I understand that the Thunderbirds film of 2004 gained rather mixed opinions, from fans and critics alike. One question I'd like to ask you is: how would you lot have done it? We've had discussion like this over the 'Magic Railroad' film, so why not for this one?
My idea would have been to have kept the Hood's conspiracy (the oil rig, blasting Thunderbird 5 and so on), but perhaps given him a more sinister plot, rather than rob the Bank of England. I would also have given Scott, Virgil and Gordon as big a role as Alan (John's role was big enough for me), left Fermat out, given Brains better involvement, kept Alan as a IR member (as per the series), but have it that he hasn't been involved in a rescue for ages, perhaps.
I've more to think of, but those are my basic ones

Hmm, intresting topic this. It's been a long while since I last saw that film, but I wasn't entirely pleased with Penelope fighting the henchmen. I'd remove all the cartoon sound fx as they really didn't fit that scene, and to give the direction a better balance of humour and drama rather than let it be all-out comedy/karate action scene.

I didn't like the script as it had very little to do with the Thunderbirds. It was more of a Spy Kids rip off. A remake of Thunderbirds are go would have been good.

Don't redesign the Thunderbirds and keep them like they were in the tv series. That's what I would've liked. Thunderbird 2 suffered.
I'd also rather the film being set in its proper time frame, not a prequel to the series.
That's all I can think of right now.

I wasn't impressed with the whole 'kids saving the day' thing, and all the focus on Alan, as well as an indian Kyrano and a british Hood (very incompatible with the idea of being brothers). plus far too many bright colours and Ford product placement (yes they helped financially but still, a friend commented that a quick shot of a ford badge on the front of the off roaders the grunts were chasing the kids bordered on subliminal advertising). The hood's plan wasn't so bad in itself (at least up to taking over the island) but a lot of things were not cleared up (like what happened to the hood's sub and the other henchmen?). as for what I would have instead? I'm not sure, definitely keep the hood having a trap plan, but a rescue plan where the other tracy brothers actually had a proper role to play would be required, as they were reduced to near irrelevancy.

In it's early days I read a plot that the villan was someone completly different. I would say that should have been the Hood in disguise. That would have been good.

Maybe show some stuff from the episodes, like, the Ned Cook Show.
Keep the machines the way they are though, they look awesome as their original designs.

How's this for a conspiracy for the Hood - instead of robbing the Bank of England, how about plotting to assassinate the Queen of England on her 60th Anniversary, and using the Thunderbirds craft (possibly Thunderbird 2) to deliberately crash into the palace, bringing IR's name into disrepute?
I'll expand on this later. Sounds a bit rough, I know, but that's the Hood, isn't it?

NEVER![/end fanboy mode] Unless it were a decoy of it, like in The Imposters. That could work. I do not feel the assassination of her majesty would be appropriate. I'd rather an important ambassador. Although the plot could just be about kidnapping the queen rather than murdering her outright.

Seeing as this thread's been dead for some time, I thought I'd announce something I found regarding the Thunderbirds film which I found on the imdb website. It's in the trivia section. "Had been in development since 1996. Rumors circulated in April 1998 that Peter Hewitt was to direct the film and shoot it entirely in CGI, a la Toy Story (1995). It was later reported that Warner Bros. were going to produce a live-action spin-off of the television show, with the Baldwin brothers (Alec Baldwin, William Baldwin, Stephen Baldwin, and Daniel Baldwin) tipped to play four of the five Tracy brothers, and Rowan Atkinson as Brains. The WB project would be shot in Sydney, Australia, in a collaboration with Village Roadshow Pictures. PolyGram Pictures later picked up the project in October of that year, and had planned to produce it on a budget of $75 million, but it was during pre-production that Universal Pictures bought out PolyGram in 1999. The project was then shelved for three years until director Jonathan Frakes signed up for the film in July 2002. Universal then ordered a rewrite of the script with a much younger audience in mind than what was originally planned. Several script changes occurred during production of the film. Originally, the plot called for one of the Tracy brothers to be kidnapped whilst the others were retrieving a stolen object belonging to the government. The climax at the Bank of London was also initially meant to involve car chases (some involving Grand Prix racing cars), and a helicopter chase." Interesting stuff this - perhaps it ought to piece the jigsaw together on why the film was not as successful as it could have been... Here's the link, btw: www.imdb.com/title/tt0167456/trivia. Stuart

That does sound interesting. I can see Alec as Virgil. If it was done in 1996 he would have been good for the role. I had a Thunderbirds book which tells you alot of facts and it did mention the movie. It said Sean Connery was planned to be Jeff.

I was SOOOOOO disapointed with the film, as has been mentioned it became a kid saves the day story, and really suffered with most of the Tracy's out of actions. The crafts designs should have stayed the same, and been a mixture of model/CGI. Now that would have looked awesome!! ;D

To be honest, I didn't so much mind the fact it was a prequel. It was just the plot they executed was awful. I think a storyline focusing on how Internation Rescue was started would have been better. Gerry Anderson's team already established rich backstories for most of the characters, so it would have been good to have seen it realised on the big screen. The film could start shortly after the death of Jeff Tracy's wife, and follow him meeting Brains, Kyrano and so on, his struggles to get IR started, and then perhaps end with their first big rescue. Jeff's full bio can be read here: www.geocities.com/johntracytb5/jeff.html
