Hello there friends, This is a computer enthusiasts thread to compliment the video game thread. Got a new Razor Lachesis for your games and want to talk about it? Want to rant about how digital rights management sucks? Grabbed a new laptop for school out of FutureShop and not sure why Windows 7 does not show you having a full 4Gb of Ram? Have you discovered the wonders of GIMP on Ubuntu 10.04, oh its amazing what you can do for free isn't it? Are you experiences drops after updating the firmware on your Dlink DIR-655 wireless router that you used to think was the best thing since sliced bread? You've come to the right place in Off Topic to discuss anything computers, get some advice on your trouble. Or even just post your desktop like this... or this... Just remember to try and use thumbnails for those and slow internet connections be wary of clicking those. ---- So, is everyone happy about Google image's new layout or getting fed up with how much slower it feels when loading? Oh and anybody else here a fan of the Opera browser? Opera 10.60 came out recently and is hailed as the fastest browser yet. Have not tried it yet but soon.

Great idea, though I would be calling this thread 'Tech Support' or something. Yeah, I've seen Google Image's new layout, and to be honest, it's kind of awkward. At least it looks good!
Now I have a Tech Support issue of my own. My home network consists of two PC's running Windows 7, another PC used
for downloads which runs on XP, and a laptop also running XP. The problem is, I cannot access any other computer from the laptop. I can connect to the Internet OK, but I cannot
share files with any other computer. The W7 diagnostic tells me that it can 'find the name resolution server, but can't find the host name.' It's the
same problem with ethernet and wireless connections from the lappy. I'm really baffled. If some-one can give me tips on how to fix it, I'd be thankful.
Finally, if this thread goes anywhere, I'll offer some advice for ripping video off of DVD's, a true technical
enigma. Kthnxby!

Can you see all your computers in Network Places? Lets start with getting these computers talking. Do you have a Workgroup setup that has a common name between all computers on your network? On XP go to System Properties and click on computer name. And this looks like how to do it in Windows 7 straight from M$: windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Join-or-create-a-workgroup. Normally the default is 'WORKGROUP' try changing it to a name of your choosing on all of them. Remember to keep it the same on all computers. After that you should at least be able to see all the computers on the same network. Then we can setup sharing for the folders and drives you want to share over your network.

Yeah, it's all on the same network and workgroup, MSHOME, so I can see all of my computers fine. But now that you mention it...
...Yeah, my lappy's Shared Docs/Music folders are shared, so I should be able to access them, but I STILL can't. I seems I can do everything BUT access files on it. Sometimes I can access the other XP computer from it but with the Seven computers, it's like a blockade! BTW Meta, it's a Dell Inspiron 6000, if that helps.

Perhaps firewalls/ antivirus software is getting in the way. What software of that sort do you have?

For antivirus, I'm using AVG Free 9.0, which works fine. For the firewall, File & Printer sharing is excepted from it (as it should be), so I doubt it's either of those. Maybe if I explained when the problem started? Basically, I wanted to set connections with my University's wireless. So added it, tweaking it's settings as instructed; then I could go online with my lappy. Then after that, when I tried file-sharing at home, 'Windows cannot access //QJ-LAPPY'. What if I tried removing all of the wireless networks off the lappy, then re-added my workgroup?

Go ahead and try removing and readding your computers to a workgroup. Try running the 'Setup Wizard' in Network places when setting things back up.

OK, I tried updating the network and graphic drivers on the lappy, only to then have stuck on a low-res display. So I just took that opportunity to do a system restore. Now my display and network are working fine, and I can share files again. I guess I took the easy way out! Thanks Meta.

Ok, so I've got a 4 month old Toshiba Portege R700. Every so often the fan runs high and it seizes up and freezes. Anything I can do to prevent this?

The Portege R700 is a super nice notebook that packs a lot of power into a very thin and light chassis. Does it bluescreen at all? Are you doing anything specific or anything that could be stressing the system when it happens such as games or maybe HD video? Does it get really hot or any hotspots when it freezes up?

I'm not really a games person or anything, but what happens is that it will freeze and then the fan will run on full tilt until I press the power button. I got a cooling fan as a birthday present and even with that it still seizes up from time to time. There is no blue scren of death or anything, and I'm extremely careful about accidentally dropping it or putting it down. The fan issue is sporadic, so there's no telling when it will happen next.

Okay, found the below thread searching around the notebookreview.com forum. forum.notebookreview.com/toshiba/512036-portege-r700-freezing-full-speed-fan-no-keyboard.htmlIt seems you are not the only one experiencing these types of freezes on the R700, for some its constant for others just a few times a week. Some experience it when plugging in their iphones or other smartphones. Some users have problems with Firefox causing crashes or with the display driver causing crashes. The Firefox thing sounds a little like bull to me but it may be worth it to try switching to Chrome or Opera for a little trial period if you use Firefox. Try updating your display/video/graphics driver. Try looking for a driver direct from Intel rather than Toshiba. I believe the graphics in the R700 are the Intel HD. The other intriguing possibility for the freezes I got from that thread are problems with the fingerprint reader. If you have a fingerprint reader then the issues with firefox and smart phones make more sense. I believe that is optional on the R700, do you have one? If you do... ...Try the patch listed here. forum.notebookreview.com/6777916-post38.htmlThere is also a work around in this post... forum.notebookreview.com/6712195-post35.htmlThat thread seems to have died out since then and no one seems to mention the problem in the R700/R705 owners thread so that's actually a good sign. Its a good thing it died out... there seems to be a little bit of flaming in that thread that got away.

Okay, question...
do you think it'd be okay to tear into a flightsim stick to see if I couldn't fix the constant problems with it wanting to move without any input? Or should I just buy a new one?

If its under warranty you still you might try getting support for it, there may be a firmware update available or something even if your not in warranty. If no it might be time for a new one. I don't think it would be worth opening something like a flight sim stick.
BTW, any checked out the new 11.6 MacBook air? Looks beautiful.

Ay, that it is. But until Apple knocks the price down I wouldn't dream of buying it for an instant.
(Not that I'm malcontent with my 17" MacBook Pro anyway...)

Its really not a bad deal for an Apple ultraportable although the platform for the new Air is so last year. You buy Apple you have to pay for the logo. Atleast Apple sets themself apart unlike Sony.

Thanks for the help on that. I have the fingerprint reader, and this rectified my problems.
Now I have another question.
My Verizon contract is now up, and my godmother (who is paying for it) has decided to go to Metro PCS simply because she does not want another contract. Personally, I despise Metro because it's known for having shoddy customer service and bad signal strength over all. I live in Miami, so it's the network of choice for alot of immigrants who arrive in the US and don't want an expensive phone bill.
Here is my predicament. My parents, and most of my friends are on AT&T. I personally would like to get an iPhone 4. If I go to Metro, I could get the BlackBerry which is even more expensive than the iPhone. Since I'm a student, I have no income per say, and I have to think about getting my copay for medication and the doctor's visits.
So my choice is this:
Do I go with Metro, and not pay anything but get basically crappy reception and customer service, or do I pay for a service which I might not even be able to sustain?
I've got two weeks to decide this as she is in Tanzania with my Godfather for her two week vacation.
Help!!

I've recently aquired a new computer with a Windows Vista OS. It works fine so far, but there is only one problem - Windows Media Player.
When I close it, it continues to run, only I can't see it, and it won't close completely, no matter what I do. From what I understand, this is a feature called "Mini-Mode".
Is there anyway to disable this? It's really annoying me. I've tried the Right Click Toolbar > Toolbars > Windows Media Player (uncheck) option but that didn't work..... is there another way that does?
