Jahn led Hack, Judas and Sapphire to the front of the tavern. A crush of people were fighting to escape, but Falzynne's men had barracaded the door closed effectively so that they were trapped inside.
"All right, all right everyone, out of the way..." Jahn said, starting to push through the crowd. "Oy, we're here to save you! Move it!"
It was useless.
"MOVE!"
The crowd stopped dead.
"That's more like it," Jahn grunted, "right you three, with me."
Hack, Judas and Sapphire followed accordingly, and watched as Jahn thumped on the front door.
"Not used to someone basing a door to get out of somewhere..." Hack muttered.
Judas stepped forward. "If I may, Jahn," he said, "could I possibly try to freeze the door and weaken its structure?"
"Sure," Jahn shrugged. "This ain't budging at the moment."
Judas beckon Sapphire forward, explained his plan, then together the wizards chanted an incantation in a language Jahn didn't understand. He caught what he thought were the words for wood and ice, so expected pretty good results.
"Try now," Judas said.
Jahn did so. SMASH - the door shattered into splinters. No sooner had this happened than Jahn found himself on the end of six archers, all with bows aimed at him. This unnerved him, but not so much as the man he now stood face to face with.
"What's going on?" asked a man in the crowd.
Jahn ignored him in all but action - he waved Hack back inside to talk to them, and if possible marshal them towards Deck's group and the rear exit.
Deck stole a look out the window. Flark - no such luck as to a gap. The whole tavern was surrounded. "Come on! No time to lose..." he urged, chivvying the family outside the room and passing them to Anselm. "I don't understand," said the father.
"You don't have to. Just go! Now!" Deck said sharply. Anselm escorted the family to the rear door, but no further. Rather, he simply waited out of sight patiently whilst Falzynne's men circled the tavern.
"Corn!" Deck called.
"Don't call me..."
"We don't have time for that, Corn!" Deck almost shouted. "Go to the front - tell Sapphire to cast some spell that will let us know when there's gap enough for everyone to get through here."
"And how will that gap come about?"
"Through Jahn and Hack fighting of course! Flark, for a doctor you're not very smart, are you?"
Cornelius ignored this, and made his way to the front as requested. Now, Deck knew, as he continued to wake families and hurry them towards the exits, it was simply a matter of time...
