As of (not too) recently, I've noticed that music heard on the Top 40 lists these days have been well...not as good as what popular music used to be.
For one thing that I believe this is so is that all songs in that category sound relatively the same. Everything has the same blasting Techno/House (and even some Reggaeton ) beats, over-auto-tuned vocals, and uninspired lyrics that add up into songs that don't differentiate themselves too much at all from each other. These songs are very forgettable, and don't hold much of a space in my memory.
I'm constantly switching stations only to hear Rhianna (spelling?), Justin Bieber (he needs to grow up a little before he sings some of the songs he's got), Ke$ha (who's songs are all too similar to EACH OTHER and her personality too trashy to be let onto the airwaves), and lastly dozens upon dozens of cookie-cutter Rap/R&B artists whose names i haven't even found out yet. It's as if these days song artists know that this same, overused nonsense can make them a quick buck so they just randomly come onto the scene, make another song about sex and a-a-a-a-a-alcohol, and have their 15 minutes of fame.
It's becoming quite sad to say the least, mainly because kids are eating these songs up like they are the best pieces of music they've ever heard. I live in New York, and the things I see young men and women (10-15, if not younger) acting like, dressing like, and speaking like are almost appalling. People my age (early 90's group) I have seen do some stupid stuff like drink, party, and engage in sexual activity at least had some sort of an understanding that what they were doing was way beyond their age...they were just stupid kids who did it anyway.
My main point with that is that Top 40s songs these days are making it seem apparent to this age group that its perfectly OK to do these sort of things, if not saying that life is only good when you do those things!
I'm a huge fan of rock, particularly classic rock and 90s alternative. and one thing I can say about those songs were that most of them each had their own unique atmosphere, were all memorable in their own sort of way, and they all had their own messages to send out. Even songs about sex, drinking, and partying were either set up in a metaphorical fashion, or sung in a way that you wouldn't notice it unless you really listened to the lyrics carefully. And Top 40 songs in those days were definitely no exception to these characteristics.
But I want to hear from you guys, what do you think about this subject. I can say right now that I have a habit of being overly-opinionated on my own beliefs, and that I could be taking this way to out of proportion. But I really do feel that somethings wrong with the popular music of today, and I wish that songs were still made the way they used to be like.
So in this thread, discuss anything you feel needs to be discussed about this topic. I know there are others out there that feel the same way I do, and I want to hear from the good ol' SiF Crew what they think about the music industry these days!
