As there's plenty of fans of this show on the forum - quite frequently discussed in the 'Anime' thread, I thought this show deserved a thread to itself. The first episode I remember seeing was 'The Punchy Pokemon' on New Years Day 2000. For a while after that, I was hooked on the show. I watched from the early days through to the end of the Orange League. I continued with Johto for a little while, but more important interests gave me less time to watch it. Never mind, I still watch the odd episode or two whenever I get the chance. Even if it has taken something of a downturn in the Hoenn series, I suppose it could be worse - it is one of the better things on kids TV these days - better than Lazytown and all that other junk on TV.
Discuss away!

Regarding the TV series (anime), I have never been interested in it. Even at the time when everyone in the country seemed to be going "Yay Pock-ay-man rooles!" I never gave a monkey's about the show - I was just interested in the Pokemon themselves. Each one had some kind of appeal and was based on a specific animal/ object, like Spinarak being the Happy Face Spider and Huntail being the Gulper Eel - all this made it so much more likable. The anime I found to be too cheesy, and the games I thought were too repetitive, so I never really bothered with Pokemon as a franchise. Each Pokemon pretty much replaces any animal you would ever meet or see in the wild, and I expect that future generations of Pokemon games will introduce more (looking forward to some kind of lion). In fact, if some kind of Pokemon world existed, I could envision myself as some David Attenborough-style explorer, filming different Pokemon all over the many regions. My all-time favourite Pokemon type would have to be the Ghost, for obvious reasons. Second favourite would have to be water due to the massive amount of Pokemon within the family, and a toss-up between Dark and Poison come next, again, for obvious reasons. My favourite Pokemon is Slowpoke, I've always liked it and I don't really know why. It's probably because it leads such a marvellously uninteresting lifestyle - that, and it has major comic potential on the internet, as you might have seen before.

Hmmmm... I prefer the old series and Game Boy games any day. I remember getting a Game Boy Colour and Pokemon Blue Version for my twelfth birthday, and the Limited Yellow Edition later on. My favourite type of Pokemon would have to be fire - hence the reason I started with Charmander. Mind you, Ice and Electric were equally good, too.
Perhaps this should be a General Discussion thread for Pokemon, not just for the TV Series, but for the games and franchise as well...

Wouldn't this be better off in the Anime thread:-/?

As Stuart has said though, there has been enough Pokemon related discussion in the past to warrant it's own thread - at least for the time being. If you check the earlier pages of the Anime thread, we were discussing Team Rocket's finer points at length for quite some time

Depends. This thread could be used for the games?
As for me? I gave up after Gen 1. I still have my God Dragonite, but know I can't take it on to Pearl and Diamond.

Meh my overall review of the franchise: (I'll remove this and post this in the Anime thread if need be ) The Anime: I loved the first 80 episodes of the series, and downloaded it the first chance I got. Highlights are of couurse Ash's Charizard and the match against Richie. I remember watching the entire Johto series, but I died away from it quickly. It was only a year ago since my friends convinced me to download the enitre series, so I did. I'm making my way through the Diamond and Pearl saga. I have all the episodes but the recent, which is downloading right now. As for the films, I have all the Japanese Uncut dubs on my PC, and the english dubs on DVD. Overall, not bad. One good thing is the japanese movie posters. The artwork and picture is epic, and looks good on a wall. THE GAMES: Major fan of the first 2, including green version. Red, Blue, and green were all good. Man, the good days. Missingno. I played and beat Yellow, and began playing Stadium 1 and 2, Snap (Easiest Game Ever), and Puzzle League, which was really quite enjoyable. I was REALLY happy when I got gold and it's guide book on the release date. I bought Silver, beated it and Gold, and traded over so I could complete my pokedexes. I used a cheating device to gain Celebi. Cyrstal was soon out, and I managed to beat it ass well. (Interesting story twists here.) So, Ruby and Emerald came out, and I had my Sp, so I played through both and Emerald, and managed to get 100% in all of them. Overall good games. Teams Magma and Aqua were quite interesting. Fire Red and Leaf Green were both enjoyable as well. Ok, the Gamecube games were sweet. the first, pokemon colleseium was REALLY good, Xd was an amazing sequel as well. So, Diamond and Pearl, both beat fully. Managed to get the exclusive pokemon through action replay. Darkrai baby. The Wii game is fun too. OVERALL: The franchise is fun and enjoyable, but dies down. When D and P came out, it sold 4 million in japan on the first day! I had to buy it and a DS lite, so I enjoyed the game overall. Best part was that my sister left her not yet started game out, and I grabbed a Chimchar and Piplup for my team. Overall, good concept.

I've been a fan of Pokemon for as long as I can remember, but I stopped watching it at the episode "Going,Going, Yawn" when my Telewest set stopped showing Sky One and the other channels. Call me crazy, but I still like the TV Series. Although, I do admit that the voice changes are a bit odd.
I own All the GBA games, Colosseum and Channel and Pearl and Diamond.

Okay, what are your favourite episodes from the Pokemon TV series, fans? Here's mine:
The Punchy Pokemon - the first episode I saw of the series. Good fighting sequences at the P1 tournament, for one, and Ash's Primeape proves its value. Of course, the battling brings Rebecca's father down a peg or two, but this was the highlight, after Team Rocket steal the Hitmonlee and tie up its owner in the toilets...
Jessie: "Thank you, please remain seated." Lol!
Sparks Fly For Magnemite - the argument between Ash and Nurse Joy was a good chuckle, but there were also some dramatic moments in the ep, especially when Joy shows them the Pokemon in intensive care.
The Tower of Terror - an all-round laugh, especially when Ash and Pikachu's spirits are taken from their bodies, easily one of the most hilarious sequences in the series.
Pikachu's Goodbye - this brought a tear or two to my eyes when I first saw it, especially with the song 'The Time Has Come' being played. It was this song, also, that was used in our 'Percy's Big Mistake' redub. Overall, a very emotional episode, especially at the end. Just goes to show you can't split Ash and Pikachu.
Electric Shock Showdown - A very intense battle between Pikachu and Raichu. It did well to show Pikachu's determined side.
Riddle Me This - Blaine proves to be an interesting character with his love for riddles. The battle - in spite of Charizard's disobedience - was great, especially with the almost literal cliffhanger.
Volcanic Panic - Charizard redeems himself here - at least for the time being. A superb battle sequence with Charizard and Magmar, especially with the Seismic Toss sequence, one of the series' best moments. It's a pity we didn't see more of Blaine in later episodes.
The Battle of the Badge: Terrific battle scenes at Viridian Gym, especially with Mewtwo's cameo. And boy, Ash gives Team Rocket a trouncing to remember.
Pokemon, I choose you!: The first episode of the series and, though starting a little slowly, the scene in the forest was dramatic.
I have more, but I'll list 'em later, got to sort out my TV license for Uni.

I'm pretty much done with Pokemon. It lasted on me for a good while though (into the Ruby/Sapphire era), and I still like to find out what new pokemon are coming out for the new games. Although the newer pokemon seem a bit too abstract or humanlike for my liking.

Browsing an anime board today, someone said the following:
"What annoys me about the Pokemon series is that we're always following Ash and his Level 300 Pikachu around. Ash becomes quite annoying quite quickly (for me anyway) and I'm quite tired of seeing Pikachu kick the ass of everything it meets, including those that are supposed to be immune to electricity. A better idea would've been to have a new trainer every now and again, perhaps even inbetween regions so that Ash could still be a main character."
Agree? Disagree? Y? N? Que? Discuss.

I don't think we should see the back of Ash and Pikachu - it's always been about them. If anything, Misty should be returned to the series full time, and Team Rocket should take some temporary retirement. Heck, Cassidy and Butch would make good replacement villains - they seem more threatening than Jessie and James for one thing. Perhaps they should gave Jessie and James the boot, fight by themselves for a while, and have Jessie and James rejoin them at a later date - pretty much like what happened with Lord Zedd and Rita Repulsa.
I find myself agreeing with Chris that the show should have finished after Ash won the Orange League. On the other hand, I feel he should have won the Johto League and wrapped it up there. Or would it have seemed open-ended?

Or would it have seemed open-ended? Considering the way new leagues and Pokemon were introduced afterwards, it probably would seem open-ended. But then, clearly a new trainer could've started in the Hoenn league, even running into Sinnoh? Perhaps the show would lack in quality thereafter considering Ash is synonymous with the anime but personally a little break from him and Team Rocket would've been better.

I used to collect the cards, although I do not like them now. I found these on Ebay: Weird Huh? Anyways, at my primary school, we had a mini GBC pokemon league. We had 4 Gym leaders, and if you won you got a certificate. This was year 6, so we all had Gold and Silver. I remeber I was a leader, and I specialised in Dark Pokemon. My team consisted of Two Tyranitars, an Umbreon, a Houndoom and it's child Houndoor, and a Murkcrow. Sometimes Houndoor was replaced with Pikachu, for a suprise. Only two people out of 15 managed to beat me. I was really proud.

If you check the earlier pages of the Anime thread, we were discussing Team Rocket's finer points at length for quite some time And with good reason - Team Rocket are awesome. The chant gets old quick though. I watched the first 3 (?) series - well, up to Orange League anyway. Seen a bit of the Max/May stuff, but not a lot. I reckon it was better when there weren't so many Pokemon to catch - more characters means more work and not necessarily more fun (game or TV show). I'm a nostalgist at heart about a lot of things. My favourite Pokemon has always been Squirtle. He's so cute and fun.

More fav's from me:
The Water Flowers of Cerulean City - Quite a good episodes. Misty never ceases to crack me up with her attempts to bunk off from Cerulean Gym.
Pokemon Scent-Sation - Introducing my favourite gym leader, Erika. This episode pretty much had a mixture of everything - comedy with Ash's masquerading as a girl, drama with the battle scene, and suspense in the fire scene.
Charizard Chills - Charizard finally learns to obey Ash, and produces a good battle near the end. It's a pity he didn't last much longer with Ash and co. They should have kept him on to expand him a bit.
Hello Pumello - Like Chris, I feel the show should have ended here, in spite of the possibility of it seeming open-ended. This was one of Ash's greatest victories to date, if not his best.

I have watched this for years now. It was the first anime series I ever seen. The first episode I have seen over 8 years ago was Pokemon Emergency on UPN 20. It was amazing, but I also liked Digimon, but now I like both series now. But I hope to see The rest of Master quest and Advanced episodes really soon.

I used to play the TCG religiously. I think I stopped right before the Team Rocket expansion came out.
I remember having a deck that revolved around bringing Dragonite out, and I remained undefeated at the Pokemon League at Toys R Us for several months.
I remember Charizard was the big card to have at the time. I never had it, but I did pull two Blastoises and two Venusaurs from booster packs within a few week's time. It was really weird. I was hoping the same would happen with Charizard, but alas, it did not.
