Wasn't there a thread about 'em a while ago?
Anyway, I was just thinking about how great The Who is lately. They've got a really unique sort of thing to them that I can't quite put into words... almost like a cross between The Beatles and something like Led Zeppelin. Terrible shame I missed them when they played in Boston last week, though...
Anyone else a fan?

Yeah, oddly enough I was also recently thinking about them, despite the fact that I've only heard a few of their best-known songs. That's a pretty accurate comparison between the Beatles and Led Zeppelin. I realized how much I like them, and I'll probably buy a Greatest Hits collection soon. My personal favourite songs right now are "Baba O'Reilly", "My Generation" and "Pinball Wizard".

Magic Bus is amazingly catchy... I constantly find it to be one of those "stuck in the head" songs.
And CP, definately go for The Ultimate Collection if you can find it. It's about 30-ish songs long (though the first disc is hit-and-miss for the most part, but the second is superb) and worth every penny.

I've heard a few songs by The Who. "Magic Bus" and "Who Are You" really stick out in my mind. Both are really good.

I love The Who. Many of their songs I've learnt to play on the guitar including 'My Generation', 'Won't Get Fooled Again', 'The Kids Are Allright', 'Pinball Wizard' amongst many others. I even went to see them live about 2 months ago. Probably the highlight of my year besides the SiF UK Meeting.
I have 'The Ultimate Collection' and I'd say it's a good choice. I don't think much of the second disc compared to the first but it's still a must have album. Also, if you fancy a DVD about them then I'd reccomend the late 70s documentary 'The Kids Are Allright'. Which includes the very last performances of the band before the death of Kieth Moon (the drummer).

Saw The Who in Boston last night. Damn good show. Imagine being blinded and deafened to some of the greatest music of all time for two hours and you'll know what I mean when I say that the show was amazing... the highlight had to be when Baba O'Reily got so much applause that Pete told the crowd to f' off. ;D Here's a rough copy of the setlist... not sure if it's completely correct... I Can't Explain The Seeker Anyway, Anyhow, Anywhere Fragments Who Are You Behind Blue Eyes Sound Round Pick Up The Peace Endless Wire We Got A Hit They Made My Dream Come True Mirror Door Baba O'Riley Eminence Front A Man In A Purple Dress You Better You Bet My Generation Won't Get Fooled Again Pinball Wizard Amazing Journey See Me, Feel Me Tea & Theatre

They only played one song from their new album (Endless Wire) when I went to see them, but it was still amazing!

I got a copy of The Whos' new album for Christmas. So I'd better post my review:
For the first new set of new material in 24 years, it doesn't take long to see how much has changed since those days. 'Endless Wire' represents a very different look at the band that we've got to know over the years. For a start, most of the lyrics are difficult to make sense of. And it takes a bit of concentration to work out what the story behind each song is. Secondly, their voices have seen better days. Although Roger Daltrey can still put in a good performance, he sounds much better when performing live. Some of his efforts here are put to unfortunate shame by the occasional growl. However, this hasn't been enough to completely put me off. Most of the tunes are very catchy. And it didn't take long before some of them were literally stuck in my head. Particularly tracks like 'Fragments', 'Mike Post Theme', 'We Got A Hit' and 'Mirror Door'. To add to that, the full inclusion of the new Mini Opera 'Wire & Glass' adds to the interest. Afterall, it's something you don't see on many albums.
So to sum up, it's a very different breed of the Who. It may not dominate the days of 'My Generation', 'Tommy' or 'Who's Next', but it's an interesting collection of catchy new anthems. So I'd say if you like the Who then this album may be of an aquired taste, but in a world full of R&B, Rap and Hip-Hop, they can still cut it.
