Do you know what grinds my gears? General Education requirements in college. I spent twelve years taking "general education" classes, and I learned enough about what I want to do in High School. So I know what I want to do, but why do I need to take science classes when I'm not going to use the information again? I mean, I think astronomy is interesting, but I don't see the point of taking a class if I'm not going to become an astronomer in the first place. To make matters worse, Science classes have historically been my lowest marks, and this is coming from a guy who made the Dean's list first year. Oh wait, it's so I can become "well rounded"...the way some of my professors make it sound, it's like I'll get turned down a job in the media because I don't know Euler circuits. I highly doubt that employers hand out pop quizzes that determine whether you are hired or not. If I want to be "well-rounded" wouldnt I want to become well versed in my field of study and not a bunch of classes that really don't matter? Maybe I'm missing something, but that's what grinds my gears.

Do you know what really grinds my gears, aside from the obvious? When your friends with somebody, who maybe changes their relationship status every few months or so, who are seemingly seeing the same person year and year out, and how if you believe that friend of yours is single - the person their supposedly 'seeing' doesn't like it if you get kind of flirty with them but can't say it for themselves "Don't do this, don't do that!" but have to get the friend that you fancy to do it.
Seriously I don't like people who can be very controlling of others, just so that they can get their own way instead of letting the people their 'dating' choose for themselves. After all... life is too short for someone else to control for it with all the "Don't do this, don't do that" childish crap. That is the current thing that is grinding my gears at present because its always the sweet and innocent that are caught up in some psycho's fantasy (not to mention that it can ruin peoples lives and lose them friends when they may need them most in any given situation).
EDIT:
Another thing that really grinds my gears? Is when your computer constantly moans when your 'Virtual Memory' is too low, you move and delete stuff to free space, and then is goes off complaining again like a grumbling passenger. Half time its because the Anti-Virus as an Off-Day and causes further issues. Its like half the time you just can't win, plus some things you try to delete - even when there's absolutely nothing in a file, it can't delete because somebody or something is supposedly "using" the file that's empty. Pretty pointless there when you don't get the Trophy from Alexander Armstrong & Richard Osman.

Do you know what really grinds my gears? Twitter... or twatter. 140 characters of people sputtering obscenities and stupidity. People are just rude on there. Its just a space to rant to the two people following you like they give a crap about how much you hate your cellular carrier or how much you think your life sucks. Or for @ing washed up celebrities like Scott Stapp to tell them god is testing him (Cuz god is the IRS and LSD). I hate all these stupid teenagers on there who look younger than my little brother and thing they are some kind of adult paying for the services their parents pay for. -shifts into damn 'You damn kids get off my lawn!' mode- I remember when teenagers used to hang at the mall, pretend they got the social satire in South Park, and atleast wasted their lives playing video games instead on on 140 characters.

Do you know what really grinds my gears? A good half of 'Thomas fans' on YouTube. I used to love perusing YouTube with random Thomas videos, back before these guys came along. And I'm not talking about the ones who say 'Oh S18 no good to much fan service' (that's a story for another day). I'm talking about those who just use Trackmaster, Trainz, shoddy MS Paint drawn trains or just pictures or footage of the characters, alongside some audio from a show that's rubbish or has been done to death, horribly edited in some form of... hmmm, what might they call them... masterpieces? And yet, some of these users have thousands of subscribers on their YouTube channels & viewers are giving some of these videos hundreds of thousands (even millions) of views & saying that these videos are good. Do they not have an understanding of the word 'Good'? And you know what this leads too? They make more & more & more until they say they're making a movie & their viewers & subscribers say "Oooo it will be the best thing eva!" NO IT WON'T BE YOU UTTER GOITS! In conclusion... Do not pay any attention to any of those users. View & subscribe those who put their heart, soul and all their time & effort into making a fantastic video with fantastic high quality visuals, brilliant use of models (even if they are toys rather than models), fantastic voice-acting, custom-made music & wonderful jokes that people will actually find funny. And that is what really grinds my gears. Back to you Tom...

And that is what really grinds my gears. Back to you Tom... Lots of those sorts of videos get on my nerves! You get the videos that try to cross Thomas with Veggietales or something similar, or ship engines with ponies. Why? I can somewhat understand crossing Thomas over with something like Ivor the Engine or even Chuggington, as they share a common concept but execute it differently to one another, and so the two casts meeting one another could make for interesting ideas. But Veggietales? My Little Pony? What does Thomas have in common with either of those shows? How can a crossover between Thomas and Veggietales/MLP or similar result in anything other than a giant mess? Then you get the videos which try and put Thomas into a sitcom format but end up stealing all of the jokes from other sources (mostly SpongeBob) rather than actually taking the time to come up with their own. They'll film it with their Trackmaster/Wooden/Bachmann engines and edit the facial expressions poorly in MSPaint (No, SuperThomasLover900000, plastering an ellipse over Henry's mouth does not automatically give him a surprised expression). Many of this sort of video are (or at least were) popular not only to watch, but to make, so YouTube was eventually cluttered up with the things. Don't get me wrong, there's no shortage of good Thomas fan series on YouTube and elsewhere, and I'd say these days the standard for such things is higher than ever. Whether it be Enterprising engines, Sodor: The Modern Years or otherwise.

This has been something that has annoyed me for many years now and each time I see a case like this it really makes me angry. People who decide that they no longer have an interest in Thomas & Friends but feel the need to be an obnoxious jerk to those who are still interested in the brand as a whole. I really don't get why these people still keep accounts open on YouTube, Twitter and deviantART if they are well known for Thomas & Friends content in the first place if they aren't going to be making any content from then on, common scene would tell them to axe all connections to the fan communities altogether. I don't hold it against a person for moving on from the interest as we all have moved on from something at one stage in our lives but for them to be quite rude to people who only really know of that person for their Thomas themed fan productions isn't justified at all.

As soon as I read this, I immediately thought "TerboJUSA". You've got to love how he's allegedly lost interest in Thomas and still gets pissy if people prefer Michael Angelis to any of the American narrators. The sad thing is that his responses to people calling him out have only gotten less and less civil as time has passed. He pulls all the classic "dipshit on the internet" tropes. When people call him out for stating his opinions as fact he comes out with the old "Oh, I see I'm not entitled to an opinion/free speech!". He thinks that everyone is an idiot except for him, he uses the excuse "You're moaning about an (X)-year-old video" despite stating that his feelings towards Thomas fans hasn't changed since then, and he adheres by the good old fashioned "people with autism are subhuman morons who worship kids shows" mentality. He deserves a clip round the ear but he and thousands of other people with the same attitude are lost causes sadly.

There are people like that in every forum and every fandom. Trolls, annoying fanboys, attention hounds who rile up others, and people who think they are internet badbutts. When your hanging out on here its easy to forget because IIRC membership is based on approval and people who don't need to be here aren't here. I've heard people say the staff here are to rigid but they do a great job keeping this a comfortable place. I don't really associate with the fanbase outside of SiF so I don't really deal with any of that other than memories of when said member was here. Really I don't deal with fanbases outside of forums and conventions.
On theforce.net's forum when The Clone Wars were airing there was always a group of about 10 members who seemed like they existed to do nothing but bash everything about it, to demonize Dave Filoni as the destroyers or their childhood, and 75% of their posts remarked about Filoni's obsession the character Ahsoka Tano no matter how off topic it was. Now I don't mind at all when people disagree with me. Everybody is entitled to their own opinion. I enjoy a good debate actually but there is a line between that and what is annoying. For example going into a Narrators Discussion just to bash one narrator which is sure to start a circle jerk or into the Star Wars Television section just to bash The Clone Wars is like going onto a Nickelback forum just to bash Nickelback. I don't like Nickelback but that isn't cool.
Even with something as silly as South Park. There are people who say South Park hasn't been funny since the episode Kenny Dies which is a season 5 episode and hang around the South Park Studios forums just to let everyone know nothing is funny anymore. Season 18 just aired in the fall. That's alot of years to still be watching a silly show you don't enjoy anymore. That's probably why I don't get involved with very many forums relating to TV shows and movies because half the time they tick me off or don't give me the discussions I was looking for. Then again even railroad preservation forums have folks who say stuff I think is just to start circle jerks. Why else would someone say every steam locomotive not currently operating or in a museum should just be scrapped because there is no room for any of them if railfans actually fulfill their dreams of fixing up the engine sitting in the local park?
The trick is to learn to recognize this and learn to recognized flamebaiting toward yourself or another user and when to pull yourself back from getting drawn into anything.

We have a great membership, and you guys maintain the standard. We wouldn't have lasted 12 years without the type of people who use this forum. I won't deny that we can be rigid, but only when we need to be.

I'm still a computer geek. Using CMS and building websites, playing with Linux, and over clocking my computer are all hobbies I enjoy.
Something that really grinds my gears is a company or project, not really sure which it counts as, going for profit and leaving their old open source community to burn. This is my experience over the last week with Vanilla Forums which used to be fairly basic and easy forum software optimized for blogs that bridges perfectly with Buddypress. It effectively replaces the comment system in a blog. There is a real advantage in replacing the comment system in a blog with forum software simply for the control it gives over comments, search engine optimization, and anti spam reasons alone. Spam is a never ending battle with Wordpress, Drupal, Joomla, Xmod, Silverstripe you name it.
Unfortunately it seems like the folks behind Vanilla are more interested in going the hosted route and charging a premium for it ($200usd? What the hell man? Its $150 for a darn XenForo or IBP licence and your charging this for a glorified question and answers system?). Its been a good while since I've used Vanilla for a project since my last projects required something more stand alone. But this doesn't need anything but a glorified comment system and doesn't need that much.
On install I was surprised and even impressed by how much stuff had been added to make it closer to XenForo or Proboards like this but that fell apart. There are numerous key features missing which is to be expected with this software but the support community wasn't there anymore to fill it in or answer any questions since I'm not using the premium hosted forum. Many of the 'approved' plugins for the open source version have not been updated in a year or more while the software itself has continued to be updated which meant the few I needed like most notably the BBCode Parcer didn't work without alot of muddling or caused instability. I tossed in the towel after messing with the BBCode Parser plugin and finding out they purposely removed the ability to recognize half the BBCode out their for quotes. Maybe a smarter person could have gotten it working.
This reminds me of my experiences with the Linux Community way back when Red Hat went enterprise. Ofcourse the answer was to switch to Fedora but early on Fedora wasn't something you installed unless you wanted a crash course in how to use Linux through a broken command line. I can say the same things about SuSe.
This probably hits closer to home with antivirus solutions like Panda which was once good free software and is now premium stuff that doesn't come close to Avira AntiVir Personal and Adware which now nobody wants on a computer. Fortunately open source is a never ending hippy movement and there are always alternatives.

Hello again guys,
I may have posted more than a few times in this thread, but I felt I needed to bring this up... The ungrateful g*ts of the fan-base. So we all know that Thomas the tank engine has changed for the better, thanks to Andrew Brenner and his top team of writers Thomas has soared his way through the 18th series with cheers coming from both the young and old fan-base alike. But there is one section of the fan-base that just has to complain about little things. One example is that they keep introducing new characters. Now I'm not an expert when it comes to creating children's shows, but I have worked in a place where the company has had to try and get as much money as possible in order to survive, so selling new toys makes a lot of sense from their standpoint. However, I keep coming across some little (Ahem) who still doesn't stop complaining about the new characters. I just don't get it. Things in the series are just going so great! However, they decide to just cling onto the minority of bad things that can't be whooshed away, and just complain and complain about them. However, this last uproar that I've seen is the very... Final... Straw. The Adventure Begins was most likely one of the best specials to ever star the little blue E2, but with all the RWS references, all the nostalgia, all the original themes even the fact that the entire movie was based off a railway series book... SOMEHOW didn't distract the grumble party from complaining that Henry wasn't in his old shape. ARE YOU SERIOUS?!?! The writing team has worked tirelessly day and (Sometimes) night to get the best ever Thomas special for the 70th anniversary of the RWS. There are no new characters (Minus Glynn) the engines are in their original liveries and the entire special is based on the book written by the man himself Rev W Awdry. But the one thing that these guys decide to discuss is how ONE of the MINOR characters had a different shaped FIREBOX??? So in truth, that's what really grinds my gears, is people who are totally ungrateful for all the changes made for the series to be closer to the RWS this far. Next thing you know, when the Arlesdale engines return, they'll be saying how their wagons don't have the name "Arlesdale" on them... It's pathetic.

Do you know what really grinds my gears? Those stupid Coca-cola freestyle machines! Not only do the fast food joints have them but Wawa has put them in. I hate them because I never quite get what I select. I particularly like getting Minute Made Light flavors from the freestyle machines but most of the time if they aren't out of what I want I get the wrong flavor anyways. If I just want a regular Coke or Sprite it will come out tasting like cherry or vanilla. Its so annoying. Whats worse is it is so much harder to fill a drink to the brim to get every last penny worth because the machine will go back to the main screen if I leave it be for a few seconds. Worse the button seems to jam easy and then I'm the moron who overflows my cup. I just want ordinary drink fountains back in more places. First world problems!

You know what really grinds my gears? Trying to buy classical music. I've recently realised that, outside of film, TV and video game soundtracks, I have virtually no orchestral music in my collection. Now I love music and studied it right the way through high school, but I admit I've always been a bit intimidated trying to get into classical music proper outside of excerpts and extracts. That's for a number of reasons; the excessive length of the works which challenges my short attention span, the complexity of the arrangements which can be tricky to get a foothold on and most of all, the culture of exclusion and elitism which emphasises intensive study and appreciation of the music theory being employed over, y'know, love of the actual music being played. But that's a grumble for another day. So I'm thinking it's time I stopped worrying myself over nothing and just bought some nice classical tunes. Vivaldi's The Four Seasons. Holst's The Planets. A little Beethoven. The real basics, you know. So I've been browsing online, popping in the shops and scouring the local library to see what I should pick up. And it's a nightmare. Let me put it like this; buying classical music is like trying to buy Beatles music when the only albums commercially available to you are cover versions by 20+ different bands and performers. It's the same tunes, sure, but how in the name of Puccini's pantaloons am I supposed to know which performance is the "best" or most "definitive" or closest to the composer's original intent? Come to think of it, if it's the same tunes anyway, why does there even need to be 20+ different recorded version to begin with? Economy 101, chaps - don't flood the market. So yeah, not only am I stuck figuring out which classical music I should buy, now I'm stuck figuring out which particular rendition of which classical music to buy. And that's what really grinds my gears. ...Also, I realise 'classical' only refers to a few decades of music rather than the entirety of orchestral output pre-1900 and saying that is like calling the Monster "Frankenstein". That really grinds my gears too.

Do you know what really grinds my gears?
Coming into work in the morning, going through the answer phone messages and finding someone's left me a really nice long one, rambling on unnecessarily. Maybe racking up to a minute or more now. Ooh, no, two minutes, even! I'm sitting there, pen at the ready. All I really need is your contact telephone number. Ah, here we go... "Okay, so, if you could give me a call back on *at break-neck speed*07-eb-ebdeb-uhfubuwln-sebenineotuh. kthnxbai!" Which means listening through the whole message every attempt I make to try to decipher their phone number.
***
Another thing that grinds my gears is people that overuse 'but I digress', particularly online. I've heard very few instances of people using this term day-to-day, just during a conversation. It almost has an air of pompousness about it that almost sounds like people congratulating themselves for being so knowledgeable as to a particular topic as to go far off on a tangent, deviating from their original point, because they've gone so expansively in-depth, almost suspiciously intentionally just so that they can get on their soap-box or show off. Maybe it's just because I find it's a term that's become over-used by internet users at younger end of the teen spectrum.

You know what really grinds my gears? The word sick being used as a synonym for cool. Where the f**k did that come from? Also, why do we have so many words for vomit? Vomit and throw up should be enough. I can't use the words blow and chunks anymore. Puke is just an unpleasant word. Poor Yaks, what did they do to deserve having their name become a synonym of vomit?
