after browsing the forum a bit i noticed that people's taste in music on here is very diverse, so i figured there's gotta be some people on here who like metal. 5 top fave favorite metal bands would be amon amarth, cannibal corpse, dimmu borgir, cattle decapitation, and arch enemy.

I'm not sure if we need a thread like this, but I'll just go with the flow anyway.
But I'm one of quite a few people who like Metal on SiF, been listening to Metal for around 15 years almost and have been to many concerts within that time (in fact aside from one act, Status Quo, during my duration of attending Metal concerts Quo have been the non-Metal act I've seen).
As to my Top 5 Favourite Bands: Fozzy, Iron Maiden, Metallica, Rhapsody (both Of Fire and Luca Turilli's) and Epica. I do like a bit of Amon Amarth, Cannibal Corpse (who are a great cure when some Stupid Idiot or annoying Kid that won't shut-up) and Arch Enemy - to whom I might add, I'm quite a fan of Alissa White-Gluz who; aside from the obvious that she's a total knockout to look at, is really quite unique in how she can do the screamos for Arch Enemy and guest appearances singing that way, but then sing in a more melodic fashion also for bands like Kamelot.
I do have quite an extensive list of other bands that I really like, but in terms of new-bands I've gotten into would have to be Helion Prime and Visionatica.

kamelot and epica are good bands too, i like all styles of metal: death, black, thrash, power, doom, folk, gothic, symphonic, groove, progressive, you name it. i listen to literally hundreds of different bands. i've never heard of helion prime or visionatica, i'll have to check them out.

I like some bands in the metal genre too, my faves are:
Within Temptation (Awesome band, first discovered them back in 2012, Hydra was a pretty cool album, but my all time favourite album would have to be The Unforgiving, The Heart Of Everything is great too, I also enjoyed the LIVE album they did, hope a new album gets released someday)
Epica (I have several of Epica's albums, recently got the new album The Holographic Principle which is superb, I love it)
Nigthwish (I only listen to the earlier stuff when Tarja Turunen was on vocals, I have all the earlier albums, but Over The Hills And Far Away is my favourite, "10th Man Down" is a great song, I wo'nt listen to any of the newer albums, I like Tarja's voice too much, I'm too loyal, haha, did'nt like it when I found out that someone else replaced Tarja as the other band members sacked her, she had such an amazing voice, I even have one of her solo albums, which is a good listen too)
Delain (I have only heard one of their albums called Moonbathers, it's really good, I must check out some more at some point)
We Are The Fallen (I think they only made one album called Tear The World Down, it's a good listen though)

Now whilst I've never been too keen on Anette, I still got to credit to Nightwish for at least bring something that's still as good that they'd produced with Tarja - even if the whole sacking of her lost them a lot of fans and is still sore for many to swallow. However, I do like Floor Jansen who Nightwish have now having replaced Anette back in 2012/3. If you listen to some of her songs with her previous bands After Forever & ReVamp, you'll see that she's worth the slot of being a Nightwish singer (not to mention that she and Tarja have duetted together at a Tarja live show). But Endless Forms Most Beautiful is worth a listen, might not be grand spectacular as many hope but its certainly worth a listen - plus the live album Showtime Storytime is definitely worth a listen because whatever Anette had sung on the last album she did with Nightwish: Imaginaerum, Floor kicks a lot of those songs into a high gear that words just can't express.

Thanks Rusty Red Scrap Iron, wow, think I may give the later albums of Nightwish a chance, that's amazing that your friend has met Tarja in person, I've seen Tarja being interviewed in a few videos I found on Youtube, she sounds like & am sure she is a really lovely lady, I think she is beautiful too, anyway, yeah maybe I'll listen to Endless Forms Most Beautiful soon.

Not into metal as a whole, but I'll make an exception for Sabaton. Plenty of their songs are "ehhh its okay", kind of directionless with somewhat generic blood-and-honour lyrics, but they have roughly 20 or so that I listen to almost religiously. Any other fans here?

Any other fans here? Personally I like Sabaton. Yeah sure many of their songs may sound rather generic from time to time and many may say: "Didn't they already do that?". But I always feel that Sabaton are a great history lesson that you never get from School, and plus the Power Metal subgenre which they play is generically all about slaying the blood or one's enemies and fighting with i.e. Manowar being one of the pioneers that with songs about Norse Mythology and etc. But I love Power Metal and I highly recommend to anyone - even if you aren't a Metal fanatic, because these bands can cover almost anything and turning into something that you can't get out of your heads. Its not simply the Dungeons and Dragons and J.R.R. Tolkien Metal. Plus if you go to their concerts, you can take your Girlfriend with you (even if she's not into Metal because Power Metal has something for everybody).

Nightwish is a metal band? Well, I guess I'm kind of a metalhead then...I bought and really like their Once CD. I only found this group because one of my very favourite moronic monster B movies, The Cave, uses this great song over the end credits, one that I liked so much that I eventually did a lyrics search on it with the thought of maybe finding a copy of it somewhere. Much to my surprise, the song had not been written for the movie, it was something called Nemo by Nightwish, aaaand I soon had a copy in hand thanks to my local music store. Turned out that I like a lot more than just the Nemo song on this album too. The female solo sung in--Finnish?--is another favourite and quite beautiful IMO. I'm always finding good music in a roundabout way like this. A car ad that used an especially nice version of the song Major Tom brought me to the group Shiny Toy Guns, and I discovered Jonsi and Sigur Ros thanks to a Jonsi song being used as background music for a video about volcanos!
Actually, now that I think about it, that Nighwish album reminds me a little of Rick Wakeman's Journey To The Center Of The Earth. Just the similar use of a symphonic backdrop, I'm sure...
