For the Jury’s consideration (as some of these may well be among a Whovian’s least favourite stories), I shall add notes for my reasons regarding these stories being on this list:
1. The Tenth Planet (first regeneration story AND first appearance of the Cybermen)
2. Inferno (introduces the concept of a parallel world and discusses the negative impact of pollution, all while introducing audiences to the concept that the Doctor cannot always save the Earth).
3. The Edge of Destruction (a VERY welcome break from the constant planet-hopping or time-travelling in other stories, while also firmly establishing the TARDIS as a key element of the show).
4. Ghost Light (the scene where Ace realises the Doctor has tricked her plus the haunted house feel of the piece demonstrate the clear edge the crew was trying to go for in future stories).
5. The War Games (introduces the Time Lords, bids farewell to the companions in a manner that is rather bittersweet in hindsight, kick-starts the Third Doctor’s tenure by forcing the Second Doctor to regenerate and live on Earth in exile, and tackles the concept of war with astounding maturity while retaining all elements of a good DW story)!
Next up: Top 5 TUGS characters (and no, you don’t have to state reasons - this is just a one-off thing).

1. The WHOLE episode of Escape (I mean, that's kinda obvious right?) 2. Making the Skarloey Railway engines different colours (still like them as red though, but it made sense to have them different) 3. The sense of danger in runaways like Percy's Predicament 4. The sense of business and atmosphere at the Docks (particularly at night, beautiful whichever way you look at it) 5. This is a bit harsh on the RWS to be honest but Wilbert trying to write the Scottish accents for Donald and Douglas was pretty hard to read for me, the TVS made the Scottish accents a bit less pronounced but still noticeable - if they'd been written, it would have been easier to read. Michael Angelis was GOLD with all the voices and the Scottish Twins stand out for me!
OK, I'm going to be lazy - top 5 things the Railway Series did better than the TV Series!

EDIT: Ok, here I'm going to have to disagree with some of the above.
1. Being generally more minimalist and focused on plot elements that actually work in the narrative (For example, 'Escape' in the TVS is good, but the scenes with Edward, much as I love him, and the brief scene from 'Little Western' just feel shoehorned in and kinda feel more like plot filler to me).
2. Using plot elements that make more sense (for example, as all the Skarloey engines in the RWS are red, it makes more sense for the trucks to confuse Peter Sam with Sir Handel in 'Trucks'.
3. Leaving the accents open to interpretation, and making meanings clear. For example, just by confirming that Skarloey and Rheneas were built in Wales, the series lets the reader decide how their accents should sound, whether they be British or Welsh. In contrast, despite the thick accents Donald and Douglas had, I could generally make out what they meant when I read what they said along with the rest of the text.
4. The sheer geography and world-building of Sodor. I know the TV series has done a fair bit of this, but most of their stories are set on the North Western Railway - and mainly either the mainline or Ffarquhar branch line, at that - while the Skarloey Railway only ever got a couple of episodes per season at best, and the Arlesdale Miniature Railway only ever got three episodes about it in the whole show. In the Railway series, we get to spend more time exploring lesser known locations such as the Little Western, the Wellsworth Branch, and the Culdee Fell Mountain Railway! Heck, even the Peel Godred Branch gets an acknowledgement in one story! Having references to all these different railways and locations, and spending a bit of time with them just makes the whole world of the Island of Sodor feel so much bigger to me.
5. The sheer time and effort Wilbert Awdry put into making the franchise. The TV series crew in the beginning worked so hard on the show to make it a success, and by thunder did it pay off! But I feel that the Reverend deserves this spot, because he put so much detail into the stories. Every single one was based on a real life event or procedure with real railway explanations, which I cannot think how much research he would have had to do on a VERY regular basis. Not only that, but he also started the series in wartime, when even paper was rationed, just to entertain his own son when Christopher was ill in bed. He put a lot of love into the stories, and when I read them I feel the love that that man had not just for railways but also for his own children (and that in my mind singles out to me the good children's stories from the bad ones - the good ones are written with the writers' own hearts at the very core of it all!).
Now for something that should hopefully be shorter, and because it is Halloween soon...: Top 5 scary episodes from the TV series.

Hmmm, I'm going to bend this one a little. Given each episode has three segments, I'll choose my Top 5 segments rather than comparing episodes as a whole. Because we all know it'd be the earlier ones anyway!
1. Nightmare on Evergreen Terrace (Willie terrorises their dreams...the only one that truly scared me as a kid) 2. The Shinning (where No TV and No Beer make Homer something something) 3. The Devil and Homer Simpson (where Flanders is the Devil) 4. Homer^3 (the early 3D one) 5. Time and Punishment (the time-travelling toaster one)

Have to say I was more a casual fan of FRIENDS back in the day. By the time I started watching in Season 8, there were a good 150 episodes already and I hadn't the interest to try and catch up on them all, I just watched from Season 8 to the end. And that's a good 20 years ago, not watched much of it since. So basically, I haven't a Top 5 for this, and given it's been a month I don't know if anyone else does either. Sad news about Perry's passing though.
Well, we're nearly at that point of the year again, so let's break out the Christmas lists - Top 5 Christmas movies
