Was thinking about this a bit the last few days - how would one define a great song? Is it a song you just enjoy from top to tail, a song which reminds you of something great that happened to you, or even a song that just cheers you up whenever you hear it? For me, the immediacy of the start has a bit to do with the awesomeness of the song - whenever I hear certain openings of a song, I immediately cheer and just sit back and enjoy. Stuff like: Baker Street as previously mentioned Won't Get Fooled Again - side note: best scream in music history The Final Countdown Veteran Cosmic Rocker (The Moody Blues) - this song is just fun. You need to hear it. U Can't Touch This - Ditto. I still can't go past The Living Years though, makes you stop and think every time you hear it. One of the most powerful songs of all time, and unfairly overshadows the rest of the band's work. M&tM did plenty of good stuff, but little to none of it is remembered, which is a shame, given the quality of it. And most, if not all, of you would know my proclivity for Mike and the Mechanics by now, so it'd be a good idea for me to hop off my soapbox right about now. So I will.

Lady Marmalade by Christina Aguilera, Lil' Kim, Mya, & Pink In the running for greatest song of the 21st century so far, for sure. Four contemporary divas rip up 70s discofunk standard.

Couple of my Top 5 favorite songs from the 1980's are these right here!! Bruce Springsteen:Born in the U.S.A.- (The best song I've ever heard, even though it has rare scenes of people at Vietnam back then, but really it is the bestest song I ever heard in my entire life!) Dancing in the Dark- (The best time for me is during the night I listen to it very peacefully & I'd really enjoyed it very well too.) Glory Days- (Also a great song, especially it reminds me of myself hanging out with my friends on a bar watching baseball during a sunny day, still a very good song also.) Tears for Fears:Everybody Wants to Rule the World- (One of my most favorite songs that I've first heard long time ago during the commercial! Anyways, very good song actually! It made my day all right!) Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes:I've Had the Time of my Life- (Greatest song I've heard in my own good time of my life too!)

"Sly" by Massive Attack. Quietly understated, with whiffs of India and classical, haunting and melodic, carried by the voice of Nicolette and this tune she wrote.

I'll always love "Under Pressure" by Queen and David Bowie. I was at a karaoke party a few weeks ago and requested that song. When I got up there I started singing "Ice Ice Baby" for a laugh. I don't think many people got it though. Oh well.

I guess you don't joke around when it comes to such an epic song and the bastardizing of it by a white gangsta with a mullet.

Hey, do not diss the Vanilla Ice. The man played at North Wollongong Hotel on NYE. Finally made it big. ;D Nah, that is definitely one of Deacon's greatest moments. Not a huge fan of the song, but Bowie-Mercury would have been awesome to hear more of.

At the very least, I was expecting someone to get pissed off and "boo" me or whatever, but I don't think anyone there knew "Under Pressure". I mean, how is that not funny?
So of course, I look like a jackass, because I don't know any of the words to "Ice Ice Baby," aside from those in the title. I trail off, waiting for a reaction, but no. Nothing. Just empty stares. It was very disheartening.
After a few moments, I just say, "Wow, tough crowd," and bumble off the stage.

The Number of the Beast - Iron Maiden Master of Puppets - Metallica Symphony of Destruction - Megadeth Cowboys from Hell - Pantera Anti-Social - Anthrax Breaking the Law - Judas Priest Emerald Sword - Rhapsody of Fire (formerly known as Rhapsody)

I've been thinking alot about this recently.
For me, a great song is a catchy one that everyone seems to know and love. Nomatter what genre they're into. And the following list of songs is developed mainly from that description:
Livin' On A Prayer- Bon Jovi: Everyone I know loves this song. Side note-catchiest 'wah-wah' backing in music history. There She Goes- The La's: Maybe not allways known by name, but loads of people seem to recodnise the opening guitar riff. All Right Now- Free: Even if you havn't seen the chewing gum advert, people still know this classic! Bohemian Rhapsody- Queen: Granted, not everybody knows or loves this song compared to other Queen tunes. But it's still a well written classic. Pinball Wizard/My Generation- The Who: Two of the most notable songs from the 60s. Reknowned for their agression and defiance which led to them being banned from certain radio stations upon release. But, play them at a party and everyone sings along. The Final Countdown- Europe: I agree with everyone else on this one. One of the best synth tunes EVER! Hotel California- The Eagles: Again, a well written song which everybody seems to recodnise and a popular choice at parties.

very hard to pick one, but here's my list:
5. November Rain- Guns N Roses; a metal ballad for the ages, easily GnR's best song. anyone got Chinese Democracy?
4. Shine On, You Crazy Diamond- Pink Floyd; for a Pink Floyd fan like myself, it was tough to not put this one #1, but i settled for top five. underrated for Pink Floyd, and my fav from them.
3. American Pie- Don McLean; a timeless song, simple enough
2. Hotel California- The Eagles; my favorite guitar solo, absolutely a perfect song
1. A Day in the Life- The Beatles; underrated for the fab Four, and in consideration for #1. it will always scream "epic" to me.
