A Smooth Ride - Despite the obvious differences in his character, the story was a neat way to reintroduce our forgotten friend. Thank god Sir Handel in Charge wasn't his re-debut episode. That one was way too repetitive.
Thomas's Day Off vs. Thomas & The Treasure

Thomas and the Treasure. Despite its unrealistic nature, I could tell this was a step up in the writing where it became more "advanced" than how Thomas was in Series 8. Salty's clues to find the treasure were very clever and even the word "Maritime" is a new word for children to learn. It's Good To Be Gordon Vs. Gordon & the Engineer

I haven't seen 'Gordon and the Engineer', so I'm going for 'It's Good To Be Gordon'. So it's a little unrealistic in places, but if you pretend that the railway was using a new sort of coal (as was in the case in 'Out of Puff') and ignore the lack of the crew, this makes quite a good story, in its own way. I wouldn't go as far as to rate it in my top 10, but it was good enough for me.

Scaredy Engines vs. Halloween

Scaredy Engines, definately. Thomas is his cheeky, arrogant self once again, Duck for once isn't portrayed as a weakling, and Percy gets a good revenge on Thomas. Edward's story and the scenes at the Smelter's were spooky. A nice round of humour too.
Percy: I hope he hurries up, I wouldn't want him to be late for the fireworks.
(Thomas speeds through)
Thomas: He's after meeeeeee! Duck: I don't think he'll be late.
Nice one!

Thomas And The Missing Christmas Tree. The rescue scenes were more interesting and had a bit more action to them, whereas Christmas Party seems a bit tame. And I love the badly disguised Fat Controller at the end as Father Christmas! Percy And The Magic Carpet vs Percy's Big Mistake

Percy And The Magic Carpet. It was alot more interesting. Plus it was good to see Murdoch again.

Troublesome Trucks. I admire the camera shots when James is tackling Gordon's Hill and it had some impressive music to go with his determination. Best rendition of James' theme throughout Series 1 Skarloey The Brave Vs. Skarloey Storms Through

Haven't seen 'Skarloey Storms Through', so I'm going for 'Skarloey the Brave'. Yes, it's out of character, but if you imagine it takes place in Skarloey and Rheneas's younger days (and ignore Thomas's appearance), like Chris said, it makes for a slightly better ep. The music is nice, too.
My next lot:
The Flying Kipper vs Something In The Air.

Something In The Air is one of those episodes that doesn't have anything outstanding about it, but is simply a good episode. There's a lot of action, humour and sympathy packed into the episode, and it brings forward again the issue of subsidence on the rails. Quality episode. Incidentally Stuart, if you haven't seen one of the episodes, how can you really make a fair judgement? Doesn't seem to make sense to me. Percy Runs Away vs The Runaway

Percy Runs Away vs The Runaway Well, I'd gone by the synopsis of 'Skarloey Storms Through' and, to me, 'Skarloey the Brave', in spite of its errors, seems a lot better. For your choice, I'm choosing 'The Runaway'. Nice music, and plenty of action with Thomas's runaway and Harold flying to the rescue. One of Christopher Awdry's best ones, IMO. Next lot from me: Harvey to the Rescue vs. Edward Strikes Out. Stuart

Probably Harvey To The Rescue. Whatever your opinion of Edward's crane dislike or whatever it is Prof. Vengeance calls it, at least he wasn't being like that all throughout the episode.

Fish. It was more realistic, there was another great story about the Flying Kipper, and Duck, Henry and Thomas were perfect personality-wise, not to mention that this episode was the last one to star Duck as the leading character. It's just another series 4 classic.

Fearless Freddie. Despite the MAJOR continuity errors (since when is any engine older than Duke?), it wasn't all bad. It was kinda interesting. Though, I do wish Freddie was Ivo Hugh.

Percy's Promise Vs Gallant Old Engine
|
|
|
Post by Old Square Wheels on Mar 6, 2008 6:29:09 GMT
Tough call; in both, I immediately leap to the 'struggling through the storm' sequences. Think I'll go for Gallant Old Engine; the threat really seemed imminent. Rheneas had to struggle on for the sake of the railway, so his determination to see it through makes a happier ending when he does so, and even more so when he arrives home from the works. The music score wasn't bad either, and that's not just the storm music. Percy's Promise was still pretty good, but it felt a bit padded out at the start, just trying to fill the full 4 and a half minutes. *calm down OSW, it's just a game* Anyway, I'll go for Percy and the Signal v.s. The Deputation

|
|
Post by stuart7 on Mar 6, 2008 14:40:14 GMT
The Deputation - a much more dramatic episode than 'Percy and the Signal.' The snow-clearing sequences were impressive, with a lovely rendition of Donald and Douglas's theme. Also, there is the threat of the two being scrapped, and finally, the happy ending with all the engines whistling and cheering. As ChrisTE once said: "Just goes to show they don't make them like that any more."
Right, my next two:

Thomas and the Guard Vs Thomas Goes Fishing

Post by stuart7 on Mar 6, 2008 20:14:28 GMT
Ooooh, tough one... Right, I'm going for 'Thomas Goes Fishing.' Good bit of drama with the fish blocking Thomas's pipe, and you can actually feel the pain as he struggles on with his dampened fire, and then there's the humour as everyone manages to retrieve the fish from Thomas's boiler, with a nice supper of fish and chips to boot. One of Wilbert's most underrated stories, IMO.
Right, here's another set:
Thomas and Bertie vs. Percy and Harold.
