There's also just the "Metal Gear" games for the NES.
I love these games, albeit they can be a bit challenging at times. I've still yet to play MGS4, but I've heard great reviews about it, not to mention IGN gave it a 10, which is essentially a once-in-a-lifetime occurrence.
As for the earlier ones, MGS and MGS2 were both great. MGS3 was also a masterpiece. I recommend these to any gamers who enjoy ACTIONY SH'MUPS.

Yeah, I've heard wonderful stuff about MGS4. Personally, the original MGS1 is my favourite. I remember I tried to play Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake years ago on an emulator, and didn't like them much. The PS1 game is an all-time classic, I think. Good story, good gameplay, music, characters, everything. 10/10 in my opinion. The second one was just as fun to play, but the story was a little overly-complicated and many of the new characters weren't that interesting. And the third one is way too hard for me; I'm hopeless without the radar, and I've barely gotten to the first boss since it came out.

MGS is one of the best series to grace the PlayStation family. It has all the components of a great game, ingenious game play (which completely changed my opinions of cardboard boxes), a fantastic and iconic score, a brilliant (and mind boggling, definitely in in case of MGS2) storyline and an emotive. When I came across the series after borrowing MGS2 off a friend when I was 13. It blew me away. I had never seen a game like it before. MGS4 was a dominating factor in deciding to go with the PS3, and when it came out...it was 8 hours non stop gaming lasting until 4 in the morning that I called quits and went to bed...only to resume a few hours later and keep going (btw, d**n you for getting in my way you stupid job! That was 8 hours of work that could have been spent playing video games) until 1am in the next morning. And I'll be frank, it was pure fanboy glee and screaming when I saw... *The cut scenes finally have a pause button! Praise the lord! No longer will there be a 30 minute cut scene vital to the story and I'm desperate for the loo the whole time! * The whole tapping the X button to see flashbacks * Johnny hiding in that oil barrel * Raiden and Vamp's battle * What we thought was Big Boss's body * EVA aka Big Momma revealing that she is was Snake's mother and bringing out her old pistol and the motorbike * The return to Shadow Moses. That whole act was made of pure win! * Physco Mantis's appearance * The final battle with Liquid * Snake committing suicide (or so we thought) * The Epilogue I'll admit this, when the credits started rolling, I was on the verge of tears. To see the conculsion of story spanning 80 years come to a close and knowing the Snake is in his final days... Without doubt, MGS4 is a beacon to those who want to make video games worthy of the title of: Best Video Game Ever

MSG4 was amazing. As a fan of all the old games this was pure gold for a sequel. Psycho Mantis returning was definitely a big thing for me. Damn what a game.

I was really disapointed in the 4th title of the series. I luckly purchased it for £20 as it's on the PS3 Platinum range. It's story is excellent but I feel the game is let down due to the lack of game play as best part of the cut scenes are really long and don't give you a chance to do most of the things that you are able to in previous titles. I'm not saying I hate the game as it's story was a brilliant closure to MGS but I do acctually want to play a game not just sit back and watch scene after scene for hours on end. I still think the first title of Metal Gear Solid on Play Station is still the best in my opinion. To be honest it did explain all those plotholes in the first three, minus Rising and Peace Walker for obvious reasons. I'd agree with the first Solid being the best, but Snake Eater deserves some praise too. It's definately between those two.
