Actually Taspo ID cards do use a scanner to check. False ID's isn't really much of a problem, at least not as much as forgetting to leave home without taspo. Another related cigarette vending machine in one that has a camera, they take a pic of the buyer and run through a set of files that have information on about evey citizen in Japan. They check and/or identify that person so he/she is not underage nor is not mistaken to be underage. This system is a little more trustworthy than Taspo, but it is a problem if your a visitor from another country. That sounds ridiculously Orwellian to me. Anyway, cigarette vending machines are awful, I've used one once, nearly 7 pound for 20 cigarettes.

In public places where people may choose to move freely, I think people should be allowed to smoke. In places where people have can't move freely (courthouses, schools, public transport), smoking should be restricted so nobody is forced to be exposed to smoke.
I also think workplace related smoke (including eateries and bars) should be restricted only to sequestered smoking zones and that employers should be forbidden to require that employees service these smoking zones if they don't want to be exposed to smoke.
I'm not a smoker and hate second hand smoke myself.

Well the move to ban smoking in car containing people under 16 is under full swing in Victoria (over here in Oz). The government is really trying to get the new laws passed. And I reckon it's great. But I think they should take it one step further, banning smoking while driving outright.
Now before the smokers in here start a lynch mob against me for that suggestion, let me explain why I think it should be done. Mobile phones have been proven to be a great distraction whilst driving (as bad as driving while drunk), so how dangerous would someone be while fumbling around for a cigarette, then trying to find the lighter, then trying to successfully get it alight. That's a lot of attention diverted from the road! Plus, if someone drops the lit ciggie they HAVE to find it, making them look away from the road AGAIN! That just has death written all over it!
But I think it should be banned in all public placed, with the exception of specially set-aside areas. Unfair to do this to a legal substance you say? It would be no different that the rules that govern alcohol; another legal substance... I mean, why should I have to cop a lungful of dirty, smelly, carcinogenic chemicals everytime I walk by a building's door?
OK, I think everyone knows exactly where I stand now ;D lol

Keep away from the doors? Why shouldn't we smoke. I've gone a good few hours without lighting up, that ideas made me need one... I blame you for the lung cancer! Only jokes

Has anyone here ever heard of ecigarettes? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/E-cigaretteWell, I'm not trying to encourage smoking or anything, but I think that any smoker should check these things out. What they do (basically) is supply the smoker with a vapor form of nicotine that the body absorbs through the lungs. This is great because not only will it satisfy a smoker's craving for nicotine, but it doesn't give them all the added poisons that are commonly found in cigarettes. I think these things hold potential, but how well could something called an electronic cigarette catch on?

It's funny: I commented 7 years ago about ecigs and how I thought it had potential but was doubtful. I now know people from school and from work who smoke ecigs or vaporized nicotine, and they seem happy about it. I was in the room with someone who was smoking one, and while there was certainly an odor, it wasn't anywhere near as bad as if they were smoking real tobacco. Technology and policy has come a long way since this thread was last posted in, I wonder if people's opinions have changed or gotten stronger since then.
SciShow on Youtube made a good episode about ecigs if you want to see more (second half of the video):

Look at this old, old thread x'D The ancients rise!
But while it's here I may as well comment on it- I'm not a smoker (and never will be, lol) but I have been around people who are. And whenever I visit a place where people smoke, I get the absolute worst migraine. Often to the point of nausea.
The fact is, smoking doesn't just affect the person who is holding the cigarette, it affects those around them just as much. I think restricting people from smoking in enclosed public places is a good idea, because different people react to secondhand smoke differently. For all you know, the person next to you could have asthma that has a potential to be set off by the smoke, or, like me, suffer from headaches when exposed to the smell. Not to mention if there are children around, you're putting them in direct contact with something that is dangerous to their development.
I wouldn't tell people they can't smoke at all (even though I personally think you probably shouldn't, period), but it all comes down to respect, you know? Do you respect the person sitting beside you enough to not disturb them with your habit? It doesn't take much to just head outside where people can walk away if they don't like it, and not be stuck with it lingering in a place where they're trying to enjoy a drink or a meal or a show, etc.
