Metal always comes highly recommended. Here's some bands that you simply must hear... with an open heart and an open mind, of course.
Metallica - always a classic. "St. Anger" did nothing for me, but everything else comes with a must listen. "Master of Puppets" and the Black album are equally their best work.
Scar Symmetry - Mixing melodic and death metal singing, these guys from Sweden will surprise you, in more ways than one. "Pitch Black Progress" and "Holographic Universe" are my top albums.
Slayer - Always number one along side Metallica, they helped bring thrash metal into the mainstream. "Reign in Blood", "South of Heaven" and "Seasons in the Abyss" are the best of the lot.
Dimmu Borgir - Norwegian black metal at it's finest. The band's name translates to "dark castle" or "dark fortresses" in Icelandic and Old Norse. My top albums from them? "Death Cult Armageddon" and "In Sorte Diaboli". Easy listening they are not.
Venom - The pioneers of black metal. One of the sickest and the darkest group to come out of England. "Black Metal" and "Welcome to Hell" are my top picks.
Rage Against the Machine - Need I say more? "Rage Against the Machine", "Evil Empire" and "Renegades" are albums you must hear before you die.
Korn - One of my first favourite bands. "Issues", "Life Is Peachy" and "Follow the Leader" are essential listening.
Trivium - I've loved this band for years. Sure, they're following in the footsteps of Metallica, but they are a stellar group nonetheless. "Ascendancy" and "The Crusade" come highly recommended.
Slipknot - What can I say? Nine guys from a wheat field in Iowa wearing homemade masks that make intense and beautiful music. Always awesome, always amazing. Every album is great, but "Vol. 3 Subliminal Verses" and "All Hope is Gone" are the best they've released.
As for soundtracks, there is a few non metal ones that are sweeter than sweet.
Modern Warfare 2 soundtrack - composed by Hans Zimmer. Very intense and very thunderous, very much like his work on Pirates of the Caribben.
Call of Duty 4 soundtrack - composed by Harry Gregson Williams. Melodic and grinding at the same time. The perfect end of the world soundtrack.
The Crow Soundtrack - composed by Graeme Revell. As dark and brooding as the movie with plenty of sombre moments to go with thumping and harder ones.
The Darkness soundtrack - composed by Gustaf Grefberg. Hard to find but worth the search. A very scary score to go with a very scary game. I wouldn't play this in the dark... and I'm speaking of both of them!
