It gets worse... Sonic Fans threaten to boycott Sonic 4Here's the quotation specifically from the so-called "fans": There's only one sentence I want to pick out of this. Look at the underlined section. Now look at this picture. Sonic fanboys are ridiculously stupid. In addition - here's a thought. Boycott Sonic 4 - and then buy Sonic 1 or 2, which are MORE EXPENSIVE, online? Sega still gets their money. The cycle of stupidity continues...

Personally, I'll buy Sonic 4 just because I like Sonic games. I agree the 3D games aren't exactally brilliant, but they've had some good ones, like Sonic Adventure 2: Battle, in spite of the dodgy camera......
It's the game they asked for - just plain Sonic, with no gimmicks such as a Werehog or a knight.... and they boycott it? Meh, Werehog would have been better without the Werehog, and Sonic 4 would be better without Sonic?

Hate to break it to you, Simon, but the online Sonic fandom has been a hotbed of insanity and idiocy for the better part of a decade now. I simply cannot fathom the minds of these hardcore old-schoolers, which seem to be permanently stuck in 1994. I agree the last decade has seen a couple of very crappy games and a bunch more mediocre ones (I thought 06 was downright atrocious), but they've somehow conditioned themselves into believing Sonic will never be anything other than a steaming pile of garbage for the rest of eternity and refuse to acknowledge anything even approaching quality made since Sonic & Knuckles. With self-loathing like that, who needs haters? Regardless of Sonic 4's final quality, SEGA have shown they are trying to listen to the demands of older fans and revisit the franchise's roots (2D gameplay, old-school visual style, returning badniks and bosses, special stages, fully playable Super Sonic etc) and what do these fans do? Throw it all back in their face and accuse SEGA of eeevil 'liars' because GREEN EYS AND 3D GRAFIKS =/= OLD SKEWL ENUFF! Poppycock. Sonic 4 is the first game in the franchise I've been excited about since the Rush series. I'm itching to get my hands on Episode 1 and sincerely hope it's as good as it looks.

It's such a shame these so-called fans are already threatening to boycott something they haven't even played yet. I think they need to play it when it comes out before they can judge on the overall quality of the game. I remember, when I was younger not looking forward to a videogame, but when I bought it, I ended up really enjoying it.

Totally agree with all three of you there. What has me excited about Sonic 4 is the look of the series - its evolution, not revolution, and by taking it back to its roots but firmly keeping the series in the 21st Century for looks, Sonic in a 2D game has never really looked better. When you realise Sonic the Hedgehog 1 (genesis) gets its 20th birthday in a few years time, that puts it all in perspective a bit. --- Here's something different - we all want a bit of previous games in the new episodic series. I've had a thought about the homing attack in this game - and had what I think could be a good idea. Bring back Sky Attack Zone from Sonic 2 - but make the player control the plane, to go up and down, rather than sonic. Now, make sonic the weapon for the jump button - curls into a ball, and does a homing attack into an enemy. Using the left and right buttons slows and speeds the plane up - if you go faster, the plane goes up and down using the up and down keys more slowly. This would reinvent the side on scrolling nature of Sky Attack Zone with a much better, more focused way of taking out Robotnik's badniks. Hell, something along these lines with Sonic would be awesome: Sol Feace VS an Enemy Star CruiserImagine Sonic taking on the Winged Fortress in this way...maybe not quite as hectic as Sol Feace, but the controls and enemies working in this way for a new Sky Attack Zone could work very well.

I got back into Sonic this past weekend. I have beaten Sonic 3 before, but Saturday I finished off I and II. They were awesome. I liked Sonic 2 the best. Btw Sonic fans... you can buy Sonic the Hedgehog for Ipod touch!

I have a question about Sonic Classics Collection. I heard that there's a few framerate/lag issues in some of the games, especially Sonic 2 if Tails is with you. Is this just the fandumb overexaggerating as usual, or does the lag or whatever actually affect the gameplay?

I have never had Sonic 2 lag when I played with Tales. I know in Sonic 1, it does when there happens to be enemies, coins and you jumping around.

I think what I'd do, honestly, is stop making the product line so freaking confused. After Sonic Heroes (one of the most lauded games in the franchise,) Sega started changing everything...and I mean everything. Each game was radically different from the next...it seemed like these storylines should have been for other characters, but Sonic got stuck in for the star power.
I'd take us back to SA2, a game which most everyone liked, and form my core 3D game lineup around that. I'd probably make the Chaos Emeralds optional again, though, so that you could still feel accomplished after the game ends...save for perhaps one single Super Sonic stage. Oh, right, once you have the CEs, I'd let you go Super whenever you wanted. So, basically, I'd take the Chaos Emerald mechanics from the Genesis games, and fix the minor camera, physics, and whatever else gripes, and make it just about Eggman hatching a harebrained plot again. Keep things nice and new and shiny with each game, and we'll probably be good. It won't please the S3&K-ers one bit, but I don't care...I'd have a little something for them, too.
For the traditionalists, Sonic 4 and the Rush series should do well. I think I'd release a few retro games like Sonic 4 every once in awhile, sort of like a stripped-down "track" model of a popular sports car, meant for the hardcore enthusiasts who won't accept anything less.
and, just personally, because I want to...there might be a DLC game based on SatAM, probably based on that 3D game engine, and probably each one being fairly short, released in episodic style, with a "season" of 5 games eventually available.
I liked "Riders," too, and Sonic's cameos in Nintendo games really aren't that bad to me. They'd probably stay the way they are, a little extra licensing cash never hurt.

I know some will disagree with me on this, but in my opinion, Shadow is a big problem with the franchise. Hear me out if you will.
Shadow first appeared in Sonic Adventure 2, which was a very good game with a plot that worked. Shadow was genuinely interesting, as he was a Sonic lookalike with a mysterious past. His past in learned throughout the game, and he sacrifices himself at the end of the game, effectively ending his story. He shows up again in Sonic Heroes, which is when the series began it's real decline in most people's eyes.
The problem with bringing him back is that his death meant nothing now. Remember E-102? He died at the end of his story, and never appeared in a mainstream Sonic game again. (I know about Battle & Shuffle, but those aren't really "Mainstream") The fact that Gamma stayed dead made his death much more poignant, and left a more lasting appeal. Heck, people still remember him, despite the fact that he and his goals were rather uninteresting.
In Shadow's case, he returned and found out everything about his past in his own game. So what's the point of him now? He's just sort of there, not really offering anything new, except his supposed "coolness" which brings me nicely to my next point.
Sonic was cool in the 90's but the definition of what's cool and what's not has changed. I think SEGA was well aware of that, and Shadow was made to embody what was cool in the early part of the decade. It worked, but once again, the definition of cool has changed again, leaving Shadow another character with an outdated feel about him. He's mainly in games because a younger generation believes that he is still cool despite the older audience knowing better.
Therefore, the older fans generally don't see the appeal to any new character, and SEGA keeps trying to bring in new ones with different traits, leading to the series being overcrowded.
How does this relate to Shadow you may ask? As said earlier, it's because he was brought in to appeal to the fanbase and has served his purpose, but is now around for no real reason now that his backstory is there.
I may be just waffling on here, but this is simply my opinion on things. I don't think Shadow ruined the franchise singlehandedly, but I think SEGA keeps trying to match the popularity he once had, despite the fact that it's not working.

Ah, that's a good point. Trying to please "the flavor of the month" has alienated the traditional fans. Kind of like that old saying, "Jack of all trades, master of none."
This is why the lineup needs to be streamlined a bit. Old characters will live on in fanfiction and the like. I don't think I'd pare the character lineup too much, but there needs to be a focus on giving these characters more life...the problem being we don't want to make the series entirely too serious, either. Archie Comics definitely fell to that sin, making their spinoff comics much more dramatic in the late '90s, early - mid '00s, even than the DiC-produced SatAM. Striking that balance is extremely difficult.
A lot of people say that they could do a better job...I might, but I'm not so sure I could do a worthy job.

Letting you guys know, they released Sonic the Hedgehog for Ipod Touch/Iphone/Ipad. Its a $6 app, but its worth it. I bought it and its an EXACT replica of the game. I also just found out they released Sonic 2 a few weeks ago. But I am broke so I'll have to wait

Well Sonic 4's "Big Reveal" was today: blogs.sega.com/usa/2010/05/20/the-big-sonic-4-news-is-finally-here/I couldn't care less about it being on the IPhone or whatever, but the release date has been pushed back because they took fan suggestions? That's very interesting, but let's hope they listened to the "Fandom" rather than the "Fandumb".

Pretty much the entire game has been leaked in video form after all, and what exactly are they going to fix that would push the release date so far back?

(Bluenose voice) Baton doun the hatches! Seriously, what on EARTH posessed SEGA to give this game such a stupid title? I mean, Sonic COLORS? Do they have any idea what the fandumb is going to do when they catch wind of this? I thought they were trying to appease them, and now this? Wow. Personally, I think this actually looks interesting, and will give it an unbiased try.

*sigh* SEGA, what are you doing? Is this just advertising a product in advance, 'cause I'd say it would be a HUGE mistake to devote major resources to a new title when you're still working on (and apparently overhauling) Sonic 4. I just hope those...things in the trailer are not playable characters. You've (maybe, hopefully) got a good thing going with Sonic 4; don't get greedy now! I've played Sonic games since Adventure 2 was released on the Gamecube in 2001. Having now played both the classic and current games, I would have to say that I love the fast paced action of the 2D sidescrollers, but I think the 3D platforming is more geared towards current standards. I think SEGA should partner with Nintendo in terms of what to do with Sonic. Let Sonic Team and Dimps make 2D sidescrollers for WiiWare and DS, and have Nintendo make the big 3D platforming games. That's just my wish though. It probably will never happen.

I honestly haven't played much of the games, but when I was younger I watched the cartoons all the time. In fact I just went on a nostalgia trip and watched a few episodes of SATAM. Didn't take long for me to buy the DVD!

Why is it, as a Sonic fan, I feel like the Nintendo fans keep chiding me for things other fans do?
