As to the original SIF thread, you can post odd facts, news stories or the like which are guaranteed to make one have a jolly good laugh or stop and think.

anyone ever hear the rumour that if you play pink floyd's Dark Side of the Moon and the score to the wizard of oz, they'll match up?
and also ever hear about subliminal messages in music? I've heard about them, and herd samples of them. Most I feel are fake, but I will admit there's definately some real ones out there (a pink floyd one for sure, an enimum one, led zepplin, and a few more). Most are disturbing to me (satanic messages, sex messages, and other disgusting things).

Ah, subliminal messages in music. Even the Beatles experienced it. If you play some of their songs backwards, it'll talk about the whole "Paul is Dead" urban legend.

Most of those rumours are just urban legends- things created by concerned parent groups and suchlike to justify their dislike of something their children are into. The song 'Louie, Louie' was actually investigated by the FBI, who felt sure that there must have been something suspect about it. They spent hours going over the song, playing it in reverse, slowed down, speeded up, edited but, surprise surprise, they found nothing. The reason for its uncanny appeal was... that it's a good song.

Quick thingy for anyone planning to discuss rumours and myths: snopes.comSmashing site for proving rumours true or false. The "Dark Side Of The Moon"/Wizard Of Oz thing, I think, gets an "Unsure" rating.

Has anyone heard the rumor that if you eat cheese before you go to bed, you will have nightmares?

That's rubbish! I never really have nightmares so often, but I eat cheese sometimes before beddy-bos for me.

In Chicago, Illanios, it is illegal to buy cornflakes on a Sunday. There are quite a few of these odd laws, and they can usually be explained by one of the following: 1. By simply posting one interpretation of a law. So, for example, if there is a law against cruelty to animals in Texas, then one could say, "In Texas it is illegal to throw monkeys out of windows on Thursday". Technically it's true... By the same token, one might say that the Chicago law is that technically the laws against Sunday trading have never been repealed. 2. The law comes along as a result of some kind of case involving said items. I have various friends studying law and I myself have worked in various law firms, and you'd be surprised what comes up. Re Snopes, I love that site, it's filled in many hours of boredom at work. Their conclusion on the Wizard of Oz thing was, I think, that there was a certain amount of marrying up, but they couldn't decide whether it was deliberate or coincidence. And about the cheese, my understanding is that you're bound to have a disturbed night if you're suffering from indigestion, which in turn could result from eating rich or fatty foods (like cheese) before lying down. For the record, I carried out some experiments in eating cheese before bed, and I didn't have nightmares. I did once have a nightmare about cheese, but that's another story. This is quite odd. Forbes Magazine have compiled a list of the top 15 richest fictional characters. It's quite amusing, and has one or two surprises... www.forbes.com/2005/11/29/forbes-fictional-rich_cx_mn_de_05fict15land.html

Yeah, it's best to avoid the Photo Gallery... one of the pictures (have a look around if you're brave, try and guess which one - I'm not posting it for the welfare and sanity of the forums) made me shudder VIOLENTLY. (NB: It wasn't one of the gruesome ones, them I can stand ) ---- An odd thing I found out today: Orchids are bisexual. I never knew, personally.

The freakiest thing that's ever happened to me was when I was about nine. My pet fish died during really hot weather, it was floating belly up and everything. I was really upset, and for some reason I thought that cooling it down would bring it back to life.... I put it in a jug of water and left it in the fridge for two hours, and when I came back it was swimming around like nothing had happened! I swear this is true!

Here's an odd one for you Englishmen out there:-
In York, if you shoot a Scotsman, on a Sunday, before noon, with a bow and arrow, it is perfectly legal as a)defence of the city and b)bow practice. Kill a Scot at 11:59am and you're a legal patriot practising. Kill at 12:01pm and you're nicked sonny-jim.

Obviously some throwback from the days of olde following Bannockburn in 1314... Just so you all know we're not holding a grievance over Culloden... Just plans to rebuild Hadrian's Wall, and electrify it...bring back hanging for anyone who manages to cross it...
