i guess a number of us here have heard about the Trotter family from Peckham.
Only Fools & Horses is my favourite sitcom in this country starring David Jason as Derek "DelBoy" Trotter, Nicholas Lyndhurst as Rodney Trotter, the late Leonard Pearce as Grandad and the late Buster Merryfield as Uncle Albert.
of course the cast are supported by Roger Lloyd Pack as Trigger, John Challis as Boycie, Paul Barber as Denzil.
a number of us will all have our favourite moments from the show with my all time favourite moments being in no particular order:-
the bus blowing up in The Jolly Boys Outing the chandelier moment in A Touch Of Glass DelBoy's pratfall throught the bar in Yuppy Love the self inflating sex dolls with the explosive gas in Danger UXD the batman and robin moment in Heroes & Villains the moment with Uncle Albert in Rodney Come Home any moment where Trigger calls Rodney "Dave"

Well I can say that I'm an Only Fools fan, a really funny but classic sitcom.
Rather than make a thread of it's own, I wondered if anyone had watched the prequel: Rock & Chips. I happened to watch it, and I thought it was quite good. Although I'm not really a fan of actually telling a Backstory to a show or film because I feel it ruins your imagination of what things were like before the show or film started, but this was pulled off well.
It was a good choice to have Nicholas Lyndhurst play Freddie because we all know Rodney actually looks exactly like his Dad, I think the cast of the young Del and Denzil were pulled off well. You can actually see them growning into David Jason and Paul Barber quite easily, Phil Daniels pulled off Grandad well. I'm sure Leonard Pearce would be quite impressed to see what his character would have looked like in 1960.
I can really say much else, but they pulled off getting the show into the 1960s off pretty well with how much things have evolved in London since those days.

i thought the prequel was brilliant so i would really like to see a series follow on after it... it was well written, i wish there had been a bit more to the jolly boy's outing scene but alas that wouldn't happen as dreamland isn't open anymore still it was an excellent program and freddie the frog was just as i hoped he would be... i can't help but feel the only thing missing from boycie was his trademark laugh

This is the best show John Sullivan has ever made. He had made 7 brilliant series and a load of hilarious Specials.
But the requel 'Rock and Chips' was I thought absolute RUBBISH! Too much swearing and it had not one thing funny in it. There were some characters in it you could just recognise and Grandad's first name was wrong as well. He is called Edward Trotter not Ted. Tv.com (TV Tome) says his name was Edward Trotter.

Madness I do have to state that the have not got his name wrong Ted is short for Edward, so it makes complete sense As for Rock and Chips, i didn't know anything about it until I read on here so intend to catch it on the iplayer at somepoint!

Lots of references to only fools and the odd gag plonked in everywhere. Loved the nylon/static shocks gags, Joan's misuse of french and the sausage being thrown out the bus window. That being said, it's not perfect. I think Boycie should have a superiority complex already and wear a V neck sweater(to match his future waistcoats). Trigger isn't as deadpan as I'd like him to be. Delboy should be cultivating his catchphrases by now and be running very humorous subplots. Oh never mind. John's probably got a season coming to do that.

Joan & Reg Trotter's lives. Trigger, Boycie, Denzil and of course Del as teens. etc etc. the only thing they DIDN'T show was how the trotters got their signature three wheeler. and how fitting is it that they brought back Nicholas Lyndhurst to play his own characters dad! all in all, i wish this wasn't a one off. but hey! not everyone has the same opinion. 5/5

I always enjoyed Only Fools and Horses, for several reasons:
1) The whole hooky street concept: the idea that whilst what Del and Rodney were doing was technically legal, it would be seriously frowned upon and still considered illegal.
2) The awkward family dynamics: Del, Rodney, Grandad, and Uncle Albert. Had these three (since Grandad and Albert were never shown together) not been related, they'd have never got along!
3) Boycie: the member of 'the gang' who believes himself better and superior to everyone else, when he's no different.
4) Del's verbal destruction of the French Language.
5) The fact that it when it did get serious (e.g. Cassandra's miscarriage), it did it perfectly.
6) The sheer bad luck of the Trotters: i.e. the whole chandelier incident!
and finally 7) It was just so funny!

Just when you thought we couldn't get enough of our bereavement's over Nicholas Courtney and Elisabeth Sladen's deaths, now John Sullivan is gone! Yes it is true and I just cannot believe it, all the legends of the 70's and 80's are going. Sullivan died of a short illness of viral pneumonia, aged 64. R.I.P. John Sullivan, you are " Luvvly Jubbly".....

As David Jason has stated on the BBC: "This country has lost one of it's best Comedy Writers."
R.I.P John Sullivan, your work shall always be watched and your legacy never forgotten.

You made your mark in history John Sullivan: now rest in peace.

I was shocked when I heard about Roger's sad passing away. He really made me laugh on 'Only Fools and Horses', his lines always gave me a good laugh. There's no one else who can play Trigger or Owen, but him. He also did very well as the Cyber Controller from 'Rise of the Cybermen' and 'The Age of Steel' episodes from 'Doctor Who'. Goodbye Roger Lloyd Pack. You will be dearly missed by all those who love you .

I am quite content with this being a one-off return. If it had been a full episode, it would be more susceptible to criticism, and of course would lead to the plethora of 'it should have ended in 1996' comments. By writing a short one-off sketch, we get the short burst of nostalgia we're longing for, and a nice tribute to one of the greatest writers ever to grace our screens.
I won't write it off just because Beckham's making an appearance (as seems to be the trend on some forums), though I hope his appearance is limited to a brief cameo; I'm most looking forward to some good ol' banter between Del and Rodney.
____
RIP to Roger Lloyd Pack; he knew how to play a comic idiot and make him a believable character (which is the most important part). In doing so, he provided many of the biggest laughs in the show; I can still remember my Dad being in stitches at the "Mozart's Kareoke version" joke.

Currently bingewatching this series as i brought the complete collection from CEX a few days ago and had a few DVDs beforehand. It's so addicting; brilliantly acted and written, Jason, Lyndhurst and Sullivan were and still are quite the dream team. My mother uses the term 'Wally' quite a lot and having seen this i now know where she probably gets it from

Great sitcom, I especially liked the earlier series with Lennard Pearce (Grandad) in, but also very much enjoyed the later ones from the mid 80's when Buster Merryfield (Uncle Albert) arrived on the scene, my favourite special is probably The Jolly Boy's Outing, followed by To Hull & Back & of course the unforgettable Heroes & Villains with it's famous Batman & Robin homage, great series all round.
Also if you haven't already checked them out, then I thoroughly recommend reading Only Fools & Horses: The Official Inside Story by Steve Clark, My Life by David Jason (both available in paperback) & the more recently published Only Fools & Horses: The New York, Paris & Peckham Archives (a large hardback book)

shazamproductions.co.uk/a-message-from-jim-sullivan/A musical of the series is set to be made, and performed early next year. I'm a bit indifferent about the idea. It sounds fun and since it's being written by Jim Sullivan it will likely be quite faithful to the source material. Some things though; - I wonder whether it will be an adaption of the series, and feature iconic moments such as the chandelier or the bar fall, or if it'll be a completely fresh storyline. Personally I hope it's the latter, I'd rather see something new as apposed to the same notable moments rehashed by impersonators (since Jason and Lyndhurst aren't going to be taking part, apparently) - Would it feature Uncle Albert or Grandad? If they adapt the series they could easily show the funeral and then Uncle Albert moving in. Also curious as to whether they'll go with the Trotters having a family from the later series/specials or play it safe and just have Del, Rodney and Grandad/Albert like the earlier series. I can imagine they'd go with the latter since that's the set up many people prefer (although i personally didn't mind the brothers being family men but that's my opinion) - I will personally walk out of that theatre if there isn't a song dedicated to Del trying to sell dodgy gear down the market like in the series. Seriously, that should happen As a huge fan of the series I'm just really curious as to how it could potentially pan out. Hopefully it's a success.

The word 'indifferent' sums up my thoughts on the matter too.
The show was always meant to feel very real and grounded, which you can’t really capture in a broad, theatrical performance. Secondly, no disrespect to his sons but I feel the characters have never really worked when not being written by John Sullivan (wasn't too bowled over by either the Sport Relief sketch or The Green Green Grass). His work was so close to perfect that I don't see what can be gained from writing without his input.
I’m not too fussed about them recasting the characters – that’s inevitable with the original actors all being too old to play the characters (or no longer with us), and it worked for Fawlty Towers on stage (so I’ve heard). But I agree, if they want to make the show stand out from the TV series they should try and write new scenarios to avoid feeling like an impressions show. I know I was initially worried about Rock and Chips for the same reason and they turned out really well.
Not dead against the idea but I struggle to see it working to be honest. The Father Ted musical currently in production sounds a much better idea - the original writers are writing it, and Ted was always a sillier type of show so I can see this transferring much better to the stage.
