It's simple, we all have that one game where you were hooked on it because of a great first level. There are plenty of us here who's had a long gaming history, and I'm sure everyone had at least one favorite first. Time to get things rolling: Medal of Honor: Frontline Sure, any game based off of World War II can get pretty epic, but when I started this game, I felt this one was above the rest. You start out on a boat, in the middle of a battle and about to reach the shore. You see your comrades looking nervous, or throwing up , as planes and bullets fly overhead, some of them bombing boats a few feet away. The Commander tells everyone that there's 10 seconds left before they hit the shore. Then...BOOM...your boat's been bombed, some of your fellow soldiers are killed, you pull out your rifle... and the fight begins. Metroid Prime Don't laugh, but Metroid can get pretty scary, in fact it could stop you from playing it at night. Metroid Prime's first level is no exception, what got me was the overall creepiness on this level. Your on a Space Pirate ship that seems abandones, it's nearly dark, even on the inside, and as you explore the ship you see dead or dying pirates everywhere. The music doesn't help either, it was so well done, it will give you chills at one point or another. That's all for me at the monent, I'd like to hear about you guys so...discuss. ;D

Okay, Left 4 Dead. The first level, No Mercy, is extremely scary. I mean, I had a witch spawn right in front of me, and I was crying, before I realised to push Bill into it (I was playing as Louis ) The game has it's funny moments, like at the Church where the survivor is shouting and screaming. I'd have to say that a bad piece of advice is to get all of your team around a boomer and fire a shotgun

Hope I'm not copying Arlesdale92 in my choice, but I'm going to say "Medal of Honor: Allied Assault."
I played the "Operation: Lighting the Torch" mission plenty of times. I don't know if it was because of the action or the great music, but that level was one of the most fun.

Well, I suppose that, in the world of racing games, a Demo Disc counts as a first level...and it was a Gran Turismo Demo that got me.
It was High Speed Ring, with two cars available, a Chevrolet Corvette, and a Honda NSX type S-Zero. It was at that point that I learned that, to be fast, one must also learn to brake. I also distinctly remember the NSX being VERY hard for grade school hands to handle. It spent more time doing donuts than going straight.
I was hooked. I've had every main game thru 4, as well as Tourist Trophy. and I love. :3

This isn't so much as a first level, but rather the first act. The end of the first act of Call of Duty 4, to be precise.
OK, so near the end of the first act, my character was ordered to retrieve a downed pilot. With only ninety seconds, I race to the downed heli, grabbed her from the cockpit and hightailed back to the SeaKnight heli, all the while enemy troops are shooting me in the back. So I brought the pilot back and fought off the remaining enemies as our helicopter takes off into the sunset. All seemed to end well when... a nuclear bomb suddenly explodes. The shock wave decimates the city, knocking out every remaining helicopter from the sky, including the one I'm in.
Needless to say, the heli crashes and everything blacks out. I thought that was the end until the next level. My character comes to in the wreckage and I slowly crawl out of my downed helicopter. I falter as I exit the SeaKnight. What I see is utter destruction. Buildings crumbles, thousands of my comrades lay dead around me, fires crackle, the sky blood red from dust and sand and smoke, an eerie wind that forever blows over a scorched landscape and, in the distance, is a sinister and dark mushroom cloud that just seems to rise higher and higher.
All is quiet except for the occasional radio transmission. I look ahead and I see there is a playground ahead of me. It is almost untouched by the explosion, in a strange juxtaposition to the devastation around me. It is eerily reminiscent of the opening sequence to Terminator 2. I stagger toward it and I hear something. The chatter of little children. But I see no-one. All I hear are ghosts. After a minute, my character finally succumbs to his injuries and his vision whites out. End of Act 1.
The whole thing left me speechless. It was the most awe-inspiring and horrific levels I've ever played and one I'll never forget.

Several stick out: SNES: Starwing - the music, the graphics, the immense havoc [giant robots, killer pillars, radio-pulse beeping flying saucers]...and the infernal Attack Carrier. This was at 7yrs old. No wonder I am the monster I am today. Super Mario World - Yoshi's Island lvl 2. For some reason we always played this one before lvl 1 and the Yellow Switch Palace. Emerald green hues, giant hills, jolly ching-ling music. Oh happy days. N64: F-Zero X: Mute City 1, teaing round in the Golden Fox. Teehee, I opened my birthday present two days early. Starfox 64/Lylat Wars: Corneria. Again. "This is what the SNES SHOULD have been like!" as my eyeballs bled for joy. Havoc intensified. Crew members even more snappy and stupid [save me Fox!] ....and would you believe that that bloody Attack Carrier was back?! Lusy valleys, sprawling glistening seas...wootage. Gamecube: Starfox Adventures - Krazoa Palace. If that huge place was a mere starter/training, wtf was the rest of the game going to be like?! Zelda: Twilight Princess. The opening village. Lush. <3

I have another one, this one's fairly recent.
Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty: Oh yes, there's a reason this series deserves all the praise it gets. It's just does everything right. Anyway I'm talking specifically about the game's opening, the Tanker Chapter. The only time in the game where you play as Solid Snake, and it's just epic. He's all alone one a freighter with hostile enemies, armed with just a tranquilizer pistol.
The enemies are pretty smart, if Snake is seen by them, they will call for backup and search for you. It's definately a test of your skills, having to sneak by everyone, having a limited amount of ammo (the tranquilizer is only temprary too), having to solve a few bomb related puzzles... In the end, you have to take some pictures of Metal Gear RAY while the U.S. Marines are there presenting RAY...
The atmosphere adds on to this, whether your on the stormy deck of the ship, or in the dark corridors, just a great time to have playing it. Truely a great experience.
That's the end of my long rant anyway, although it may look like spoilers for everyone who's never played, keep in mind this is only the beginning of the game.

Super Mario 64 - When I first wandered the grounds of Peach's Castle. It was absolutely unreal... guess it was mostly down to the fact that I was playing Mario in 3D for the first time... truly unforgettable experience.
