Mike Rutherford was in a better band than Genesis as well I don't mind Genesis, but on the whole they actually seem dominated by Phil Collins as a band, and then overshadowed by him when they did their 'side projects', be they solo work, Mike and the Mechanics or whatever. Also, it's a pretty talented band that has Phil Collins, Peter Gabriel and Mike Rutherford in it, so there's always some good stuff there. Personal favourite song would be I Can't Dance, followed by Invisible Touch. But there's a fair few things of theirs I don't mind.

Phil Collins was originally the drummer, when the lead singer was Peter Gabriel. In this line up, with Steve Hackett on guitar, Mike Rutherford on bass(?) and Tony Banks on keyboards, Genesis was a classic prog rock group of the mid-1970s. From this era, "Foxtrot" is a classic LP, containing the awesome 23 minutes of "Supper's Ready", apocalyptic, visionary.
When Gabriel left to go solo and Collins took the vocals, many consider the band "jumped the shark". They were certainly held up as the example of prog excess when punk came along.

I've heard that Peter Gabriel was forced to leave the band becuase he kept making fun out of Phil Collins. My favourite songs are...
- Follow You, Follow Me - Turn It On Again - That's All - Land Of Confusion - In Too Deep - Jesus He Knows Me - Hold On My Heart - Congo

I wouldn't say I'm a fan of Genesis, but I do like the odd song; Jesus He Knows Me, Land Of Confusion & There Must Be Some Other Way which is sadly an underapricated & underrated song in my opinion.
