Thought I'd take a chance and set this thread up. After all, the Layton games are quite popular and I like them A LOT! I also posted something about them in the Shoutbox a while ago and got a bit of good response. For anyone who hasn't played them, the series follows the adventures of Professor Layton & his apprentice, Luke Triton (along with Laytons assistant, Emmy Altava, throughout the last three games and movie). The games themselves are a mix of puzzles (plenty to go round! ), adventure, mystery, drama & crime, with a lot of likable characters (most of which have great voices) and some brilliant music. There are 6 games in total, along with a film: First Trilogy- Professor Layton & The Curious Village - Professor Layton & Pandoras Box - Professor Layton & The Lost Future Second Trilogy (Prequel)- Professor Layton & The Spectre's Call - Film - Professor Layton & The Eternal Diva- Professor Layton & The Miracle Mask - Professor Layton & The Azran Legacy Now, those are mostly the UK game titles. I'm not keen on the US titles and some of the changes made for those versions(e.g. Lukes US voice). Still, a great game series and highly recommended by me. Anyone else a fan of Professor Layton?

I happen to know the guy who voices Layton, Chelmy, and Don Paolo! And I also got some lessons from him. As for the US titles, some of them are the same as the UK titles; The Curious Village and the Azran Legacy. I don't really play the games. I just watch the cinematics.

Oh, I love this series. It's so much fun, for the most part. ^^ And certainly enough to keep me gripped.
Also, there's a crossover with another adventure-puzzle game series, "Ace Attorney", which just came out in Europe last week. If you're a fan of either series, I recommend it. Big time.

I've been a fan of the Professor Layton since the first game came out in the UK. I found it hillarious that UK!Luke has the same voice as Roary The Racing Car. This took his claim in the movie "Eternal Diva" of being "Apprencince NUMBER ONE!" from funny to hysterical. Now, as a long time fan of both Layton and Ace Attorney, I was really excited about the crossover game comming out. However, my expectations were too high and I didn't enjoy the game as much as I could have. I have two major issues with the game- The first is a story related issue, so I'm putting it in a spoiler tag. {Problem Number 1}Every time you prove Espella or Maya innocent of being a witch, Espella begs to be burned anyway. It's this that indirectly gets Maya dunked into the fire after her trial. I know it's supposed to make Espella look noble and self sacrificing, but after all the trouble I went through to prove her innocence, it just makes her look like an ungrateful b*tch who's throwing everything I've done for her back in my face. The reason this is a big deal is because you just feel cheated afterwards. So this makes it really hard to like Espella as a character. Problem Number 2: This one is about the gameplay itself. This game is unbeleivably stingy with the puzzles. They're so few and far between that I started to think that Level-5 just ran out of ideas. In the older games, all the NPCs had a puzzle for you when you first meet them and there were plenty of background objects that reminded characters of puzzles. But in the crossover, it's just talk, talk, talk, talk, talk, talk, talk, talk, talk, talk, talk, talk and finally an actual puzzle once in a blue moon. So, was there anything I liked about they game? Well, I liked Maya's voice. And reguarding her character model, I can't put my finger on it but she seems, I don't know...cuter, somehow. Phoenix's model took a short while to get used to, as I'm more used to seeing the one from Dual Destinies. Since his old outfit was available in Dual Destinies as an alternate costume, it makes me wonder why Capcom didn't just use that one.

Oh, Professor Layton... How the mighty fell.
Let me preface this by saying I have played all three of the original trilogy through no less than twice, and completed the majority of the puzzles.
The first four games are all excellent, although admittedly the first one's twist was painfully obvious it was still a charming, fun, and all-around high quality experience. The third holds the claim of being, alongside Ace Attorney, one of the few game series to bring me to tears, and while the fourth was by no means perfect, it was still a solid prequel that set up the series nicely.
And then MiracleMask happened.
I have never felt so utterly betrayed by a game series before. The twist was so stupidly obvious it was honestly insulting to my intelligence, the puzzles were mostly crap, and the story completely fell apart the microsecond I realized that "oh good lord they aren't serio-YES they are."
I can't even bring myself to touch Azran Legacy for fear it will further poison my ability to enjoy the good games from this series. As AAvPL is still not out on this side of the pond, I can only pray they haven't ruined that too...
