I'm not sure how this thread is going to go down but I thought I'd try it out since it's Ash Wednesday tomorrow. I did consider including Easter on this thread but I suspect that warrents a thread of its own, don't you? Anyway, I'm sure some of you may know a bit about Lent and where it originated - I'm not exactly a biblical expert! Setting that issue aside, the main point of this thread is - if you give things up for Lent at all, if you've got something on your minds to give up at this moment or if Lent isn't a major player in your lives, you're welcome to discuss it here. Warm Regards As Always, MRHloco

I might be the only person here who probably enjoys Lent. There's something refreshingly sombre about it compared to the rest of the year. I'm not sure what I'm giving up for Lent. I'm determined not to say sweets since I usually fail at that - one of the drawbacks of having a birthday that invariably falls in Lent. Out of curiosity here, did anybody go to church to recieve the traditional ashes today?

Re: Traditional AshesI'm afraid I didn't, LNER! Re: What I'm Giving Up...Well, I might as well share it here, I suppose. Because I love railways so much, I often find myself writing long lists of locomotive numbers, namely as data for potential projects I've set myself for the long term future. Unfortunately, much as I enjoy this, it does tend to distract me from other more pressing matters, such as my novel (which I think I've discussed in another thread to do with other interests). As a result, by giving it up for Lent, perhaps I might just be able to finish the novel itself by June 12th (my birthday). It's idealistic, of course (I try not to set myself deadlines with things I'm supposed to enjoy ) but then I suppose I like being idealistic every so often. Is anyone else giving anything up for Lent that they'd like to share with us? Warm Regards As Always, MRHloco

I won't be giving anything up for Lent. Instead, my mom has asked me to do some cleaning around the house. It's mainly my room, which is starting to look like the aftermath of a tornado.

Hmm... that's a good idea, Aidan. I was trying to think of something I could give up for Lent (just for the heck of it, I'm not particularly religious), but I couldn't come up with anything. Maybe instead of giving up something, I could do more.
(And don't worry about your room looking like the aftermath of a tornado, mine looks like Godzilla rampaged through it, then a tornado hit it, then an atomic bomb went off in it, then angry Shih Tzus rummaged through it looking for treats.)

Seeing as how we're in the midst of Lent now, I was wondering if anyone new wanted to share their experience? Personally, I'm Jewish, so I don't observe, but I am fascinated by what people choose to give up for Lent because of how important they are.

I'm Catholic, so I'm observing Lent. I'm giving up... Pinterest. Heh heh...it hasn't been easy I'm also giving up Twitter but only after 9pm. Otherwise it's all I'll do for a few hours nonstop, and there are other things I could be doing.

Well, I guess I read this topic too late. But I have to say I did give up doing anything Lego- or TTTE related, be it in real or on the internet. What's weird for me is it seemed to be not too hard, even though I did use much of my time for both before. What I learned is, that time is one of the most important things in life as we only have limited amount of it. So it's better to spend it wisely on the things that mean a lot. And that's what I want to keep for after Lent, to spend my time wisely
