No. Just...NO. A friend of mine alerted me to this...monstrosity...that's been making the rounds of the Net and breaking apart the childhoods of all of those who grew up in the 80's. Directed by Tim Hill...whose only credits for a live action film is Max Keeble's Big Move. He's directed only animations up until and past that particular Nickelodeon release, and was amongst those the American Parents Board went completely schitzophrenic at for the so-called injoke involving Spongebob Squarepants's apparent homosexual tendancies. Now he's listed as director of this. ... I'm going outside and shooting my poor childhood.

NOOOOOOO.
I hate what they've done to Simon. He was the nerd of the group. Now he looks the oposite. Everything looks wrong. Who's playing Dave by the way?

Man, nothing is safe anymore... would you be strong enough to shoot my childhood for me?
I used to love watching this. I've still got two working videos. I can easily see this leaping face-first into the IMDB's Bottom 10.
Perhaps I am just being "sad" and "gay" and perhaps I should give it a chance. But let's face it, if a CGI Thomas film came out and we weren't aware of it til now (and it came out at Christmas), would we be happy? I doubt so.

Who's playing Dave by the way? Jason Lee apparently. It also looks like they've got the original voice actors back to play the three leads. I don't think it looks all that bad. Of course, their appearances would have to be updated for this. They wore those wierd smock/night-shirt type things in the original show, which wouldn't really cut it these days. Put it this way, I'd be more likely to go and see something like this out of curiousity (and memories of the original), than say, Chicken Little or Meet the Robinsons. I say give it a chance.

I actually enjoyed Meet The Robinsons. Most Pixar films are pretty good.

I actually enjoyed Meet The Robinsons. Most Pixar films are pretty good. If Pixar was doing this film, it'd probably not have made me scream blue murder at it when Laura sent it to me. I'm just begging Hollywood does not do what I figure it might - that is to say, live action, CGI characters and live animals. Garfield wasn't that great for me, and as an animator and from my standpoint, why couldn't they have made Odie CGI like the cat? A live animal versus a CGI animal side-by-side doesn't work in a film, from my POV as someone who does the occasional CGI promo clip. www.imdb.com/title/tt0952640/That link lists the vocal talent/acting talent...and Tim Hill. Just knowing they picked a director who up until his first film was only doing cartoons...yes, I see it going very far indeed. I do believe Christopher here at the forums made a rant-like comic in regards to an episode of Spongebob directed by Tim Hill - it should give you an idea of exactly how "good" the guy is...

Great, so three innocent if mischievous chipmunks are re-classified as hoodniks and 'thug-stylze hi-life' now?
Thankfully these did not play a major factor in my childhood [DA-DAH-DAH! MORE THAN MEETS THE EYEEEE!] -ahem.
Please. Let it die now.

I disagree on that point. Rupert the Bear kept his clothing from the comic book days without trouble (although they were considering on making him look like a chav on a few points) I'd argue that Rupert the Bear is more iconic than the Chipmunks though, which is why him keeping his normal appearance is more of a given. My thoughts: Meh. They want to contemporize it, and that's fair enough. It's not like the Chipmunks from the 60s or 80s shows looked much like the ones from the 50s records. They certainly look a lot more like chipmunks, as opposed to human/chipmunk hybrids. Yeah it looks different, but I'm guessing that's because they're not going for the nostalgic fans. And I for one am okay with that. Because that way lies ruin, in the long run. And yeah, I don't think it looks that great either, but I say the same thing about some of the designs in the new Transformers movie, and everyone loves that. I remember A&TC as a good show. Not a great show, not one I'd immediately buy on DVD, but nonetheless a good show for its time. And for everyone that's saying 'Oh, they're ruining my childhood', let me just say this-it's still there. Those memories you have of watching the show are still there in your mind. They're not going back in time and replacing the show with these new-style chipmunks. They're not going to go to your house and remove all your old videos, replacing them with DVDs of the new movie. Your childhood's safe, it's your future that you should concern yourself with. Now by all means complain about the movie, because hell, it looks like it deserves it. But be a bit more sparing with the childhood comments. Did that 'Thunderbirds' movie a few years back ruin the original Thunderbirds episodes? Nope. If anything, take pride in the fact that this movie'll probably show why the old designs were better. And besides, it's gotta be better than the last live-action Chipmunk movie they did.

Ok, Simon looks a bit off, but just think of another 80's cartoon (admittedly sci-fi) that just made it big in live action: TRANSFORMERS...
I'm going to reserve my judgment on this.

Alaric, when did the last live action Chipmunk movie come out? I know there was a feature lenght where they find their mother.

Came out a couple of years ago, it was called 'Little Alvin and the Mini-Munks'. One of those low budget, direct to video affairs. I think it was like a 'Muppet Babies' for the 80s show (had the Chippettes and everything), except obviously not as good as Muppet Babies.

Alaric, when did the last live action Chipmunk movie come out? I know there was a feature lenght where they find their mother. If you're referring to the 1987 Chipmunk Adventure, they don't find their mother in that. The closest thing is the Chipettes singing about their mother. You might be thinking of an episode of the TV series where they met their mother. Anyway, yeah, this looks terrible. Alvin, especially, looks like a drug dealer. The whole concept of doing a live-action Chipmunks movie is a bad idea. Jason Lee actually looks okay for the role as Dave, but the ultimate test is whether he'll be able to yell "AAAALVIIIIIIIIN" right. I recently saw a bit of the 60's cartoon, and it was pretty fun. I liked the 80's cartoon as a kid, but rewatching it a bit, it really doesn't hold up too well, it's just not very entertaining. I really liked the Chipmunk Adventure though, for some reason.

Not keen on the toilet humour aspect shown at the end of the trailer, but otherwise I still think it looks and sounds quite good.

Yeah I agree looks average so far Jason Lee looks good as Dave and the voice work sounds good too. But that humour was awful and unfunny. Other than that I'd like to see more before I judge. Notice that the Chipmunks are smaller.

I may go see it, it looks good. Especially because both voice actors for the three chipmunks are the same as from the TV show, just like Optimus Prime was in the movie and series.
The trailer is kinda cheezy especially at the beginning when you dont expect them x)
