I'm thinking I'd do something simple. Think like the "Now Departing" range but without the interchangeable faces. OO scale sized-engines, with moderate use of stickers and 3-D faces. I think if ever there was a coupling system it'd be a plastic-interlocking system, loop-and-hook kind of thing. They would feature coupling rods, though more like the Bandai rods. Maybe for more complex engines they'd have their motion on in one big mold that clips under the body? Wheels would be plastic much like ERTL, Bandai, etc. Bodies might just be plastic or a hard resin but I'm not sure.
Engines would range around $7-9.50 US for smaller locos, and 12-15 for larger engines. Rolling stock like Troublesome Trucks would be around the 5-dollar mark, maybe two-packs for 8? Larger stock like Mail Coaches and Express Coaches would be closer to 13. The range would include engines currently seen in the show. Thomas, James, Percy, Stanley, Rosie, Gordon, etc. Engines 1-8 plus Diesel, Mavis, Spencer, Whiff and others. Tender engines would have tenders separate from their bodies. Lightweight and durable, and loads of fun with a simple track system. Or, one could easily use OO track instead. Characters like Bertie, Harold would have opening doors and such. Characters like Rocky might not make the cut, but it is fun to think about.
It's either that, or I go another way and just do a bunch of bed sheet/pillow sets. Thomas, James, and Percy themed sets, Rosie and Emily as well. Perhaps Diesel as a bedspread too? Keep the sizes between Twin-size beds for kids and a special range of adult-Thomas sets for queen beds, for those interested. It is still merch right?

Since Mattel owns HIT entertainment, I figure I'd put in a die-cast range by Mattel which is the same way Mattel did with their Cars die-cast range, But it's accurate to the TV series models. The engines with tenders shall not be welded to their cabs in order for them to go around many curves.
Introduced in Series .1: Hillside Packaging
Locomotives Thomas Edward Henry Gordon James Percy Toby Emily
Rolling Stock Annie & Clarabel(2-Pack) 4-Wheeled CCT Van CCT Van with Bogie wheels 6-ton M Wagon Conflat Henrietta Troublesome Trucks(2-Pack & they come in various faces) Breakdown Train Sodor works unit coach Old Coaches(2-Pack) Tan Branchline Coaches(2-Pack)
Off-Rail Bertie Terence Trevor Harold Fat Controller's Car The Fat Controller Lady Hatt Station Master Mrs. Kindly

Series .2: Knapford Packaging Introductions to be planned...I could do a mattel TUGS line if you'd like.

I thought I might as well bring back this thread to expand on the ideas that I've tossed around on other threads. The range would be a diecast line that would be around the size of the Ertl or Take n Play ranges; certainly no bigger than the Wooden range. The models would be accurate to the TV series and fairly well detailed for their size, but not detailed enough to blow the price out of proportion and lessen the durability of the toys. The majority of details would be part of the body mould, rather than applied separately. Side rods would remain static. Whilst the ERTL range modelled siderods in a grid-type formation with gaps for the wheels, my idea would be something more like the Tomica diecast range, where the side rods would be part of the main body mould: personally I feel that this would give the models a more detailed look without making them easy to break. The couplings could go one of two ways. Either the range could utilise the "smart magnets" from the pre-2014 Take-N-Play line, or it could go with something closer to Collectible Railway; plastic couplings that rotate, allowing for couplings to connect either way whilst keeping the costs down. Ideally, the scale of this range should be quite consistent, though issues with scaling might be unavoidable. The smaller engines need to be big enough to be suited to young children whereas the larger engines need to be small enough that the costs- and therefore prices- aren't overly high. Ertl got round the issue by making the larger engines in a smaller scale, whereas Tomica squashed the bigger engines lengthways. It would be nice to see a range that doesn't make the larger engines squashed and distorted so if I had to choose, making the larger engines in a similar but smaller scale to the shorter engines would be my answer. I'd have it so that the tender engines weren't made from a single mould that accommodates the loco and tender. This was perhaps one of ERTL's main drawbacks. Either the tender should be detachable or articulated whilst permanently attached to the engine. If it's the former, it may be a good idea for the coupling between engine and tender to differ from the standard couplings; perhaps a one-way hook-and-loop coupling to make it clear what way round the tenders go? Mind you, this would probably only be beneficial if the standard couplings were magnetic- if they were plastic hooks then it would probably just mean more hassle for the manufacturers. I'm not going to give a long list of what characters I'd put in the range- where's the fun and insight in that? I will say, however, that I'd give priority to characters which currently appear in the show over retired characters, especially if they haven't appeared in the CGI series. This would be a benefit to the notion of returnees- this range can treat such characters as new. The track would probably be something along the lines of the later Take Along and Take-n-Play track; more "track-like" than the ERTL style of track, but at the same time lenient in terms of gauges it can accommodate, allowing for basic cross-compatibility between other ranges. For example, the later Take Along track can also be used with Wooden and some ERTL engines. The track connectors could be something like the early take-along track, with both a male and female connector at each end allowing for the track to be connected either way. Playsets would be based on locations from the TV series, but with a bit of artistic license if it will up the play value. You could have a Brendam Docks playset with cranes and shutters that could be operated by hand, and all elements of the playset should flow and integrate together. The high-speed action present in the Trackmaster range, whilst downplayed, should not be completely forgotten about. An equivalent of the Trackmaster "Gordon's Hill" set should be even more fun if the engines can free-wheel! Tying it in with a location from the TV series helps as well. Track and accessory packs should exist too. This would be a good means of introducing stations. Taking a leaf from ERTL's books, you could release a station accessory pack including a station building, a platform or two, some signals and maybe even a signal box! The station and platform would be its own entity so that it can still be used if a customer doesn't intend on owning any track. Depending on the shape of the station, it could be removed from its platform and serve as a house or mill. The track packs would be good places to stock up on points and straight track pieces, whereas the accessory packs could consist of engine sheds, level crossings, turntables, bridges, tunnels and so on. Whilst I don't see such a range being introduced any time soon, even if I have tried to be realistic about it, it's nice to think about what could be.

After chatting with Skarlouie not long ago, we both had an idea that might be worthwhile for Mattel to consider; Anyone remember when Ertl made the Fat Controller / Porter and Mrs Kyndley / Dowager Hatt figurines? We thought it'd be nice if the human characters could be merchandised in their own collectable range, considering how many have been prominently featured in episodes of late - Sir Robert Norramby, Farmer McColl, Lady Hatt, even Sailor John's debut in the recent feature-length special. The same could be done for miscellaneous characters like the Grumpy Passenger, the Bird Watcher, the Photographer, Dusty Dave the miller and so on. If not their own range, then perhaps they could be made alongside the Take-n-Play or Wooden Railway ranges - over-scaled perhaps, but it would be neat to see another area of Thomas merch explored than just the vehicle ranges

I think Sailor John is getting a wooden figure. Passengers is a good idea. Maybe have a bigger scale of engines and coaches so you can put them inside the coach. Guards and Breakvans will also be a good option as well.

So my idea for merch is something I've been looking for but have not found, as I suppose they're to adult for kids in the targeted age group. But I would create Keychains, School Folders, Binders and other school like supplies. with Thomas and his friends depicted on it. As an adult I would love to show my love for Thomas with little items such as these but have had no luck finding such things. I would also like to make adult sized clothing. And would love to see off movie and tv series soundtracks released. I would die if they released the soundtrack to The Adventure Begins movie. The music was to die for. <3

I would redo the Lionel range because Lionel barely releases new Thomas engines anymore.
Sets:
Thomas's Branch Line Set -Thomas -Annie and Clarabel -Ffarquhar Station -Windmill Diorama -Track
The Little Western Set -Duck -Alice, Dulcie and Mirabel -Bluff's Cove Station -Seaside Diorama -Track
Also, if you guys remember back when the Nintendo Game Boy Advance had Game Boy Advance Video, I created a lineup of Thomas cartridges for that:
Thomas and Friends Volume 1: May 2004
Gordon and Spencer The Spotless Record
Thomas and Friends Volume 2: June 2004
Jack Jumps In A Friend In Need

I wouldn't create a new line so much as go back in time and fix the releases of each year of one line so that they all make sense. I'll go with the first Wooden Railway line for example:
1992/93 (all Season 1 characters)
Engines: Thomas, Edward, Henry, Gordon, James, Percy, Toby Off-Rail: Terence, Bertie, Figure Set (Sir Topham and family, Porter/Guard) Rolling Stock: Annie, Clarabel, Henrietta, Green/cream Express Coaches, Troublesome Truck, Troublesome Van (the T. Brakevan without the "brake" in is name), a plain brake van, Tar Wagon Accessories: Henry's Tunnel, Suddery w/ crossing and dirt "bunker" siding, Knapford, Elsbridge with an attached track on each side, Single Shed, Roundhouse, Turntable, Thomas & Gordon Set, Come Out Henry Set (I'd also have the crossing tracks on top of Henry's Tunnel removed just from the HTs that come with this set.)

An idea I recently had was "What if Matchbox produced Thomas toys?", which led me to create these models: I made these with the intention of making them look like how Matchbox may have made a diecast Thomas range during the mid 1980s, hence the sticker faces. Many of the parts are the same as or similar to the existing trains that Matchbox produced, such as the wheels, buffers, couplings, footsteps and (in Percy's case) the running board. I wanted them to look in line with the pre-existing Matchbox trains whilst still looking like themselves. Part of me wants to make more of these, as well as sets and packaging. This kind of alternate universe idea is an interesting one to contemplate and leads you speculating how it would have affected the brand differently. Notably, Mattel would have had involvement with the Thomas franchise as early as 1997 (when they bought out Matchbox), assuming the range would have even lasted long enough.

Taking the dust off once more, I'd do something like the existing Bachmann line, as well as the now-extinct Hornby line, sort of mashing up the TVS models with the real basis of most of the engines, as well as a little RWS inspiration:
Engines: Edward Gordon Henry Thomas James Percy Toby Duck Patriot City of Truro Diesel Donald Douglas Daisy Stepney Class 40 Bill Ben BoCo RWS Flying Scotsman Spamcan Bear Oliver Mavis Derek Harvey Emily Fergus Arthur Spencer Murdoch Neville Molly Hiro Den Dart 'Arry Bert Salty Paxton Sidney
Rolling Stock: Annie and Clarabel Henrietta The Express Coaches Red Coaches Emily's Coaches LNER 12-ton vans Mail vans Ballast Wagons Stone Trucks Fuel tankers Tar Tankers Milk Tankers Mine Trolleys S.C. Ruffey Fred Pelhay Rickety Hector Rocky Judy and Jerome
Modular Locations:
Knapford Station Tidmouth Sheds Dockside pier Station of unknown origin Goods sheds Sodor Suspension Bridge Coal tipper Post office Steamworks Dieselworks Search & Rescue Center
Motorized other vehicles:
Cranky Bertie Terrence Carly Big Mickey Trevor George Bulgy Jack Alfie Oliver Isobella Kelly Ned Max Monty

I would bring back Plarail's 2003 to 2013 range but this time worldwide. All characters released in TrackMaster & Plarail between 2007 to 2018 would be present. As well as Daisy, Derek & Fergus. The engines around the time would be based on their counterparts from the first four seasons. Like Skarloey would have scarlet paint and Rusty would have a smaller face. Engines NWR No. 2 to 5 would have a choice between original and resigned. Also, Oliver would run on a Thomas type driver and redesigned Edward and James would be tender driven like Emily, Murdoch or Molly.

This is an idea that's been swimming around my head for a few years now.
Firstly, the current ranges, with the exception of the Bachmann models, are all scaled down, shortened and squashed versions of what you see on screen. As I think most of us would agree, the classic ERTL range of Thomas toys was far better at representing the characters and the range was far wider than what is on offer today.
Second, the focus of playsets always seem to be action or gimmick orientated. Whether it be the Cave Collapse playset, the Glowing Mine playset, the Monkey Palace playset, etc. When I was a child and I used to play with my ERTL die-cast models, I wasn't sending Thomas to the Moon or jumping over raised bridges or sending him barreling over a shipwreck.
I was setting up shunting yards, using cassette tape cases as a six-platform station, I was hooking James up to six or more coaches and sending him to London (the kitchen as it was known in my house). I was playing with trains like they were trains. Like I was running an actual railway. Not like I was trying to envision the next Michael Bay film.
And third, something Mattel hasn't taken advantage of in their years of brand ownership is their ability to produce beautifully detailed die-cast models. They can produce properly scaled die-cast reproductions of famous film, TV and video game vehicles, so why not use that as an advantage and do the same for Thomas toys?
My line of Thomas merchandise would be very similar to ERTL's, with a few differences.
Every engine would be die-cast metal. The proportions of the locomotives would be as close to scale as possible, giving good representation of the on-screen characters, so no squashed cabs, funnels or boilers. Plastic wheel sets on the engines would be accurate, no two-wheeled tenders on the big engines. For tender engines, the coal tender would be a separate piece. The couplings would be made of a strong plastic or resin and would take the form of either the loop-and-hole mechanism from the later ERTL years or a plastic buckeye-styled coupling. All of the couplings would be the same size across the range, allowing for easy interchange between tenders and rolling stock.
There would be a notable size difference between engines of different gauges. The big railway engines would be upscaled slightly from their ERTL counterparts, where as the Skarloey and Arlesdale railways engines would either stay the same sort of size or be slightly scaled down from their ERTL versions.
Road/air/sea vehicles would be either metal or plastic where applicable, e.g. Bulstrode being plastic so as to float on water if you wanted him to. Rolling stock would be plastic with a metal base, perhaps full metal for certain characters such as Toad or the Spiteful Brakevan. The rolling stock would be to scale with the appropriate characters they would be used with, though they would be able to be used with smaller/bigger engines with the universal coupling.
A decent selection of characters and rolling stock would be available from launch, with a wave of new models being released either every six months or once per year. It would include well known and loved characters from the TV series as well as select characters from the Railway Series books.
Prices for engines and rolling stock would depend on the size of the engine or quantity of models sold. For example, perhaps £9.99-£11.00 for Gordon or Henry, $5.99-£6.99 for smaller engines like Thomas or Percy, £4.99-£5.99 for the Skarloey and Arlesdale engines. Non-character rolling stock would come in packs of two or three, pricing at around £5.99-£8.99 depending on the number of items in a pack.
A range of playsets including locations from the TV series, as well as other various railway infrastructure such as turntables, sheds, signals, water towers, coal hoppers, etc. Perhaps tracks would come later.
Above all else, my line of merchandise would focus on the railway. No silly gimmicks or action-movie styled playsets, just a good line of toy trains for children of all ages.

Oof, this is a fun one, alright so, the brand i would like to distribute would be very similar to Adventures.
Basically, i'd bring back a lot of elements from the original TNP's, like the detail that was put into them, i would still keep the adaptors, so it could be compatible with Ertl's.
Some of the engines i would release would actually be heavily based off of old Take Along models, Billy for example. I Would release most of the engines seen in TVS series, with a few RWS character, like the old Take N Play. They would of course be Die-Cast. As for price, some of the smaller engines like Skarloey, would be about 4.00$, while some of the bigger engines like Gordon would be 8.00$ or over which is about 6.00 Pounds.
Sets and Destinations would be made for the range of course, locations like Knapford Station, Brendam Docks and the Sodor Suspension Bridge. Most of the engines would probably have CGI styled faces. They would of course be compatible with Ertl and Trackmaster thanks to their adaptors.
Anyways, that's how i would handle my own merchandise.

I was looking back at this thread and looked at my line for the GameBoy Advance video cartridge ideas. Now I’m gonna do it again but more accurate.
Thomas and Friends Volume 1: Thomas To The Rescue Percy’s New Whistle Thomas and The Tuba Squeak, Rattle and Roll
Thomas and Friends Volume 2: You Can Do It Toby! Edward the Great Henry and The Wishing Tree Thomas and The Fireworks Display
These would technically be released in 2004.
And, if the GameBoy Advance video line was successful, we could have got a Calling All Engines! GBA Video cartridge in 2005 or 2006 ish.

I LOVE this idea, my favorite would be the Green Express Coaches (WHY didn't they make these??) and the removed top tracks on Henry's tunnel, those are so inconvenient with layout building, maybe you could continue it like this, 1994 is Season 2 characters, 1995 is Season 3 characters, 1996 is Season 4 characters, 1997 they maybe make some RWS characters or new destinations & sets, 1998 is Season 5 characters and so on?

Might as well list some Wooden Railway what-ifs I had on my mind...
Engines, vehicles, and rolling stock that could've been made (under Learning Curve's watch, that is) - City of Truro - Rex - Bert (was eventually released in 2015-2016) - Bear (maybe put him in his green livery to further differentiate him from D199?) - Pip and Emma - Jock - Green Arrow - Sixteen (considering the likes of Wilbert, Frank, and Ivo Hugh were released in the range while most of Christopher Awdry's books were never published in the States like his father's were, I can't see how the four/five characters listed above couldn't have made the cut, either) - Ned - Oliver (the Excavator; was eventually released in a two-pack with Oliver the engine in 2015) - Buster - Horrid Lorries 3-pack - Green Express Coaches (maybe call them "Gordon's Express Coaches" and the red ones the "Sodor (or Main Line) Express Coaches"?) - Updated versions of (at least) Duck, Donald, Douglas, Mavis, BoCo (most likely could've been redesigned as a limited edition reintroduction), the Troublesome Truck, and the Troublesome (Brake)van (the latter two could've been a two-pack available after the Rickety Troublesome Truck was retired and before the Giggling Troublesome Trucks were introduced)
Items that could've been introduced sooner - Derek - could've been introduced in 1999 or 2000 - Iron 'Arry and Iron Bert - could've been introduced in 2000, 2001, or 2002 - Arthur - could've been introduced in 2004 alongside Emily, Spencer, Murdoch, Jack, and Alfie to tie in with New Friends for Thomas - (Redesigned) Diesel - could've also been released in 2004 to tie in with Steamies vs. Diesels - Kelly, Isobella, and Nelson - could've been introduced in 2007 alongside Byron and Max and Monty

That's something that's always puzzled me too, why were there never Wooden Railway green express coaches?? It's weird because I'm sure I remember seeing them in toy shops or in catalogues as a child, but maybe that was a normal Brio or some other brand's product. I'd argue the green ones would've been a better choice than the red ones, but oh well.

I'd argue the green ones would've been a better choice than the red ones, but oh well. Definitly, the Green are used more often, I always like to think the Green ones are used for the Express and any trains Gordon pulls, and then the Red are for other engines.
