American Dad, in my opinion, is nowhere near as funny as Family Guy. The characters are very simple;
Macho husband (The main character) Stereotypical 'otwife Depressed daughter Smart yet nerdy son Talking pet Strange member
It's basically another Family Guy attempt and feels really, err, n00bish. Still a good laugh sometimes, the Alien is very funny.

Yeah, Seth Macfarlane really ripped himself off with this series. I don't think it has the potential to be as good as Family Guy was before, but actually at the moment I find myself enjoying it more than the new FG episodes. I really find it annoying that they're so similar though. American Dad would definitely not have been made if it weren't for Family Guy; it's too weak to stand on its own, and the best writing on this show isn't as good as the best writing on Family Guy was when it started. However, this show IS getting better, slowly. The characters are becoming more interesting, and it doesn't have those increasingly annoying cutaways or flashbacks (although I know alot of people love those on FG). There are some scenes that actually make me laugh out loud, which Family Guy hasn't done since Season 3. Here's how I see it: Old Simpsons>Futurama>Old Family Guy>American Dad>New Simpsons>New Family Guy

I think American Dad is evolving into something better than the sum of its parts, and some of the more recent episodes are almost as good as Family Guy. I think the central problem with it is that the central characters just aren't appealing. The wife is sensible but that's about all, the daughter just seems to rebel against everything, the goldfish... don't get me started on the goldfish. The worst offender is Stan himself. The guy is just a jerk. It's not like he's an imperfect but basically likeable character, like Peter Griffin or Homer Simpson. He's unsympathetic at the very core of his personality. He might supposedly learn a lesson at the end of an episode, but then he'll be acting like a jerk again in the very next episode. It's not clear why his wife married him or why she found him attractive in the first place.
At the centre of something like this, you really need a character who is flawed, but has the depth to make him vaguely sympathetic, or at least understandable. Homer Simpson, Philip J. Fry, Peter Griffin and even Hank Hill are all characters who can be stupid, do wrong things and have the wrong attitude, but at heart they're good people just trying to live the best life they can. With Stan Smith, the emotions are on the outside but the attitude is on the inside.

The thing that REALLY bothers me about American Dad is that Stan looks EXACTLY like Quarmire. Seriously. Aside from that major flaw (in my opinion), American Dad is a funny show, but it's nothing original at all. Sometimes I seriously wonder why Seth McFarlane even bothered to create the show in the first place.

Hmm...I watched a few on the old Beeb, but it wasn't that good as they made out It has actually flopped on BBC1 along with Family Guy, they moved from Saturday 7pm to Sunday Night in a matter of weeks! I don't think their being aired at all now

The problem there is that Family Guy and American Dad are the kind of thing that appeals to people in their teens and twenties. Of course it's going to flop on Saturday at 7, everyone's out!

Yeah, I watch it. Like 'Family Guy', it's on of the few shows that can make me laugh out loud. Where I'm from, it's on Seven at 22:30 on Thursday nights, followed by it's 'sister show', 'Family Guy'. Unfortunetly because I have school on Friday, I can't really watch it. But Good Friday's next week... ;D
