Besides Thomas, I really like the little engine that could.

I think we now see where some plots of Thomas eps have come from...
I used to watch Ivor the engine when I was younger. The last time I heard it was on Chanel 4 at 6 in the morning. I don't remember a lot of the episodes, but I do have a book of the first story (that came with a cassette) of how Ivor got his whistle (from an organ).

Now, that was a nostalgic show! Loved it when I was younger, but I havn't really seen it for years. It was on Nick Jr. last year, but it was took off and replaced by The Herbs. Shame really, even if I love The Herbs, Ivor the Engine was a railway based show which was allowed to be surreal!

I think that Ivor was surreal in such a way that it never really confused or annoyed anybody. It's especially why I liked it. Thomas was made with intended realism, so we always bang on about railway rules whenever we see a crap episode

I just loved its vision of Wales as this sort of semi-magical land, elements of modernity co-existing with its magical talking engines and singing dragons and helpful elephants. It seemed to be trapped in a permanent past, somewhere between 1900 and 1960, where change would never ruin things. And although it was fantastical, it had rounded and likeable characters- the exasperated Dai Station, the eternally enthusiastic Jones the Steam, the certifiably insane Mr Dinwiddie, the eccentric and overbearing Mrs Porty- it was a fantastic cast. Kind of what you might get if the Railway Series had been written by Dylan Thomas.
I actually think it could still appeal today if it were brought back, although I suspect Bani might have to be left out...
Did anyone see those adverts for Welsh digital TV that featured Ivor?

I used to be quite a fan of Ivor the Engine. I still have one of the old BBC videos lying about in my house. I watch it on the odd occassion. There were times when I thought it was a bit silly, but then, it looks a great show in comparison to most kids' programmes nowadays.

Bani was an Indian elephant keeper, who worked for the circus. He made his appearance in the 'Ivor and the Elephants' saga.
