Wow, its been over 8 years since I posted in this thread and a lot has happened.
Firstly I'd just like to say something, having started doing research into rock and heavy metal music videos - I often myself wondering: "Do you always need a music video with the band or artist actually playing their instruments in a particular location and what have you that isn't a live show." Granted I know that money is still tough for many at present, but as a writer I tend to wonder why you can't comeback up with a simple story and tell the theme of the song through that (true, easier said and done - all depends what the song is about and etc.).
I only say this, because there's a few music videos I've seen over the years where some of the band members in a music video often portray characters in a story surrounding the theme of the song and I often say to myself: "Why can't all bands do this? Just let the story tell the theme of the song, rather than see them do what they do best and if you wanted to see what they do best then see them at a live show than via a music video." Granted, I know that there are bands that wouldn't want to portray characters - which is cool, that's why you cast actors.
I don't mean to make this sound like a downer, but when you start researching into music videos and come-up with ideas of your own that aren't over the top - you tend to wonder why many don't just go along with that kind of trend without having to always do the same old thing over and over again. Its probably just me, I don't know if others feel the same.
Secondly, I have seen some really interesting music videos in the last few years - one of my favourites being Storm the Sorrow by Epica:
