Here you can discuss your opinions of the best songs of all time; the most influential, tearjerking, beautiful, rockin' tunes ever made.
Here are some of my best:
Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody- is there any valid argument against this being one of the greatest? There are no words to explain it except: wow.
Lynyrd Skynyrd's Free Bird- I don't care what anyone says, Stairway to Heaven's solo pales to Free Bird's. Simply the best solo, and southern rock song, ever.
The Who's Baba O'Riley and Van Halen's Jump- tied for best ever synthesizers.
John Lennon's Imagine- kinda obvious, but it's still the greatest peace anthem.
Let discussion begin!

I think it's a close call between 'Bohemian Rhapsody' and Imagine' as at one point they were both considered the 'Greatest No. 1 Single' at different points. Although Rolling Stone Magazine did a list of the 500 Greatest Songs of all time and Bob Dylan's 'Like a Rolling Stone' was Number 1 and a song by The Rolling Stones (can't remember the name of it) was at Number 2
Mind you, it does look a bit biased - 'Rolling Stone'?

Fantastic choice on Imagine there, I humbly agree - it's actually quite relaxing in parts. Feargal Sharkey's A Good Heart is one of the best songs I've ever heard from the 80s. In my opinion, it is the BEST materialistic soppy "true eighties" song with an awesome guitar solo in it, ever. The whole song just reeks of "this was made in the eighties". The best song recorded (but not necessarily written) in the early 1980s, ever. And this is just my opinion now (as if my first point wasn't!): Elton John's cover of "Pinball Wizard" is one of the greatest classic rock songs ever, and also one of his far better covers (considering I don't really like Elton this means a lot coming from me, he practically butchered that one John Lennon song IMO.) The piano throughout is brilliant (especially at the beginning) and the guitar solo at the end is the pure essence of rock and roll. Best dance song ever: All I Wanna Do by Davidson. In fact I challenge anybody to find me an mp3 of that song because seriously, NOBODY remembers it. It was on the GTA 2 soundtrack but that's the only public recognition it's got. Mind you, it does look a bit biased - 'Rolling Stone'? Haha, I doubt they put a Rolling Stones song so high up due to that fact. The magazine just named itself after the band due to the band's massive popularity at the time, if I recall right. Besides, if you want to claim true sycophancy, didn't the Rolling Stones feature on that list at least 10 times?

My nomination has to be Chelsea Dagger by the fratellis. It's such a great Football-related song.

One song that I could listen to for hours on end, and never get tired of, would have to be this one-

My nomination would be all the Beatles' songs. They really were one of the most influential groups out there.
Another nomination would be "We Are the Champions" by Queen. Our old high school marching band would play it at the football games whenever our school won.
EDIT: Bit of an update here. I'm going to throw in Queen's "No One But You (Only the Good Die Young)" and "Find Your Grail" from Spamalot.

I heard this song which I think is one of the most moving, but I can't remember the name. I know how the tune goes.... www.megaupload.com/?d=DE35048EAny identification would be great.

I personally can't place it from that, TTTEFan. Perhaps if you're able to post a line of the lyrics that you can remember, we'll be able to identify it more easily. Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody- is there any valid argument against this being one of the greatest? There are no words to explain it except: wow Hmm, it's certainly one of the most creatively written pieces I've ever heard, but I do feel Queen have done better songs - Hammer to Fall, Radio Ga-Ga and Rock It to name but a few. The Who's Baba O'Riley and Van Halen's Jump- tied for best ever synthesizers. Jump is very close for me too, but for best synthesizers I'd have to nominate Europe's The Final Countdown. It's a tune you won't forget in a hurry. My nomination would be all the Beatles' songs. They really were one of the most influential groups out there. I only really know of their major hits, but surely The Beatles (like any other band) had their off-days. There's bound to be the odd-song in their backcatalogue that couldn't really be considered "influential".

BoRhap is vertainly the song that everyone identifies with Queen, but there are plenty of better ones they've managed - even in the same genre of "What the hell is this???" My personal preference when it comes to Queen is, was and always will be Now I'm Here. Love that song. Good call on TFC as well, Chris. I would nominate that for one of the greatest songs ever simply because even though it is frequently panned as one of the worst songs ever, it endures and remains popular. And the synths are bloody awesome. The thing with "Greatest Song Ever" threads is that they are purely subjective - one person can say one thing, another can say something different, and there will never be any agreement. But it's good for discussion. As for my personal nomination, I can break it down into categories instead of choosing just the one song for a start...but even then I'd have different nominations for each category... Ballad: The Living Years (Mike and the Mechanics) - which is actually my pick for greatest ever, which shouldn't surprise too many people. Other ones I love include Jealous Guy (Roxy Music) and Baker Street (Gerry Rafferty). Rock: Two stand out - Now I'm Here and More Than A Feeling (Boston). Couldn't really split them, and don't want to. Pop/Synth: Don't You (Forget About Me) by Simple Minds is a ripper. Out Of Mind Out Of Sight (The Models), Africa (Toto), The Final Countdown and When I See You Smile (Bad English) are up there too. As an extension of this thread - what would you consider the best album possible? As in, 15-20 songs, 1 song per artist max so there's no "12 Beatles, 3 Rolling Stomes, 2 Queen" style ones, much as you'd love it. I'd really have to think about it - I could probably hit 10 pretty easily, but it'd be a good think.

Ah, forgot Final Countdown. Just haven't heard it in a while.
How about best soundtrack song ever? I'd say Eye of the Tiger and Take My Breath Away are up there with the best.

Add another vote for Bohemian Rhaspody for Queen's greatest song ever. Also I'd have to say KISS's Rock and Roll All Nite, Bon Jovi's Living on a Prayer, Don McLean's American Pie, Creedence Clearwater Revival's Fortunate Son and the Rolling Stones' (I Can't Get No) Satisfication should be among the ranks of the greatest songs ever.
Honorable Mentions: Smells Like Teen Spirit by Nirvana and Another Brick in the Wall, Pt 2 by Pink Floyd.

Can't forget Pearl Jam's "Jeremy." Voted third best song of the 90's, after Smells Like Teen Spirit and Losing My Religion by R.E.M., by this site.

How about "I Started a Joke" by the Bee Gees. Smashing tune, and the lyrics are fantastic!

Lady Marmalade by Christina Aguilera, Lil' Kim, Mya, & Pink. All the songs by The Beatles and Elton John. And "The dance of the Hours."

Hmm... got a feeling this discussion could run and run and run and ru... OK, you get the idea! From reading the posts to date, I seem to be the only SIF member who really isn't keen on 'BohRap'... Now don't get me wrong, I've nothing against Queen, a brilliant band, and some of their material is great, but I just don't like this song. Maybe it's the scary face-merging video that put me off? Likewise, I like lots of Elton John's material, but even he's had some really bad stuff... anyone remember 'Are You Ready For Love'? 'Nuff said. I'm 100% with everyone who went with John Lennon's 'Imagine'. When a song has been covered by so many other artists, that kind of says it all. I really like the version Eva Cassidy did. In the same way, 'Stairway To Heaven' gets a vote. Everyone seems to want to have a crack at that one. So, my contenders for title of 'Greatest Song' (I'm not choosing... I'd sit here debating for days, and I've got things to do! ) include 'Proud Mary' Ike and Tine Turner (the ultimate exploding ballad!) 'Imagine' John Lennon 'Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me' Elton John, but I prefer the version by Oleta Adams 'Fairytale In New York' Kirsty McColl and the Pogues (for the wonderful, unfestive lyrics!) Loads more, but those are the 4 I think I'll put forward. Possibly. Unless... no sorry, that'll do. For now. Maybe. Hmm...

Admittedly I'm a bit shy at posting my list. Really don't know why.
Anyways, a short list (these are in no order):
1. Won't Get Fooled Again - The Who 2. Gimmie Shelter - The Rolling Stones 3. Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting - Elton John 4. Hurt (Nine Inch Nails cover)- Johnny Cash 5. Heroes - David Bowie
I could name more, but I think those will do.

Ditto on Lynyrd Skynyrd's Free Bird, and for me I'd have to say David Bowie's Somebody Up There, such a great song, sticks in your mind alot.
