, though. "Stark!" "Mph?" "Bit of noise going on at the moment, hey?" "Yeah, and?" "Want to get in on the fun?" "Nah, not in the mood Bob." "You sure? Apparently there's a full fleet of ships approaching us from starboard." "You WHAT?" "I know, hey? Wittmann's rallying the troops or somethin', I don't really know. Should be a good show anyway. You in?" "I thought Mick was still on dock duty?" "Nah, he left just after you dropped in. So, you gonna come or not?" "I think I'll sit this one out, Bob. I need sleep." "Suit yourself, Tom." With that, Acton closed the door and went to see what was happening. Tom closed his eyes and tried for sleep again. Wittmann dashed down the corridor. "Dammit, only three bullets..." he muttered to himself. Eventually he made it to the bridge. "Commodore!" "Captain Major," Hughes said simply, returning the salute. "What do we have?" "We're not sure yet..." Hughes said slowly. "A couple of unidentified craft off the starboard bow, but they haven't made any radio contact. We've tried all the standard greetings on every known frequency, so I'm not sure why they haven't responded." "I see," Wittmann said. He watched as the two vessels glided softly through the great darkness. Lt. Kitagawa gave everything one last check. "OK, good to go." Together, 20 Reapers marched into skippers, 4 to a craft, and took off through the dock. "KITAGAWA!" Takeshi cursed. Turning around, he saw Commander Stark walking towards him. "What are you doing?" "Hm? Oh, just getting the Reapers to check out those weird craft." "And...?" "No and. We'll get back to you soon." "OK, good. Now, Takeshi, you know that I know what those craft are and what they are doing there. I don't want this to take any longer than about 2 hours in total, understood?" "Yes, but..." "Good. Report back to me within the day. You know what I want to hear." Stark moved away. Lt. Kitagawa watched him go, chewing his lip. You do one favour in your career and you're marked for life..., he thought to himself.
If I'm being too liberal with your characters, let me know. I just want to make sure I'm characterising everyone properly. Also, could you possibly make your posts a bit longer, give a bit more story as to what is going on, rather than just walking down the hall or whatever? Makes it a bit more interesting for everyone.

Back on the bridge, Lieutenant Great was at his post in tactical.
"It's routine procedure to activate all defense systems and charge the station's weapons. Do you wish me to proceed, Commadore?" asked Edward. "Go ahead," replied Hughes. "Wait, there's something coming through. Audio only, and all frequencies," reported Edward urgently. "Let's hear it Lieutenant. I think we should hear what they have to say," said Witteman.

"Sir.. something's not right" Wittmann said a worried frown appearing on his face " I think in my Rank of security officer, we should go to high alert"
"right.. this mind forgets, where are the weapons kept" stated Hughes in a calm voice, a counter point to Wittmann's nervous one
Wittmann started off "The hand-held weapons I.E pistols are kept closer to the boarding points, as one moves into the ship heavier weapons I.E rifles and lasers are available, this is to stop invaders from gaining access to the weapons we keep for security purposes." Wittmann paused to draw breath "The very heaviest are kept right here for a final defense"
"Heavy weapons?" piped up Lieutenant Great
"One portable Ion Cannon is kept here on the bridge with ten power-cells of ammo"
"Oh yes... Bessy we call it" smiled Hughes
"The real problem is that most of the crew are better armed than the ship own weapon lockers combined" trailed off Wittmann....

In the launch bay, the 5 skippers were ready. Takeshi turned away from Stark with a blank face. "Everything OK, sir," asked one of the Reapers clambering into one of skippers at the back of the away team. "Fine, Ensign," replied Takeshi. He walked towards the lead skipper, ready to jump in himself. "Alright," yelled Takesh. "Let's power up, and find out what's going on here!" Takeshi glanced back. Stark had gone. Where to he did not know. On the bridge Wittman had pulled Bessy out her concealed compartment between the command seats. "Hello, old friend," he said with a grin. "Let's not get too trigger happy," said the Commadore raising an eyebrow. "Same goes for you, Lieutenant," he called looking over his shoulder at Great over by the Tactical station. "Wouldn't think of it, Sir," said Great. He smiled slightly, but then remembered he was on duty, and tried to compose himself to a more serious expression. "Alright," said Commandor Hughes. "Let's hear that communication, Lieutenant!" "Opening the channel," reported Great. He pressed a couple of buttons on the console in front of him. They were greeted with the most hideously high-pitched screeching noise. "What is that," cried a man over at the helm. "I don't know, it's like feedback. Maybe an override command being sent to the SSS!" Hughes spun round. "Shut it off," he commanded to Great. "I'm trying. Controls aren't responding," he observed. There was a shuddered that was felt right across the bridge. "We've stopped dead," announced the helmsman. "Power's going down. Everything. Lights, ship's weapons, launch control..." Great was suddenly interrupted as the lights on the bridge went out, as well as most of the lights on the many consoles and stations around the bridge. "We've gone into grey mode!" yelled Great. Grey mode is what happens after 2300 hours. This is to signify night time, and to help reserve power on the SSS. In crew quarters, of course, grey mode settings can be altered to personal preference. Many system run on auto, and the night crew officers, a job disliked by many that rotates weekly, ensure that nothing goes wrong while the majority of the crew is sleeping. "Back-up power?" suggested Wittman. "I'm on it," said Great. The bridge was once again flooded with lights. "I've only got half of the systems operation, but we have life support. No need to hold your breath!" "That's a relief," chuckled Wittman. "Have we been boarded?" asked a man over at the Operations station. "I cannot be sure. Both internal and external sensors are down," Great responded. There was a clunking noise that surrounded the bridge. "Oh great! Not a reference to myself of course, but that noise, in case you didn't hear, was the not-so-great noise of the blast doors sealing. They get activated automatically in situations like this. They've come down across the station. Crewmen are sealed into the quarters, etc, etc. I've got to try and release them." The alarm went off to signify the blast doors had been sealed, and that most power had been lost. "John Doe won't be liking this," chuckled Wittman. "Neither am I," sighed Hughes. Takeshi was still in launch bay 1. It is the main launch bay, containing the most skippers, but there are a few launch bays around the SSS. "The blast doors have come down," cried a Reaper. "What! Oh, dammit!" Takeshi grumbled. The launch bay turned grey. "Must be grey mode. Don't worry, I'll get these bay doors open and we'll still fly out of here. I just gotta find the controls, and find the right wires. Bit like hot-wiring a command yatch, really. Not that... I've ever done that...". Takeshi jumped down from the skipper he had been climbing into and ran over to the control panel. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- [Out of character] I made a list of roles that members could undertake across the ship. Sorta based on Star Trek as a template. I've tried remembering as much as I can. but it's been a while since I saw much of it... Command [taken already] - in charge Security [Head of Security already taken] - more combat and stuff Tactical [that's me, so Chief of Tactics already taken] - in control, of ships weapons and battle strategies Science - evidence through observation of any unusal phenomenon and lifeforms, etc. Engineering - keep the ship running smootly, main source of power Medical - doctors, etc Helmsman - driver of the craft Other roles may be available across the SSS, but just a few suggestions
